I've got nothing against Angie Stone (I'm on here lookin for another of her songs) but this version is waay oversung. Some might like the style but I don't. Great concept, but it got bogged down with too many gospel-like additions. Especially in the chorus. Should've kept the chorus simple in the beginning and saved all the embellishments for the ending. But, the groove is undeniable.

Just cause you have a nice voice, ( which a lot of people do), does not give you the right to attempt to cover, and in the proccess destroy, a song that is WAY above your paygrade.
whats with the lyrics and this version? It was always "hoping for the arms of mater, strangled by the wishes of pater.. " i do love this version tho. but i think lyrics are rather sacred especially when youre doing a cover of a classic like this.
both versions are excellent, but, angie kind of ruined the emotion of the song a couple of times when she oversang some parts with her runs like most R&B singers do these days.
Doesn't even come close to Simply Red's version. I can appreciate that she likes the song and wanted to give it a try but this is lame. It's a good song. So good that it'd be difficult to make a bad cover. This isn't bad but it's not great either.

Hardly destroyed, in fact nicely chilled and well executed. Certainly not over sung 'like most r & b artists'. The only suprising thing about this tune is that hucknall wrote it!

Just cause you have a nice voice, ( which a lot of people do), does not give you the right to attempt to cover, and in the proccess destroy, a song that is WAY above your paygrade.

whats with the lyrics and this version? It was always "hoping for the arms of mater, strangled by the wishes of pater.. " i do love this version tho. but i think lyrics are rather sacred especially when youre doing a cover of a classic like this.

both versions are excellent, but, angie kind of ruined the emotion of the song a couple of times when she oversang some parts with her runs like most R&B singers do these days.

Doesn't even come close to Simply Red's version. I can appreciate that she likes the song and wanted to give it a try but this is lame. It's a good song. So good that it'd be difficult to make a bad cover. This isn't bad but it's not great either.

You're right, there's nothing wrong with it. I just don't think it's a very good version.
Look at other comments and you'll find that I'm not the only one who shares that opinion. Simply Red did it best.

This is a great version. A bit more advanced one than Simply Red's version (they went more for pop sound). Respect for Angie Stone!
