i don't know of any religious believers who only pray and expect their god to take care of other people. At my church alone we support a hospital, childrens home, food bank, and we hold blood drives for the Red Cross 4 times a year. 1st, not every Xian is in the same state of mind. What I'm referring to, is what I've seen happen to many Xians I've known. Also, their particular belief plays a critically important role.
To make it short and sweet, many Xians become obsessed with guilt (if they do the least thing that they see as wrong), they have this insane fear of god, and feel they must be perfect or not make it to heaven.
I've also known Xians who recovered from heavy drugs via being Born Again. They trade 1 addiction for another. 3 yrs ago, I saw this happen to a lady who I cared for very much.
Another problem is that Xians don't take responsibility for hard, personal decisions in life. That's a biggie. Many don't realize it. Problems arise, they just put it in god's hands!
Finally, the Xian who really know their scripture, must deny a part of their human decency in accepting the evil Xian god.

The court had to rule atheism was a religion so he could set up his group. Otherwise it would have breached his constitutional rights.

Wow this woman is dense! Christians have been responsible for everything she listed we should do. At my church alone we support a hospital, childrens home, food bank, and we hold blood drives for the Red Cross 4 times a year. And yes I and many others participate with our own hands and labor to see these come to fruition. Prayer is speaking to God, not an excuse to not do our part, get a clue.

@gmcjetpilot Until there is sufficient evidence for God, rejection of the claim is logically justified. The very reason atheism is correct: lack of evidence on the positive side of the argument. Science is the best method we have of understanding reality, faith is an excuse to believe whatever you want with no evidence.
YOU are making a positive claim that God exists. If I were to prove God wasn't real, I'd need to use negative evidence. There is NO SUCH THING. Evidence is positive in nature.

Atheism isn't a belief. It's a rejection of a claim for God for which no evidence has been presented for. Not a worldview or an ideology. It allows you to think for yourself and not follow 2000 year old subjective desert scribblings. Saying atheism is a worldview is like saying not collecting stamps is a hobby.

@gmcjetpilot Thirdly. Any logical atheist doesn't need faith. They can be intellectually honest and admit they don't know something yet instead of shoving a God into all the gaps that they don't know like Christians do.
It's pretty clear religion is a detriment to society. According to Christianity you can be a child rapist/molester/murderer and all you have to do is accept Jesus right before you die and you go to heaven. That's not moral. Atheists take responsibility for their actions.

Simpletons fall for nice sounding phrases that aren't even logical. There is more evidence pointing to the existence of intelligent design than not, therefore, more faith is required to be an atheist, and I don't have enough faith for that. If you are sure there is no Creator, that is faith. If you say "I don't know," that is true non-faith.

Theists love to proclaim atheism is a religion. They think it puts us on a level playing field with them, but that is so far from the truth, it isn't funny!
When they start that crap in debates, I tell them to drop the atheist label hangup (something they don't want to do), and use "non-believer" instead.
This takes the BS out of that approach. Anyway, that's all atheism is.
Xians say "their god exists" The atheist says, I see no evidence from u, prove it!
That's it, end of atheism as a religion

Religion is a Cancer of the mind, Atheism (non-belief) is the cure.
In other words, Xian (superstitious) "belief" is bondage, "non-belief" is freedom.
How is it that some people would confuse atheism with anything other than "non-acceptance" of theist claims that a ghost-god exists....unless they're just trying to cloud an issue that's been crystal clear from the start.

I'll be happy to share my findings with u.
1st, not every Xian is in the same state of mind. What I'm referring to, is what I've seen happen to many Xians I've known. Also, their particular belief plays a critically important role.
To make it short and sweet, many Xians become obsessed with guilt (if they do the least thing that they see as wrong), they have this insane fear of god, and feel they must be perfect or not make it to heaven.

I've also known Xians who recovered from heavy drugs via being Born Again. They trade 1 addiction for another. 3 yrs ago, I saw this happen to a lady who I cared for very much.
Another problem is that Xians don't take responsibility for hard, personal decisions in life. That's a biggie. Many don't realize it. Problems arise, they just put it in god's hands!
Finally, the Xian who really know their scripture, must deny a part of their human decency in accepting the evil Xian god.

So having any guilt is a waste of my time, because there is no need. Thirdly, I completely disagree that Christians don't take responsibility for personal decisions. It's like this, the only thing atheists have in common is our non-belief! Some atheists debate & can maintain perfect composure, day in, day out. This is extremely hard to do. I used to be worse than I am now. But let me clue u in to something, it isn't about bashing people bcuz they are theists. 2) Atheists persuaded a federal court to rule that it is a religion.
3) It displays the symptoms of a religion such as zealot behavior as you and other display.

@sh3rv 1) Actually they don't. You tried to fit the definition of atheism to fit it, but failed to come up with any evidence to prove it. But then you don't understand the term 'atheism' so then you wont get what religion means either.
2)You still haven't proven it was atheists. Its presumably because you can't. The federal court did not rule it as a religion. But you know that. They ruled that for first amendment purposes atheism WAS A RELIGION FOR THE DEFENDANT so as not to affect his rights.

The prison said atheism wasn't a religion to the inmate which is why it went to court, but I guess you know that right? So they ruled in favour of him and others like him in prison so as not to affect his constitutional rights. Don't forget that evidence though, the stuff you've been avoiding!

@sh3rv Nice try at trying to turn it all around! He wanted to start a group. The prison wouldn't let him because atheism isn't a religion. He took the prison to court. The prisons defence lawyer is a Christian and in answer to the verdict said: “Up is down, and atheism, the antithesis of religion, is religion,” so he didn't agree, clearly.
The court had to rule atheism was a religion so he could set up his group. Otherwise it would have breached his constitutional rights.

@sh3rv So the court only changed the meaning for that case (and others like it presumably) for first amendment purposes, not in general as you've incorrectly made out.
You've still not shown any evidence to show the term religion citing atheism as an example. You would have thought there would be examples listed if it really was a religion. You've also failed to back up your claims that atheists 'practice' and have rules to follow, as defined by religion. Your claims, not mine!

@sh3rv You're more convinced because you only want to accept the evidence that backs up your claims. If atheism is a religion then it puts it on a level playing field with religions like Christianity. Loads of religious people have tried this. You're not the first and won't be the last.
Its pretty much the same for me mate. So in my opinion (and Cootbux's by the looks of it) atheism is no more a religion than lacking a belief in Bigfoot, or the tooth fairy. It really is that simple.

If tomorrow Dawkins renounces atheism and becomes a Christian I think a large percentage of atheists will be lost at sea because they have put so much faith into his teachings. (this includes Harris and hitchens, it happened with Anthony Flew.)

It might be an unholy book to the religious, but apart from that its just another book. Nice try though! It might affect a few people if he renounced atheism as unlikely as that is, but it certainly wouldnt affect atheists on the whole as we're all different.
