Steve Allen, - one of the brightest stars to ever light-up the tube ! ... GREAT interview, btw. covers so much of his life & his thoughts. thanks for sharing this.
this fellow had had written over 4,000 tunes, played benny goddman in the movie, his improvisational man in the street comments were priceless, sharp and funny--he wrote about 10 books, and was truly a renaissance man
It's funny Steve mentioned that education is wasted on the youth. I started college right out of high school and just wast not into and was doing terribly and ended up taking a long break. Now I'm 26 and working on an Associates degree at a community college(should be done by Spring '12), and then transferring and going for Bachelors after that. I took (too) many years off in between, but am back now that that fire got lit under me!
a truly unique one-of-a-kind multi-talented individual---a brilliant mind, great comedic instincts, composer, actor, just such a sharp wit who hipped me to what a spoonerism is---a blushing crow or a crushing blow---your spirit soars and lives forever---thanks steve
THANK YOU FOR THIS! So much I never knew about him. Never knew he had asthma--how fascinating. A real Renaissance man! God, how he is missed. A great teacher in everything he did--a natural Rabi of sorts! What a voice--what a brain! Enviable & diverse talents!
While growing up watching his "Tonight Show", it was a really great experience meeting this wonderful actor/musician and his wife when I was working in Las Vegas. These folks were the best. Saw him again in Seattle at a concert. He loved performing music in his jazz band. I will truly miss this very talented gentleman.
I read his autobiography when I was a kid, and must have been just a middle age man. He was so talented and funny. One of the great talents. If you can read his works, do !
A brilliant and brilliantly funny man. He was utterly right. Americans are indeed getting demonstrably dumber and it's only gotten worse since this was taped in 2000.
I was privileged to attend a taping of one of his shows on Vine St. studio in Hollywood in the 60's. He was so down to earth and kind even when the cameras were not on. He treated the audience like guests in his home. A dear and lovable genius.
i've seen a lot of early tape of this fella. comes off as a big prick to his guests. oh well, thats show business.... apparently he's a righteous dude.
This man was a genius. About the only one who followed him on The Tonight Show that approached his talent was Johnny Carson. Jack Paar was good, Leno's ok, but Conan's nowhere near Allen or the others.
He was an all time great. Loved his TV show and all the silliness. Classy and funny guy.

And of course, Marshall McLuhan uses the words "cool" and "hot" in even more unfamiliar ways... and almost no one knows what he's talking about!

I used to sneak to watch Steve Allen on TV. As a child I recognized his intelligence mixed with humor. His show was stimulating to a developing mind.

A supremely talented man - but a very gentle man and a humble one as well. I was very lucky to have seen him in action on TV in the 60s and beyond.

I love Steve Allen. His show Meeting of Minds was so informative and entertaining. His book Dumbeth could be a testament to where we are today.
Steve Allen- one of a kind.... and still missed.
