the hand drill used in this vid is called a Brace & bit i have a couple of them wich i have no intention on useing sinse i have power lol, the brace has a rachet reverse on it to incase the bit gets stuck in the timber
@CastingStonez some people used to do exactly what he did for the first logs, just peg and notch the whole thing with logs and flatten the tops, made a solid insulated floor.
I have one of those hand-drills! They're really great, especially with an auger bit, because you can get as much torque as you want.
And $3 for a wondow? that's insane.
I was thinking about the bark and your no wasage policy. I think you can make string and rope from bark, if you boil it up with.. lye(?) maybe i'll look it up. But bark can definitely be useful.
I'm counting heavily on the "stuff the goop" maneuver later. A real log builder would have a cow at some of the stuff we did, but hey it works and there's nothing going to go wrong that can't be fixed by a judicious application of spray foam!
I think you're giving us less credit than we deserve. Most of those logs fit really tight. there are a few corner spots, and the roof gaps, but... other than that, all the stuff thats finished is pretty good.
Dude, I really gotta tell you. You keep me motivated. I've been working on my new and improved Koi Pond/ water falls in my back yard. I'll have to make a video of it. What sucks for me is I only did a few shots of video when I was building it. I had wet fish hands most of the time and didn't want to grap the camera. That's way I think it's great of you to shoot while you are building. Oh yeah, did I mention I built...er' ah' still building, my own house as well.
Oh, no way! Whats your house like? I'm working on clearing and levelling a road this week. its not the greatest video stuff. ....but its all part of a massive operation. operation Crazy operation
No! I did not mean the construction was faulty. We just did not use the shrink-to-fit notches that are popular these days. I also cheated with the single gasket- most folks seem to put one on each side of the log. I did not know if we would have enough to do that so I went with one line down thwe middle and figured I'd be sealing the sides with caulk anyway.
My friend just bought acreage in a remote part of AK and is planning to build a somewhat elaborate log cabin, I'll be sending him a link to your vids in case they are helpful to him.. clearly these fresh cut trees will dry out over time, (significant shrinkage) and I'm wondering how well all these green logs will fit after they season? obviously you have worked with this material before on your place so I'm guessing it is not a big problem..
Ya... I did what I could about the shrinkage. ...countersinking screws and things. ...putting some pretty thick spongy stuff betweem the logs, but there is always the posibility that things will shrink really really unevenly....
That ought to be ok since it's all interwoven, right? So it won't just fall over if one side shrinks more than the others... just stuff some goop into the cracks that show up, and you're good to go!
I feel so, sort of... Special, that I know what a hand drill is, and how to use one.
We used one to stick a wire round my house ages ago, and I saw, and went fanatical, and started drillingholes in pieces of wood everywhere. I was only little...
Ya. I think I'm getting better at these documentationismistics. ....but I still look at the camera sometimes with a blank look. ha ha. I think its funny to leave that stuff in there
You both make this look easy & I know it's not .. Back long ago in a galaxy far far away I used one of those manual hand drills ... I think my arms are still sore lololol
Hey... i tried to make sufficient grunting sounds. ....so it sounded hand. ha ha. Actually, those are real. Drilling felt easy after moving logs, though!
Actually, I do my own thing most of the time, but any time an interesting project comes up, I jump on it. I'd way rather do that and put my stuff on hold than work a regular job. blah

I know I will sound dumb for this, but what is the advantage of tearing the bark off the logs?
McMaster 1 year ago
Use gators so you dont get crap in your shoe.

Hi, How much did it cost to get the suplays to make it? What tools did you use? I am planing on building a cabin in Canada.
trentonpass 2 years ago
On the flooring??? If you didnt have ply wood... then how would you build a log cabin floor???
I have been trying to find this info...
Big Steve
thanks
CastingStonez 2 years ago
just use boards. Cut logs in half lengthwise. Or cut em into multiple boards.
JMEMantzel 2 years ago 2
@JMEMantzel
Okay... might be a stupid question coming from a flat lander who just moved to the local mountains in SoCal...
"How did he plain the logs flat?" I know he used his chain saw... but staying true to a straight line had to be a bitch... so... How?"
thanks very much...
