Fair would mean the questions within the test should match those given to both minorities AND whites. Back in the late 60's, the standardized tests given in public schools in urban America were different than those given in white neighborhoods or private schools with majorities of white children. IT was a way to keep black kids back.

No extra points for who your parents were, no lowering standards or saying those who did the best can't be promoted or accepted because they are not the right skin color or sex. Even so, Buchanan's point is that the harm it does to some groups (e.g. white males, Asians) is not worth the good it does for white females and non-black, non-Asian minorities. To return to the spider analogy, the spider must be killed without destroying the wall. That is to say, African Americans must be given a leg up without unfairly burdening other groups. To do this, Affirmative Action must be limited.

I'm not for it, I think it's inherently as biased as the system it's in place to counteract -- it tips the scales too much, but the idea that it's about slavery is downright ignorance. It's about the idea that people who grow up in relatively underprivileged cultures and areas, predominantly minorities, have a disadvantage, particularly in terms of fine speaking and writing skills, that tips the balance of standardized testing.

I don't know much about Mexican students, but as far as east coast hispanics, mainly Puerto Ricans, go they are pretty piss poor students even though they have better English than other hispanics. This is from attending and working in schools with a lot of hispanics. And most of them who do do well, are usually of European descent like Argentinians, upper class Puerto Ricans & Cuban emigres. Like you said, it's time for hispanics to fix their own countries instead of sneaking into the US.

Fair would mean the questions within the test should match those given to both minorities AND whites. Back in the late 60's, the standardized tests given in public schools in urban America were different than those given in white neighborhoods or private schools with majorities of white children. IT was a way to keep black kids back.

What in the hell does he mean "a fair test for everybody"? How is a test unfair (besides my accounting midterm)? A test can be studied for, you can prepare for the material. How is it unfair if all have the same opportunity to prepare? You either get it right or wrong, UNLESS he is publicly admitting that the black "minority" is at some sort of deficiency when it comes to test taking.
