Everyone might have a bad night, but the bad note at 3:27 speaks volumes about his alleged greatness. This is his signature song and he can't play it cleanly?
@atty1chgo "look up Bachman Turner Grey Cup HQ" Canadian Football LEague Grey Cup 2010 listen to this man sing at like 80 yrs now lol (2nd song in and takin care of business especially)... not to mention hes been holding up mainstream rock'n roll since the days of the guess who- thats why hes legendary ya squab
@flyingporcupine2 didn't say that he wasn't legendary, just that he has seen his better days as a guitar player. That's OK, just play the music in your head while you watch him perform, it will be OK.
C.F. Turner sang the vocals on the original, but Randy doesn't sound too bad on it here. I noticed he modulated the highest part of the song down a bit. I guess it's hard to hit those high notes when you're pushing 70 years old! Smokin' guitar work, though!! Great sound quality on this, too.
leopoldmozart, Randy Bachman and Fred Turner are doing an album together due out in Spring 2010 and are going on a world tour, so you'll get to hear your Bachman-Turner version of Blue Collar soon.
Awesome song, GREAT live playing. The original is definitely a "top 500 of all time" song.
Way back when BTO 1 came out, I tried arranging it for stage band. Mute trumpet wahs, the echo guitar solo, the recorded arrangement nearly note-for-note without guitars, but it was WAY too much work without a computer. Someone should do it now - it would be SO GOOD. Fess up, trumpet players - you'd LOVE to play that wahwah solo.
Oh boy do I love this song!! Pure genius. There is a 2004 video on youtube of the Turner/Murray BTO doing Blue Collar; if somehow we could merge Turner's vocals and bass with Randy Bachman's guitar, we'd have a perfect song. In fact, if Turner and Bachman ever got together I'll bet they'd make a great band.
I always think of Blue Collar as a Canadian working class Black Magic Woman. I just don't understand why Blue Collar isn't more popular.
is there any solo that I can play with this song? I need to play some solo and I don't have, I mean I don't know what kind of solo play with this song for music night.
@atty1chgo I He is definitely in the class of those players. But, I would specify it in the pop and rock category. None of those players compare to Lenny Breau, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Mike Stern etc.... Now let the arrows come my way. lol
@darkoanton5 I was at the Crossroads Guitar Festival this year. Jeff Beck played a great set, but the set that Clapton played with Steve Winwood, Chris Stainton (keyboards) and Steve Gadd on drums blew him away, at least that night. They are both great, but to say that Eric Clapton is "hardly in the class of a Jeff Beck when it comes to guitar playing" just has no basis in fact, and just shows more clearly that you don't know what you are talking about.
@atty1chgo They are both hardly the quality of guitar players like Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Al DiMeola, Lenny Breau, Pat Martino etc... I'm not saying they are not good players but they are definitely a step down(yes even Jeff Beck)
Sound and video is excellent on this clip. This has always been a favorite of mine since I got the album in 75. His solos here are very close to the actual album's solos. The jazzy end solo is phenomenal and very overlooked by rock guitarists. Thanks for posting.
Keep rockin', Randy! This is better than the original, which I stood in line to buy at Sam Goody's in 1975! :-)

The guy's almost 70, so let's cut him some slack. Go back and listen to the studio version. That's some brilliant playing at the end of the song.

One of the best guitar players ever - definitely in the same company as Clapton, Page, Beck, Lifeson, Emmett, Cockburn.

@atty1chgo lol I give Clapton that he can write a great song but he's hardly in the class of even a Jeff Beck when it comes to guitar playing.
And who mentioned Cockburn????
