The Crosby company's centerline boiler is the clue here. Lima Locomotive Works, Inc., would have used a boiler sized for a 2-4-2, offset to the left, on a later-build Class A Shay. Most Lima Shays had sand domes; not so this Crosby.
Actually, he is correct in every way. That dome like structure, situated atop the boiler is in fact a shroud that covers a branch fitting that comes out the boiler, that services the whistle, saftey valves, and the throttle plus the manifold in the cab.
