It has to be the worst feeling evading a missle.....My dad was in, and my cousin IS in the air force. Sorry to see/hear your #4 man or woman was hit. God bless you and who ever else was in the air, hope you all made it through.
very intense video considering this is a real human being under real life threatening conditions this is not simulations by the visual speed of the pilots evasive actions i can just imagine the intensity of the g forces involved and of course this is a human fighting against a machine the Sam rocket wicht does not have the the same g limitations as humans have one saving thing can possibly be humans intelligence outsmarting these missiles
Homey needs to keep his energy up. Weaving back and forth at 250 kts isn't going to out maneuver a SAM. 'Course flying straight and level isn't too effective either, but from my arm chair position you would want to acquire the SAM visually and then manuever at the last second to evade.
Actually, retarding airspeed is indeed a defense. Yo-yo-ing, lagging, whatever you want to call it -- speed-breaking is a great defense. Speed is life, yes. But, in the end, ENERGY is survival. SAM's can't throttle-down. SAM's can't trade airspeed for altitude and manage energy in an manner that is of use for the arena. There is an advantage to a having a "monkey in the cockpit."
Not true. You want to manuever AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, but you also want to cover as much distance as you possibly can. Like you said, the SAM has a limited amount of fuel, and can only cover a certain amount of ground. But your hope is to manuever enough where he bleeds energy pursuing you(shortening his kill radius), but you want to keep your airspeed high enough to make it outside of that kill radius before he runs out of fuel. You want to optimize maneuvering against airspeed (and flare ALOT
If I got a warning on my radar warning receiver, I would know that it is a radar guided missile in pursuit. Then opening up the afterburner would have no effect on the missile (would be safe to do), incase IR sams were also inbound I would lay both chaff and flare, as I headed for the deck. Then I would go into a horizontal yo-yo laying chaff and flare in afterburner at tree top level. This would hinder (limitedly) enemy radar, and give AAA operators less time to fire at me.
Let me ask you something? What about being a 24 year old college student excludes me from becoming familiar with air combat and threat evasion doctrine? I have never flown into combat, but I can read books about it. Does that give me experience? No, does that give me a credible opinion? perhaps. This is after all YOUTUBE. The forum for the masses... Can you find a flaw in my reasoning???
It's the fact that you're only a 24 YEAR OLD COLLEGE STUDENT. I don't care how familiar you think you are with threat evasion. You don't have the slightest amount of military education to talk about air combat as if you do it yourself.
I talked about it from a tactical standpoint. I never claimed to have done it myself. Besides you know NOTHING about me, that cannot be found on my profile. I have read many technical books about military aviation, including books on optimizing energy useage vs maneuverability in combat situations. So in sumation: you sir, can go fuck yourself
I don't understand it seems like they are just flying around in tight circles doing loops and pulls, why would they not pop the chafe or flairs and kick in after burner while swinging the aircraft around to hit the deck? Its going to be much harder to get a lock if they are flying lower.
You're talking of "ground clutter." Yeah, that's valid. But even burning in a dive can't outrun a MACH-3 capable SAM. So, why take that chance. Check the top HUD indicator (compass). He's making a series of zone-5 (afterburner) jink turns to break lock. And, don't think for a second that he's not toggling off tin and flares. He's trained to pickle them the instant his threat warning system blares that he's being painted. Given the number of missiles, he's made a nice pass at this.
yeah, once SAM's in the air, diving for deck in a straight path is a waste of time. for SAM there is no up or down, only 3D-space. even if you are lower than the missile, it won't lose you to ground clutter as you're being painted by the ground station still lower than you, so jinking to break lock is your best bet. @swedevolvo: read a bit about how SAMs (targeting radar) work, and the answer will be obvious.
EM - Evasive Maneuvering. The strain in his voice is not "stress." He's tight and hanging tough. The strain is pressure. He is "breathing through the G" by way of the "hook." To breath and stay with it through heavy G-loading, we're trained to bare down (yes, like on the toilet) and breath in bursts. This is best executed with a "force" word, like "hook." G hurts. G is a bitch. But, the pain is worth it for a few long seconds if you can get back to the boat.
if you listen to the "stroke 3" co-pilot at the very end, he's breathing so hard cause he just lost consciousness due to the third evasive SAM defense maneuver. "stroke 3, you still there??" crazy.
At least he has survived, human lives are what's really important... Did he get release afterwards ? What happens to Allied pilots shot down in Iraq ?
Stroke flight was hitting an Iraki nuclear plant with dumb bombs. Pilot got hit and ejected, I think he was MIA. Can read about it in Keith Rosenkrantz's 'Vipers in the Storm' book.
And BTW, PGMs are delivered from 20-30k feet, not 60k.
The infantry is not always in armour... and an armour piercing round can get through the armour.
Hopefully the Iraqi resistance have shitloads of SAMs. They can shoot down more of you gutless wonders. Ohh rite, of course no one is as brave as US fighter bomber pilots, who drop precision guided ammunitions from 60000 feet in the sky, with no anti aircraft systems. Or the infantry who are protected in their heavily armoured vehicles and are supported by A10s and Apachees. You killed 500,000. Keep in mind those 22,000 wounded and the 3000 dead American volunteers. Cowards all of you.
if you hate the us so much why dont you go over there so we can bomb the shit outa you from 60000 ft huh? who's brave now bitch!!!!!! you fuckin terrorist!! this is america!! like it or leave it u fuckin commy peice of living shit!!!!!!
and the real cowards are thoe iraqis. pressing a button from the ground to kill us. why dont they bring there own planes up there to shoot us down. in fact since u hate america so much why dont u go up there so i can put a 20mm cannon shell up ur commy ass!!!!!
theres another video f-15 v f-16 dogfight which has bullshit comments about the f-16 being better wtf? the f-15 owns, they're never been beating in air to air like u said, i agree.
This is video from the 19th of Jan, 1991. The largest strike package of the Gulf War (50+ F-16s, plus F-15s and F-4s) went after Nuclear research facilities and related targets in Baghdad. Two F-16s were lost to SAMs. Both pilots survived, but became POWs.
The nightmare of every pilot in the world ... SAMs. If I got that right, one plane was shot down by a SAM ? I heard someone say "Someone has been hit" and later on someone did not reply to the status-call.
I guess the SAMs are either SA-2 or SA-3 .... powerfull fuckers indeed, but can anyone tell me what fighter aircraft that is ?
And when this infant son was born, God reached from his lofty perch and proclaimed, "this one shall have balls carved out of fucking granite."

right... because 24 year old college students ALWAYS know what to do when SAMs are being launched.
I wish everyone would shut the hell up and quit acting like you all know what to do if you're being targetted by sams.
unless anyone here is a military pilot you should all shut the hell up, none of us would really know what to do.

Yes, he got shot down. He ejected and was captured. First Viper combat loss in the war.
Stroke one also got hit, and even though the bird continued flying, he had to eject near the Saudi border.

If they were lucky they got rescued. The not so lucky were captured, beaten, paraded on CNN and released at the end of the war.
The absolutely unlucky went down with their planes and became KIA.
