of course it's unrealistic, do you think spiderman is realistic? the west have their comic books, and the east have their fairy tales. they're just for entertainment -_-
Why didn't he kill the First Emperor? The world would be a better place without a unified China challenging the divinely ordained domiance of the White Christians. To hell with coloured heathens!
This fight scene is beyond epic, it's uber to the balls! Can't believe how two people can take on an army, it's too metal and beutiful...at the same time!
BROKEN SWORD IS AN OFFICIAL BADASS!!!why you ask??? CUZ HE USES A FUCKIN BROKEN SWORD,and counters the king's direct hit in such fashion and elegance, it made me cry
Daoming Chen was fabulous in this movie, Jet Li too ofcourse. The way the story was put on film makes it incomparable with other movies in its category (300, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven and so on...)
I never made sense of the color scheme of this movie, I wont spoil it for you if you are unaware, but it is brilliantly done. Broken Sword is by far the most admirable character in any movie, whether action, eastern, or otherwise.... he is the ultimate warrior who has achieved ultimate love, inner peace, and prosperity.
Spartan shields were giant wooden shields coated in a layer of bronze.
The wushu genre is a "fantasy" genre. In real life, swords wouldn't be able to cut through ANY wooden shields (ie. the ones in the movie). And of course, people don't fly either.
People that think the fighting scenes are unrealistic certainly dont understand the movie... ofcause the fighting is unrealistic.. as every fight in this scene is happening in the thoughts of each of the 2 characters (it not suppose to be real).. that is why we see different colors themes as well, for each side of the story there is one interpretation of what has happened according to each narator... this part of scene is the king recalling what has happened in his own mind..
Spectacular film - notice that each of the main fight scenes have a particular colour associated with them; gold (forrest), white (library), blue (lake), black (chess house) and green (palace)
Trying to equip an army of dozens of millions with iron age technology was a mistake in the first place. Putting them against a pair of supernatural martial artists with custom-made weapons, doubly so. :D
The flying and gliding is real. When you become harmonious with Law, laws no longer limit or control to you, but the contrary, you control the laws. Through discipline or predisposition enlightened people were able to become harmonious with Law, and thus, the physical and cosmic laws were at thier command. In the case of the gliding, the laws of gravity were to some extent at thier command. The true pupose of martial arts is not combat, it is meant to develop harmony with the practioner and Law
Dude, you don't need to take every single thing in this movie "by-the-point" (means literally). If humans could fly like they do in this movie, we would probably stop using planes and cars. Right?
i dont know y people are so strict when it comes to things that are Chinese. didnt Hollywood movies have storylines like that all the time? Few people taking on an entire army?? Besides, the flying part we dont know if it acutally existed, but its an essential part of the Chinese mythical kung-fu literature called "Wu XIa"...just like the Greek have their tales of Greek Gods. I think Wu Xia stories are exaggerated (they're stories for entertainment after all) but they could be based on truth.
Ya but the Chinese story lines are way more cooler. But your comment about the Wu Xla makes a lot more sense. I always just figured the flying stuff just represent their amazing balance, skill and grace.
@Ginne86 I think this attitude comes from a desire to see realistic fight that I'm sure for a few people they can try to copy moves from. Just ignore them if they don't understand
@oishiasan damn right...in China the expression "walking in the air" also means something not understeandble for normal people, and that's why chinese warriors often fly in movies and legends
Not ignorant...just watch the film....Broken Sword came to believe that allowing the King to unite the warring states was more important than his, or Flying Snow's, revenge.
@Blain1971 The Roman Empire united the world and then crumbled into ruin because it conquered and destroyed to do so creating resentment. The Qin Dynasty failed because it did the same exact thing which resulted in China going through another Civil War.
Broken Sword was manipulated by his own foolish mind into thinking that its better to unite China at ANY COST. That's why his lover fought him, he betrayed her and her lost nation.
China today is under oppressive communistic rule. Go figure.
@Vigatos Woah...and on a comment I made 2 years ago...I'm honored. Now if the national lottery would just pick me out of the multitude. But I always thought that the Qin Dynasty failed because in reality the emperor was crazier than a fuckin' bat, taking mercury to increase his longevity and so forth, once he croaked it everyone just started fighting over the prize. The entire movie is pure fantasy anyhow, but still a good story, not many of those in the movies these days.
those thousands of soldiers using dagger-axes and spears... how are they losing to two people with swords? They were literally just running up to Leung Chiu Wai and Maggie Chung with their weapons poised upwards just to die...
It's a palace. I would expect the curtains are for decoration. But it adds to the scene since Broken Sword is wearing green and the curtains act as camouflage.
alrite. i think THIS is my favorite scene in the movie. ..flying snow & broken sword are frickn siiick. together they are beasts. they stormed in and wiped out the king's soldiers..and almost assassinated the king..broken sword ended up not doing it...
This scene is incredible. I mean, the way they charge in on their own and take on an army just to slay the emperor (but Broken Sword chose not to) and they fight so gracefully and of course, with honor. It's an amazing movie and it's scary because I'm sure there were some warriors like this back then.
is this from the directors cut, because i don't remember this scene when they aired it on tv here. in the end, the nameless killed the king and broken sword and flying snow came to aid him fighting the army outside, but were all killed eventually. the last scene only showed the wall of the palace covered in arrows, leaving 3 human shaped free spaces.
I didnt think the extras playing the soldiers did a good job at dying. Some of them fell over too soon. And about the shields that were cut off so easily, I think this is more of a literal metaphor that Broken Sword and Flying Snow had swords THAT durable and sharp to cut through metal shields
of course it's unrealistic, do you think spiderman is realistic? the west have their comic books, and the east have their fairy tales. they're just for entertainment -_-

Uhh, not it's not. The wushu genre is a "fantasy" genre - similar to heroic knights fighting dragons or invincible Greek heros of the Trojan war.
People cannot fly in real life. Martial arts doesn't enable people to fly.
And people can punch through bricks thanks to Wolf's Law - the bones in the body becomes denser and hardens after repeated stress.
