No one can riff like Khan!!! Chaka can sing over the melody, under it,ahead of it then come back & catch up with itHer Improvisional skills are sick!!! Background vocals incomparable!!! This is a total singer!!!
D-I-V-A. That's what Chaka is. I knew waaaayyy back with Rufus' 1st album that the girl was SPECIAL! She has a projection & style that made her stand out from all the other female artists of the time. I'm willing to bet that if we fans call out to her long enuff, she'll give us ONE MORE great album!!!
Just want to say thanks for posting this JazzFunkster. I genuinely think it's one of the greatest soul/funk tracks ever committed to vinyl. The groove hits you from the first beat and then just rolls and rolls and builds and builds and at the end I ALWAYS have the biggest grin on my face. THANKS CHAKA, THANKS ARIF!
Damn she can sing. This is an absolutely awesome song. There's so much energy generating. Nothing is missing. The drums, piano, everything smokes. Sheeew!!! This is one that gets the extra volume and double play.
@charmaliqueNYC OH LAWD,I AM SO GLAD THAT SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS WHAT I KNOW,THESE GIRLS COULDNT CARRY CHAKA`S MIKE CASE TRYING TO SING CHAKA`S SONGS,I AM 56 YEARS OLE,LOL,AND I HAVE HEARD MOST OF THE BSET FEMALE VOCALIST IN MY YEARS,SINGING LIVE,YOU HEAR ME!,THE 70`S?,Y`ALL JUST DONT KNOW,I WAS BLESSED TO HAVE BEEN AROUND IN THE 70`S,LOLLLLLLLLL,SO MUCH FUN,LITTLE STRESS AND NOTHING LIKE IT IS NOW...
@5mralbert NOW DONT GET ME TWISTED,LOL,THE LADY YOUNGINS CAN SING IN THEIR OWN STYLES BUT NO TORCHES HAVE BEEN PASSED YET,BUT SOME PEOPLE THINK IT HAS...
THE LATE RICHARD TEE ON PIANO, AVERAGE WHITE BAND RHYTHM SECTION, TOM SCOTT ON LYRICON, CHAKA'S BROTHER MARK ON BASS-CHAKA OPENED UP A CAN OF WHOOP-ASS ON THIS. LOVED IT ALWAYS!!
thank you jazzfunkster444 this was on you tube maybe 5 years ago then someboby snatched it glad u brought it back chaka my girl the song the "cut" ol skool
@TheCmelmoneyman This is her brother Mark Stevens on bass. He co-wrote this with her. Can't you always tell the songs Chaka has co-written. There's an extra punch to it. This is the standout track I always go back to on her solo debut. I listen to it over and over. The vocal layers are beyond the balloon. Her runs on this are unstoppable. Go Chaka!
STRAIGHT UP FUNKY!!!! She's got some "heavy hitters" on this track....The debut album was OFF THE HOOK....I don't think there was a cut on there that I didn't like....Thanks, JazzFunkster, for keeping GOOD music like this alive!!!
This was my 1st song and intro to Chaka Khan (and Rufus).I was 10.I'm in my late 40's now and I just love her,Bob Marley is my 1st love, then chaka and Jimi,I know, what a mixture.Over the years I have embraced alot of her music, probably not all.XXX No-one compares.J.W
This woman is...Mere words can't even begin to describe just how powerful her vocal is on this track. This woman never really has receive the props that she truly has truly deserved.
@TheCmelmoneyman not only is Mark playing bass on this tune, thats him on the background harmony with her! And I totally agree; they are a talented family!!!
