I used to get bullied quite a lot at school. Sometimes they would all stand in a circle, yelling abuse at me and not allowing me to get on with my day. Did they have the 'right' to do that? Absolutely not. Street preaching is the same. They have the right to say what they want, but NO ONE has the right to bully other people, yelling, pushing, forcing opinions and most of all, threatening people with the idea of eternal torture.

I see it this way. They are preaching that this whole world is going down whether we like it or not. They say Jesus is the only way out. By turning from sin to Jesus they say He will save you. Census results show that Adelaide has the highest proportion of atheists in Australia. It's curious to see religious crazies in Adelaide respond to this by banding together in public gatherings and being agressive and confrontational towards members of the public. It's very rare to see the crazies gather like this in other Australian cities. You see the occasional lone crazy with a bullhorn or sandwich board proclaiming, "The end is nigh! Repent! Repent!" but hardly ever groups of crazies.

You post that violence and silencing free speech are not the answers, but I whole-heartedly agree with many of the posters here who say private property is private property. If it were my property, I would have every right to act against this. The preachers are clearly taking advantage of a situation and need to be told it is not only unacceptable but possibly illegal. How would they like it if I stepped into one of their churches and promoted atheism? Seriously, it's the same thing.
The best way to combat the religious is to ignore them. Every protest against religion is a way for them to cry "OPRESSION" :-( If I organised a protest it would be to boycott the mall on the days the preachers were there! A few days of them praching to nobody, not to mention the mall being empty (very bad for business) and they have been beaten and look like a general nusiance. (bad for publicity and recruitment) These people just want attention, even if it is negative attention!
@Widgetas Do they have every right to preach in a mall? On the street, fine; in a mall, which is basically a private business, no. What if they stepped into a supermarket and did the same thing? It is no different. They can use the street or public parks to shout their messages, but malls should be off limits--and that goes for people of any political stripe. Much as I hate a lot of big business, I don't think there are many circumstances that justify this at all.

I think that the best way to take care of it is for another group made up of both religious and non-religious free-speech advocates to protest the protesters while not endorsing the message of the original street preachers. Give it a week and then add another group of protesters to protest those.
Are they on private property? If the mall is considered private space then the owner/ manager of the mall is entirely within their rights to have them removed from the premises. Certainly violence is not the answer but i dont think i saw any violence. The arrested person was arrested for taking their sign, thus theft i would think not violent behaviour. Yet, this is not the best course of action. Lastly i dont think they should be silenced, but freespeach doesnt mean free property.

Census results show that Adelaide has the highest proportion of atheists in Australia. It's curious to see religious crazies in Adelaide respond to this by banding together in public gatherings and being agressive and confrontational towards members of the public. It's very rare to see the crazies gather like this in other Australian cities. You see the occasional lone crazy with a bullhorn or sandwich board proclaiming, "The end is nigh! Repent! Repent!" but hardly ever groups of crazies.

Haha ive had an pointless argument with that bull dyke in the yellow jersey outside of Flinders street steps one night here in Melbourne. The preachers were harrasing young groups of girls heading out to the city calling them sluts and telling them they would burn in hell etc etc. I actually would not have cared at that point if someone was to walk up and punch the preachers straight in their big fat ugly mouths. Im not promoting violence but i would not have intervened...

You post that violence and silencing free speech are not the answers, but I whole-heartedly agree with many of the posters here who say private property is private property. If it were my property, I would have every right to act against this. The preachers are clearly taking advantage of a situation and need to be told it is not only unacceptable but possibly illegal. How would they like it if I stepped into one of their churches and promoted atheism? Seriously, it's the same thing.

The best way to combat the religious is to ignore them. Every protest against religion is a way for them to cry "OPRESSION" :-( If I organised a protest it would be to boycott the mall on the days the preachers were there! A few days of them praching to nobody, not to mention the mall being empty (very bad for business) and they have been beaten and look like a general nusiance. (bad for publicity and recruitment) These people just want attention, even if it is negative attention!

@Widgetas Do they have every right to preach in a mall? On the street, fine; in a mall, which is basically a private business, no. What if they stepped into a supermarket and did the same thing? It is no different. They can use the street or public parks to shout their messages, but malls should be off limits--and that goes for people of any political stripe. Much as I hate a lot of big business, I don't think there are many circumstances that justify this at all.

@bartonim Ah well a private 'mall' is somewhat different. Why is this even an issue? The mall should be able to eject *any* people they don't want there. Where are their security or even the police to give them a hand.
The fact that they didn't do that would imply to me that it's an open shopping centre (public) rather than private?

I think that the best way to take care of it is for another group made up of both religious and non-religious free-speech advocates to protest the protesters while not endorsing the message of the original street preachers. Give it a week and then add another group of protesters to protest those.

Are they on private property? If the mall is considered private space then the owner/ manager of the mall is entirely within their rights to have them removed from the premises. Certainly violence is not the answer but i dont think i saw any violence. The arrested person was arrested for taking their sign, thus theft i would think not violent behaviour. Yet, this is not the best course of action. Lastly i dont think they should be silenced, but freespeach doesnt mean free property.
