@Tockwork Unfortunately the time still runs unless somebody called a time out until about 1991 when the NCAA changed the rule. Houston didn't have any time outs left.
FUNERAL FOR LORENZO CHARLES: His "Celebration of Life" Service is slated for Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Wake Chapel Church located at at 3805 Tarheel Club Road, Raleigh, NC. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. and the service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Pastor J. Jasper Wilkins, Jr., Sr. Pastor, Wake Chapel Church will conduct the Homegoing Celebration.
I'm from NC, and the 82' and 83' tile games made me a huge Basketball fan. I watched this game live, and I'll always remember the dunk. R.i.p. Lorenzo, we never forgot.
It was true justice in the sport of basketball. The Phi Slamma Jamma handed out so many defeats it was time they got beat in a big one. Seems the greatest moments in basketball are made by these unsung heros like charles who may die but will never fade in the spirit and memory of the game.
I played against this brother in high school. A real Cool dude. He went to Brooklyn Tech i was at Lafayette. I remember watching this live and i was screaming my head off!!! what a finish! Damn I can't believe it. My prayers to his family. RIP Lorenzo.....................
I watched every minute of that game...a bunch of underdogs against Phi Slamma Jamma and their two Hall of famers. They hung in there to the end,and won it fair and square. What a contest, what a memory!!
Lorenzo Charles was also the charter bus driver for the UNC field hockey team. Alongside many other games, he drove us to our NCAA final in '09 where we ended winning the national championship.
We'll miss you big guy. And though you'll always be a Wolfpack at heart, you'll also always be apart of the Carolina family.
Lorenzo Charles became the charter bus driver for the Duke lacrosse team and for the UNC-Chapel Hill baseball team. He was a great guy and will always remain a legend to the Wolfpack Nation.
@sirplus1999 Jerry West is still with us and a driving force with the Laker's administration....but the others you mention were all wonderful players who left us with lasting memories-----none more imbedded in my mind than the Charles' shot that won it all for NC St.
@mwright11231992 Didn't know he'd left the Lakers after being there for 50 years-----wow, being with the Warriors IS kind of like being dead, huh? Thanks for the info.....
The most exciting finals I ever watched! The "Cardiac Kids" were my pick to win the whole thing that year, but they pulled almost every game in the playoffs out by 1 or 2 pts. R.I.P. Lorenzo Charles and thanks for this memory!
I saw that game....awesome! Cant believe Zo is gone...super duper nice guy. Bet he's reliving that awesome stuff with Jimmy V in sweet, sweet heaven...RIP Zo you deserve heaven...
My misfortune to announce that on yesterday, June 27, Lorenzo Charles, the hero at the end of this historic game, died in a traffic accident. God speed.
Yes, my husband and boys were coming through on I-40 East and the traffic was backed up for miles on I-40 West and backed up on East as well, although mostly from gawkers...
RIP Lorenzo Charles. You will forever be a part of Wolfpack Nation, and always be loved by us. This is such a sad day for the Wolfpack fans. Thanks, Lorenzo.
@wilmingtonteri There was a 3 pt shot that year but not used in the tournament. Derrick had 27 points (9 3 pointers) in the first half of the Virginia game he got hurt in by landing on Othello Wilson's foot. At one time we were 9-7, we finished 26-10. Tell me who has EVER finished a season like that. When Lorenzo dunked the ball there were 2 seconds left and they went fast. I can't stand people who come on sites like this and comment on another team. The Lakers, really? Asshole.

I loved the part when the Houston players couldnt believe it that the layed out on the court slapping the court with their hands.... THEY WERE SHOCKED! haha! :
It was a great final, as in, good ending. I mean, the 1st 5 minutes is some of the worst basketball play for such great players. All they did was force up shots and no one showed any court vision. 3-13 after going up 6-0? I'm not an expert in bball history but I've seen much better game play from older games. I guess it was just what was at stake in this game that made it great. Certainly wasn't the best basketball game. When was shot clock brought in? Seems like they wasted half the game
@deafguyclass07 the clock didnt stop at 6 or so for Syracuse either when Kieth Smart hit the jumper for Indiana back in 87 ? I always questioned that to??
I didn't think college basketball put the 3 point shot into effect until 1986, but I see a 3 point line on a court where a college basketball team plays in. (The University of New Mexico)
@sportsnut6078 If I remember right, the ACC was using the 3 point line that year, even in the ACC Tournament. The NCAA was not that year, and you are probably right in that it was 86 before the NCAA made it official.
to this day i get nervous when I see the Cozzell's pass at the end of the game to Derek, I thought Anders was going to get a hand on it, and I don't think I could have taken 5 more minutes...
#VIDEOPOSTERID# nice vid, reminds me of me in college - lol. I'm five'seven and I can 180 dunk. I used the famous training program that real nba players use. If you want more info about the program, check out - (50 inch vertical [dot] com)
ncaaondemand, I play basketball every week. I am only 5'8 and I can dunk! I simply took this training plan at 50inch vertical[dot]com - anyone can do it
I remember sitting in my living room as a freshman in high school in complete shock. I grew up in a small down 50 miles SW of Houston. My stomach was churning sick after Charles slam. The only other time that has happened in my life was when Texas fumbled a punt with 1 minute left leading 9-3 in the in the 2004 Cotton Bowl against Georgia. Georgia recovered, scored, beat Texas 10-9 and cost Texas the National Champtionship for 1983. Now, that made me sick!
I still remember rolling on the floor after that dunk. The euphoria was better than any drug could possibly be. Most people don't realize they had to win the ACC Tournament just to get invited to the dance. Every game was a nail biter.
I'm a UNC fan, but I miss the days when state was like this. It was more fun if you live in NC. I enjoy it more than the duke rivalry. Jimmy V is inspirational no matter who you pull for.
we lost to V tech by 20 points today. I miss NC state basketball back in the days :( Im a junior at NC state and it sucks that i probably will never see a day like this come again as a undergrad student....i want to cry . :(
I'm a BC fan but I will say this..ACC Basketball and College Basketball needs NC State back on the map. College Basketball LIVES in the state of North Carolina and having Carolina, Duke, State and heck even Wake nationally relevant can only do good for the sport
Btw, I grew up in the state of North Carolina and there's only a few things in life I love more than ACC Basketball..
I graduated from NCSU that year, so needless to say it was a magical time. And here's what Jimmy V had that team believing: Stay within 10 pts with 5 minutes left to play, and I'll get you the rest of the way. They believed him, they did, and he delivered, time after time after time.
R.I.P Jimmy V....and Lorenzo Charles

I still remember rolling on the floor after that dunk. The euphoria was better than any drug could possibly be. Most people don't realize they had to win the ACC Tournament just to get invited to the dance. Every game was a nail biter.
Truly a team of destiny if ever there was one.

I'm a UNC fan, but I miss the days when state was like this. It was more fun if you live in NC. I enjoy it more than the duke rivalry. Jimmy V is inspirational no matter who you pull for.

NC State just upset Duke. Could this be another Cinderella year for NC State?
