  • Yeah, it was great to see ZZ Top on the BBC show 'Later with Jools Holland.' James Harman is a top quality blues man. He played in a great band with Hollywood Fats - check-out Hollywood Fats.

  • First Class

  • Frank Beard is a fucking god

  • that guitar tone is soo soo motherf*cking cool! love to get it...but it is the feel, it's in the fingers and in his soul....

  • zz top rules, kicks ass.. they don´t eat honey, the chew the bees, hehe

  • I think Billy Gibbons was drunk but they still rock

  • 1:17 That solo is SO Badass

  • James Harman on harp. Thank you, baby.

  • Anyone that dont think this is cool has a problem!!

  • Just call him Reverend Willie. . . .

    Oh yeah. . .

  • This is a classic!!!

  • What the hell was that at 1:00 ? lol

  • @BigNeonGlitterGirl He got his lyrics wrong-haha-oops........

  • If you like this check out ZZ Top "Rythmeen" and tracks from that album. Awsome, the guys are back to this kind of sound on Rythmeen.

  • Is Billy playing "Pearly Gate"?, or is it just another gold-top from his collection?

  • @BCRSIX He used in this video a Tokai Love Rock Les paul.

  • @zzfanhun Cool! Thanks

  • LYRICS : To see if you were at home. Your shade was down, there wasn't even a sound But something told me you weren't alone. What in the world can a nasty dog do But try to get next to you? Don't laugh 'cause it ain't funny. Look how it happened to me. It could happen to you, you could be a fool too And it'd leave you in misery. I guess there's nothin' more funky king can do But to try to get next to you.
  • sound qualitys rough but this is a great jam.

  • One of my all time favs, thanks for sharing.

  • I'm a huge fan, and I think it's kick ass for The Rev. Willie G. to improvise on the lyrics. Probably a combination of not caring/forgetting. The music was badass, so who really gives a damn. Thanks for posting!

  • Yeah-yeah, a Tokai Les Paul.

  • What is that guitar the Rev Billy G is playing? It looks like a single (P-90) pick-up Les Paul goldtop. No pick-up selector switch (obviously), no scratchplate & a single volume and tone control. A very unusual guitar. I wasn't aware that Gibson made single pick-up Les Pauls. However, that doesn't look like a Gibson logo on the headstock. The body looks pretty battered but the tone is pure Gibbons. Can anyone shed any light?

  • Looks like a Gibson logo on the headstock to me, look at 1:10-1:12. I'll bet it's a custom job they did for him, he's got tons of custom fiddles. This performance is a bit shaky in places but the tone is always happnin' . Dig Dusty's dirty bass sound...

  • Yes, King, you're correct, it is a Gibson, despite the fact that the logo looks a bit strange around 1:21-1:26. It's apparent on the other two performances from Later: 'Stop Breaking Down Blues' & 'What's Up with That'. If the LP is a custom job, it's a very old one judging from the distressed nature of the top. Could it be a prototype of a model that never went into production? Gibbons gets an amazing tone from the single-coil bridge pick-up. Maybe I can get Gibson to make me a copy.

  • @dmhughdie As far as I know it is a prototype, I believe I read it somewhere that Billy has a much sought after Les Paul prototype fitting this description. He was playing some Tokai Les Paul style guitars at this time, but I think they were all twin humbucker guitars with Tune-o-matic bridges. Either way, its a beauty, and Billy always has killer tone!

  • No, we're both wrong. It's not a Gibson. Check out 'Stop Breaking Down Blues' at around 3:08. Looks like it says 'Tokai' on the headstock. A Japanese replica, I believe. No Tune-o-matic bridge either, just a wraparound tailpiece. Looks great, though.

  • Good eye DM, Tokai made some excellent guitars. The Strat SRV has on the cover of Texas Flood (I think) is a Tokai strat copy. I'm sure the "relic" job is form the factory. It's got one helluva tone. Have Mercy Miss Percy!

  • Jeez, this is confusing! Looks like the 'Tokai' logo is printed on a piece of gaffer tape. Who knows what this is?!

  • tone is pure gibbons coz it comes from his fingers...he sounds the same on most guitars..... guess he is born with it ...you cant buy that dude..!!!

