  • @celaine57 great surprise, a fat black girl has soul- still, the litte red guy kills her hard on this. sounds like a boring standard song here- he makes it special, breathing, grooving, living, by far..

  • @trannyniggr i agree and im black! lol

  • @trannyniggr If you do not like the song why comment? Hit the thumbs down and get to steppin. I get bored with people, loose term, commenting negatively about what ever. If you do not like it move on. The rest of us will appreciate it, the song and your absence for the posting board. My apologises to the board ya'll I just had to let it go.

  • CLASSIC!!!!!

  • my sister is loving this song right now lol, and i have a feeling so am i lol

  • I love this song and the movie.

  • Crap, why isn't this on iTunes?

  • Love...love her version of this song!!!

  • I was 15 when Love & Basketball came out... Thank you for introducing me to music I probably never would have listened to otherwise.

  • i did a tribute last yr to this song , i get the song, but then again i could b wrong. who can explain it? is she in denial of those years she claim shes wasted her tears on? yet shes gonna hold on to them

  • @nsatiablelov3thang2 see Holding_Back_the_Years on Wikipedia: "Frontman of the group [Simply Red], Mick Hucknall, wrote the song when he was seventeen, while living at his father's house. The chorus did not come to him until many years later. His mother left the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write the song."

  • @rockanne okk, thanxx its still confusing.. maybe i should read more abt whats it talking about. it just seems confusing

  • I like the original and this one too!

  • That bassline.... hot stuff.

  • When I hear this song when I'm watching Love & Basketball, my heart just melt!!!!

  • @atbarr1911 LOL ME TOO!

  • This is good, but the Simply Red version is just the best of all time, it's just timeless. This is somewhat forgettable....

  • @jriley1992 just what I said :) this is a boring bar song.. original is a romantic, grooving classic

  • She can sing, but it's not believable like Simply Red's version. Just sounds like good singing. She's not really telling a story. Didn't like hers. Sorry.

  • Got mad love for Angie, but I prefer the Simply Reds version.. :)

  • @snaz76 I agreee!!!!!

  • Damn, damn, damn....is all I can say. SMH That girl can sang

  • I love Angie's version. Beautiful voice!

  • @shanrobs I have 2 agree it sounds better than the original artist.......sounds more soft i guess

  • @tryvecta thats the point. its bland, boring, useless, completly exchangeable in instruments as in vocals

  • This Is Smooth Jazz With A touch Of That Good Gospel Feel.Good Job Angie Stone.

  • I like to start my day with songs like this full of emotion and meaning. Thanks for posting such an inspirational song. Life is too precious to waste time, or tears on unnecessary drama.

  • Good God, did anyone tell her that she got the lyrics wrong. Its, "Strangle by the wishes of Pater, hoping for the arms of Mater". Latin for mother and father or did she just simply add in her own?

  • How can anyone dislike this??

  • always love this song. Simply Red orig artist. Simply and Angie have done a duet live. You check it out. Angle love ur music.

  • HOOKED Enuff said

  • While this song reminds me of a life once lived. Love and Basketball is the furthest in my mind. No disrespect. it just reminds me of a loved ones wasted life. He had hope. He just didn't have the time. R.I.P. Sammy. He loved this song.

  • @Davisvrj2010 im there with you on that post

  • GOOD MUSIC .

  • Do yall hear that Organ going to church in the prelude?

  • I like when she says "if yall think this song is about love/(or a man) pull back and pulsate" because its about THE LORD and Him giving her strength to hold on no matter how tired or weary she gets!!!!

  • now this is sweet the organ that is a sweet sound! takes me right back to church back in the day!!

  • @jjclek75 WTF!?!? Admittedly, Mick Hucknall is a tit, but hardly!!!

  • which album this song came from? why i can't find the origin album of the song? thanks

  • Love & Basketball <3 Great Job Angie!!!

  • I love this song!!!

  • DAMN, this almost mad me start crying...

  • This is the song from Love and Basketball. Love that movie, makes me emotional.

  • There's way too much flowery embellishments in this version, and all the soul that the original had is pretty much lost. Just my opinion.

  • it starts off like a church song lol

  • i like 0:00-0:30 ha ha ha

  • i love this song when it was playing on love and basketball......i cry everytime i see that part, that movie is my favorite!!!

