I take this as a brilliant commentary on how derivative Hollywood has become. Observe the intentionally stilted acting, the plot which makes no sense but serves as a coat hanger for visual effects -- all of which were ripped off from better movies. Of course, all of that was intentional, part of the director's artistic ambition to expose the rotting heart of our "global infotainment" machine.