  • @pmay222 That and he pinches those harmonics with a Mexican Peso coin, so it is told

  • @cemott3rd I think he uses a Peso only for studio work...in live shows he never had it...

  • @lollo1991 Were you looking with binoculars? Maybe it was a quarter! ;-)>

  • @cemott3rd Go and Google "Ken Rodenas". You can see all the BFG's picks.

He used both: a quarter and a peso for a pick. BTW I'm gonna see ZZTop the 14th of July here in Italy! I'm so stoked! Cheers man!

  • @pmay222 that's right man!

  • my god, this powertrio begilded my, ond probably many others, boring swedish youthhood with LP:s like tres hombres, tejas & many moore, i also had the luck to speak to mr Gibbons on their visit in Sthlm -85, he is a gentleman without mannerism, they are so damned cool and asskicking!

  • God Bless USA..

If you can do better, show me your 30yr

    tour schedule...they fkilll..ss

  • nope, it ain't pearly gates.

  • Eel jeffe holler mucho mas

  • Er.....come to think of it, he's actually been singing this song nearly 40 years. Looks like Mr. Gibbons isn't the only one who had a senior moment there. I'm now off to stand in the corner wearing a big pointy hat with a "D" on it!

  • Well you are both forgiven... lol

Heck I always wondered how a band would handle that well in front of a camera... now I know..

  • fuck off dickfaces. ZZ is the greatest ever. your mother sucks cocks in hell--bitches.

  • Comment removed

  • AHOLE we both love the band, I guess that was to complicated for you to understand the banter...

  • Comment removed

  • I think so. Mind you he's only been singing this song for 30 years or so. He'll get better with practise. lol, joking aside, they are still probably the best live act on the planet. Long may they continue!

  • He Left out the verse: Look how it happened to me

  • Dusty gets one of the best bass sounds ever!

  • maybe after Steve Harris

  • If you like this grab the new double down DVD coming out this month. you'll fucking love it!

  • Pearly Gates sounds awesome, bluesrock doesn't get any better than this.

  • I don't think that's Pearly Gates. She is a '59 Burst, he's playing a dark-back gold top (as far as I can tell).

I'm sure he retired Pearly. She was a knock-out though, you're right.

  • That's the meanest, badest, bestest drummer in the whorld!

  • Might we be forgetting a Mr. Bonham?

Still, this guy is totally awesome at drums, like seriously good. But I prefer Bonzo.

  • TONE comes from Fingers not just guitars n' amps. Ask any pro guitar tech, Eddie V sounds like Eddie V even through Claptons gear and vice versa. He's prolly got a Marshall JMP-1 preamp under the stage but Oranges and Marshalls are just a modded 59 Bassman circuit so they sound similar. Rev. Willy G. is truly awesome! Buy everything from their first album through El Loco and you got the best of Texas Blues N Boogie. Have Mercy Miss Percy!

  • It's in Elimination. It's a post Eliminator and pre Afterburner book about the band. Can't remember if it was Billy who described it himself or a journalist.Need to dig it out and have a read actually. Not read it in a while.I can hear where he's coming from, though.

  • I possibly didnt explain the last comment. the ZZ Top sound has,in the past been described as sounding like a car with four flat tyres driving on mud.did anybody know what i was talking about ;-) ?

  • I assume you are talking about their laid back groove. They definitely have it down cold. Not an easy thing to do either, so many bands sound stiff or hyper when playing blues based stuff.

  • Four flat tyres on mud!

  • Question, I just posted a video that I created featureing one ZZ Tops songs and you tube disabled the audio how do you post their songs and get away with it?

  • I guess the BBC do not persue copyright infringers.

  • @retrobiker I don't think they bother unless they're selling it on DVD. It's not as if advertisers are going to pull out either... It's not worth the time.

  • I think, although I may be mistaken, if it is a live version it is easier, it tends to be studio versions that cause the problem because the labels have the rights to the original sound recording.

  • @dealfinderforu You have to include copy right credits to the band and disclaim ownership.

  • one of their earlier tunes.. i love it!...

  • It's fun to see BFG loose himself in the lyrics of the second verse. A very rare mistake by that man...

  • Great performance! They need to do this one live more often.