  • I've got nothing against Angie Stone (I'm on here lookin for another of her songs) but this version is waay oversung. Some might like the style but I don't. I admit I'm not a fan of hers but I know a few of her songs (and absolutely love a couple of them) and I haven't heard her sing like so OTT like this before; I prefer how she usually sings. Sorry but I prefer the original, it's a classic.

  • @cresceremuoventesi

what are you talking about. she sounds superb. chill and listen to the track properly. it does not detract form the original at all. where is it oversung?

  • @kescasper None of your response makes sense. Only a fanatic would be unable to hear the distinct difference between this version and the original. You prefer this one, good for you, that's your choice. Are u expecting me to sit here and give you points in time where the sung is oversung? Otherwise what is the point of that comment. Get a life and realise that people are going to disagree with what u think. Sounds like you are old enough to know that by now. Have a nice day.

  • @cresceremuoventesi

What? How sad and trite your comment are She's a soul singer singing a song her way. What are you a music teacher playing piano to yourself. Like I said before chill. Is life really so serious for you? It's just s song. And you seem a little overwrought and I see another stompy fit coming my way from you. Go on treat yourself.

  • The lead guitar is Awesome!! I really love songs where they have real musicians playing instead of programed music.

  • I feel this song so much.

  • YummY!

  • POW WOW POWERFUL THRILLING VIBRATIONS ~ SUNSHINE SMILES :) THANK YOU NAMASTE :)

  • is this the version played in love and basketball???

  • @sassydiva05 not sure if its played in the actual movie but its on the soundtrack!

  • @meme5976 it's played when their grown and he's abouta marry tyra....somewhere round' there lol

  • When i first heard this song was on love and basketball and i just felled in love with it..omg i love dis song..angie stones just did her thang singing this song..i love it

  • @Miistay0732 me too!

  • Great concept, but it got bogged down with too many gospel-like additions. Especially in the chorus. Should've kept the chorus simple in the beginning and saved all the embellishments for the ending. But, the groove is undeniable.

  • Angie Stone is one bad BISH. She is extremely underated in the soul genre. Sista can SAAAANG. I love this version because it is sooooooooo soulful.

  • @ninibabez12 The group is called Simply Red. It's a really old song. I was like a toddler when it came out lol. I think the group is from the UK or something. Check it out.

  • I keep telling my friends this shud b our graduation song!

  • i swear that if I make it in singing, I'mma attempt to bring it back to what it once was

  • thanx from a far away place for the good music. antananarivo madagascar

  • Can someone please tell me. ''What groups Angie Stones used to be''? I want to know. What the name of the groups with 2 guys back in the early 80's to 90's.

  • @giveupmymoney Angie Stone was in the group Vertical Hold.

  • oh wow! I am moved by both versions! I didn't know she remade this! do it Angie!

  • Adriana Evans' albums "Walking With The Night"

& "El Camino" now available in the US on itunes

    & Amazon!!!!!!!

  • This song speaks to my life. I fell in love with a wonderful guy then we broke up it is so hard to let him go completly i just can't seem to find love again i keep holding on to the good times we share and all the promises he made i love him so much we realy had something good but allowed people to tare us apart i still love you baby.

  • omggg yessss i love this version..that organ taking me to church..!!!!

  • From the "Love and Basketball Movie Soundtrack" HATERS I will keep HOLDING ON, you can't destroy me nor hurt me...it isn't your right!!!!

  • her voice is so pretty!!!

  • i love this song

  • I love dis song. reminds of the part on love & basketball when monica goes in her room and put all her old memories away. and looks out her window to see if Quincy is in his room. and then Quincy later on look across his window to see if monica is in her room.

  • @gobblerun you better know the movie lol...

  • Love it! love it love it love it!

  • Has anyone ever heard the Isley Brother's version of this song? Angie's version and Simply Red's version is definitely better than that one.

  • Simply Superb!!

  • bhosar chodi teri maa ko chodon ache bhale gaane ki maa choddi tmne bhenchod randi kahin ki.... JAHAIN GUI MEN ....

  • Thanx 4 postin!

  • I've looked high and low for this version myself. I do know that ITunes does not carry this and neither does the Love & basketball soundtrack. So I am still in search of. My baby girl can sing her ass off though so untill then I'll have get my fix here. Thanx to the one that put this up...

