Beim Liedtext übersetzen ist es wichtig, nicht nur den Text richtig in die andere Sprache zu übersetzen, sondern darauf zu achten, das es auch zur Musik passt. Der durchaus gute Text lässt sich oft nicht mit der Melodie singen des wegen nur 4 Sterne von mir
My German grammar isn't great, so I'm going to respond in English:
I agree that it's great to have translations of songs that go with the music so they can be sung, but in my opinion, that's not necessary for subtitles. I decided to translate the show as directly as possible for two reasons. First of all, (especially after the Broadway production of Dance of the Vampires) I wanted non-German speaking fans of the show to know exactly what was being said.
It's impossible to keep 100% of the meaning of the original lyrics when you have to worry about making them rhyme and stay in time, so I didn't want to do that. I've actually never seen a musical professionally subtitled where the lyrics in the subtitles could have been sung, and that's never bothered me. I prefer getting the actual meaning through subtitles even if it makes them less elegant.
My second reason for translating the lyrics this way is that ElennaxTelrunya already made great subtitles that aren't literal translations but that can be sung with the music, so there was no need for me to make that kind of subtitles too. Sorry that this reply is so long it had to be split up across three comments; I just wanted to explain why I did the subtitles the way I did. I prefer this kind to the kind that matches the music, but to each his own.
Thank you so much for giving us an accurate English translation to the song. It's so much nicer than the Broadway translation.
I really appreciate your time and effort to do this! =)