  • best blues boogie band of all time billy you fuckin legend check out my channel for more

  • Fucking awesome!!!! from the best band on the planet, ZZ TOP. Even after 40 years they are still brilliant as the Live from Texas video proves. Hope to see them at Download!!! Rock on forever dudes.

  • Cup o' tea, luv?

  • Awsome vid/song/band...Lacks the intensity of the album version and some covers I've heard though.

  • Oh Nasty! Oh Funky! Love it!

  • This song jams. I can remember listening to it in high school in 1976. This is the best version I have heard. Saw them in Arizona in 1980..jamming at the Coliseum

  • Awesome vid... I have loved this song for years and years and years.. love the tempo..love the nasty sound..wished it was longer and here it is on youtube.. love this!!!!

  • Well, I knocked down on your door, baby, To see if you were at home. Your shade was down, there wasnt even a sound But something told me you werent alone. What in the world can a nasty dog do But try to get next to you? Dont laugh cause it aint funny. Look how it happened to me. It could happen to you, you could be a fool too And itd leave you in misery. I guess theres nothin more funky king can do But to try to get next to you. Mm, well.
  • That "retard" is jules holland performing proper inunsiation. Do the world a favour and get your own language before smirking at clearly pronounced words. zz top and robert de niro carry on speaking english though

  • Wow. how can you not love zz top

  • LOVE IT!

  • Bluezzz

  • Ladie and gentlemen. The fantastic ZZ Top!

  • God bless texas.

  • I don't think there is much doubt that the Rev used a very similar setup to this when they recorded Rhythmeen, it's so fucken' epic!!!

  • Could anything EVER sound any better than those Oranges? I'm sitting here in awe and cannot stop watching this, the tone is melting me, the both do an unreal job on the vocals in this particular show, it's so fucking sick!!!! Anyone know what else Billy had in his setup in this era?

  • Billy sounds the same regardless of what is on stage. It's a pretty poorly kept secret he is usually plugged into a Fender Deluxe Reverb somewhere under the stage or behind it. The stuff on stage is just for show and endorsement bucks.

  • Wrong--they always used Rio Grande amps.

  • Wrong, they only used Rio Grande's in the mid 70's, and Im guessing you didnt know - a Rio Grande was just a Marshall that was recovered and tweaked a bit by a guy in Texas. It was nothing special.

  • Right, now I remember seeing stacks of Orange amps at a 1997 ZZ concert.

I read they got the Rios at Jake's Amp and Bait Shop with the first big royalty check from "La Grange".

  • Hey, what kind of Oranges are these motherfuckers playing through?

  • I don't know. But did you notice that Billy has his head upside down? (If the tubes originally hang upside down, this inversion would put the tube above the amp chassis, letting the head rise up & away from the amp innards. If not, I dunno . . . ) Either way, he's so cool.

  • oops. I meant let the *heat* rise up & away from the amp. Can't type, and can't figure out how to edit a posting.

    Doesn't change anything: He's unbelievable.

  • Im highly honored to be here on this page with ZZTOP !

  • What a groove!

  • Who needs "Metal and Techno shredding" when there is classic Texas blues such as this. The guys are so cool, the charisma is there for all to see and hear. Thanks for the posting. (not bad for a track dating back to the early seventies)

  • the best ZZTOP song EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 100% solid rhythm section here. Gives Billy all the room he needs to drive it on home.

  • I'm in heaven.....my favorite ZZ Top song, Billy playing a single pu Les Paul (beyond cool,IMO), and as usual, tone to die for.

  • LOL, WTF did that guy who did the intro say? & at the end did he say "...the ZZ Top"? What a retard.

  • ZZ TOP RULES

  • This kicks so much ass that foreign ass had to be brought in so that there would be sufficient ass for zz top to kick!

  • Exactly! Where the hell are the uk dates? There's practically everywhere else in europe but! :0(

  • My favourite ZZ Top track, grinding low-end power plus melody, who else can do that ?Shame they aren't coming over to England...yet.

  • Thanks!

  • Thanx grim, i couldn't remember the title.

  • awesome. Thanks so much for putting these up. This tunes called "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings" if you didn't know though.

  • thanks bluespower

  • Great reverend Billi Gibbons, as usual. Thanks to B.P. for the notice.

  • Awesome tone! Orange amps rock! Thanks bluespower for the excellent vids as usual.

    Later