  • what do u mean I bought the soundtrack just for this song:)

  • sorry apparently there's two versions of the soundtrack

  • I downloaded this verson off of limewire

  • Love the song, Love the Movie

  • would anyone know where i can find Angie stone-(holding back the years) version that was played during the movie?

  • Simply Red Forever!!!

  • what do fantasia got to do with this song

  • I'm loving this version. Good job Angie

  • the one and only fantasia is coming out with her vh1 reality show "fantasia for real" that airs on vh1 jan11 don t miss cause its gonna be the bomb

  • beautiful

  • thats a pretty pic and on love and basketball...[my fave movie] i always tear up when this song plays

  • same here

  • I love Angie Stone and I love this version. I love the soul and feelings that Angie puts into all of her music. Her voice is definantly rare. This is what R & B should sound like and once did. Pleasse bring it back!!!

  • would you happen to know where i can find the version that was played during the movie i like that one better.

  • @Ricox4ever I agree.

  • @Ricox4ever I agree !!!

  • Love this version, never knew Angie had covered it, anyone know if you can download it anywhere?

  • One of my favorite songs sung by one of my favorite artist from one of my favorite movies!

  • She went to church on this version (dig the organs). I love Simply Red and I gotta give props to the original, Angie did it justice

  • yeah sure Angie Stone have a amazing voice but i must say that with Simply Red ist better......

  • Even more amazing is that Mick Hucknall wrote most of this track when he was 17. Agree with cluba on this...like this version as well. Not overdone at all. Gotta love Angie.

  • WOW... Beautiful rendition. ;-)

  • magnifi cent!

  • I have heard both versions and they're both great in their own way!!! LOVE ANGIE!!!! If u hadn't heard the original, this would be a great song like it is!! =)

  • I love this song...Go Angie!

  • Hardly destroyed, in fact nicely chilled and well executed. Certainly not over sung 'like most r & b artists'. The only suprising thing about this tune is that hucknall wrote it!

  • To each it's on about this song so sing Angie!!!

  • What Have You Done??!!

Just cause you have a nice voice, ( which a lot of people do), does not give you the right to attempt to cover, and in the proccess destroy, a song that is WAY above your paygrade.

  • Je l'écoute magnifique ^^ JL

  • whats with the lyrics and this version? It was always "hoping for the arms of mater, strangled by the wishes of pater.. " i do love this version tho. but i think lyrics are rather sacred especially when youre doing a cover of a classic like this.

  • Ive Beehn Looking For This Song For Ever, Ever Since I Saw Love & BasketBall! Lauhve This Song ; Angie Did Her Thangg<3

  • both versions are excellent, but, angie kind of ruined the emotion of the song a couple of times when she oversang some parts with her runs like most R&B singers do these days.

  • Doesn't even come close to Simply Red's version. I can appreciate that she likes the song and wanted to give it a try but this is lame. It's a good song. So good that it'd be difficult to make a bad cover. This isn't bad but it's not great either.

  • Whats wrong with a person taking a song they like a putting their own style in it? Quit being negative.

  • You're right, there's nothing wrong with it. I just don't think it's a very good version.

Look at other comments and you'll find that I'm not the only one who shares that opinion. Simply Red did it best.

  • I will agree ......SIMPLY RED's IS AMAZING!!!!! And we all know that in most cases ..the original beats all hands down....

  • AMAZING!!!

  • Angie is good but she can't touch simply red. They did the damn thang!

  • It it wasn't for black artist like Angie Stone, simply red wouldn't be doing what he is doing....feel me?

  • Thanks for posting the lyrics, but I like Red's version better.

  • makes me cry everytime =[

its reminds me of my life . .

  • Song of my life period

  • This is a great version. A bit more advanced one than Simply Red's version (they went more for pop sound). Respect for Angie Stone!

  • uqqqh. finally ifiqured who sinqs this. iLOVE this sonqqq. =]

  • I love Angie Stone and she can do no wrong in my books. The woman can outsing almost all these wannabes any day, anytime and any place.

  • I like Reds version better.

and Im black and I know my soul.

She just didnt bring it like he did.

and Im hard on white folks.
