Whoever was actually watching him perform on this particular day....Singing this particular song, should step up to the keyboard now and allow us to hate u lucky mofos for life. This has to be arguably the greatest live perfomance in music history. Yeah. I said it. Music History...
So I posted a response to this, kind of feel bad coz Jeff's version was so sic, but kind of recorded mine to pay hommage so to speak. The way I see it you cant compete with this guy, haunting music
holy fucking shit, i never knew this guys vocals were this sick. And he has an amazing ability to get lost in the music and really start reaping shit from his soul. WOW that note at 7:24 my god what range.
fucking awesome. he could truly express the feeling of being alive, I can feel the strenght, freedom and creativity in his voice - such a free nature's force
Saw him in Austin, Tx, We were waiting to hear that voice our whole lives and there he was......when he moved on, I got the same feeling as when John Lennon passed except I was Jeff's age and got to see him perform live....what a huge bummer,eh! For all of us.
I'm having trouble decide which record to buy: the four-song original or the Legacy Edition. I wonder if the song versions are varied. Anyone have a recommendation?
you cant draw comparisons between any cover version jeff did i dont think. he just always makes it his own. love his take on this song. a man sorely missed
it astonishes me how buckley hits all the right notes his voice slides in to place so naturally and its true he could play the guitar like a piano. the most skilled musician in both voice and guitar i've ever heard. such power and emotion is put into this, as with all his music and all his performances; and obviously it takes genius to recognise genius but how buckley transformed and augmented others songs as well as his amazing writing talents never cease to amaze me
Does anyone know if Jeff used a capo on this one or if he went with the barre chords? I use barre chords and its fucking hard as shit with my little hands.
@restlesspride666 - he didn't use a capo for this song. not many full barre chords though, he leaves the bottom E,A string droning alot and makes the chords changes (Am,Dm,Am,Em.....C,G,G,F,E) on the top 4 strings.
@catherinewheels11 I see. Thanks a lot, I listened to Van Morrisons version of this song and it was a killer too. Did he downtune the E to D like he liked to on a few songs or is it left alone?
@dannelson269 I know i was being cheeky. as in that einstein fellow seems pretty smart. actually everytime i here jeffery scott i realize ill never have to do anything like oh say shoot heroin because all i got is put some buckley. and yes unbelievably somehow he always gets better :)
There is no denying his complete submission into expression... Jeff Buckley has long been my number one inspiration but this is the first time I have heard this recording and it just cries out confidence commitment entrancement and sheer lostness in his song... Not even close to my favorite but I just cant help but smiling listening to it... Totally sums up Jeff's rawness and purity. A full hearted artist, no doubt there.
@Danerage pretty sure it's a B5 or C6... I've always heard people say it's a D6 but I just don't hear it. He also is tuned slightly flat so it's hard to accurately hear it
@MrScary5150 Yep you are exactly right it was the '94 Waterloo in store, did I already comment to you're post to me seems I did. Well I'm visiting him again.
@traction420 You're so lucky :] I'm an aspiring vocalist, and Jeff Buckley, along with Chang Yu-Sheng, are my inspirations. I sing in a super high voice like Chang Yu-Sheng but my voice has that lusty velvet quality when I imitate Jeff :]
That's what I thought, but then you listen to the high notes on "Gunshot Glitter" and you hear him do a few super-register vamps and realise they're at least an octave above the usual top of his range.
Gunshot Glitter is an Eb6, the highest note here is D6. The highest note I've ever heard him hit was a G#6 in an interview with triple J. The lowest he gets to is a G2 at the beginning of Dream Brother in Chicago. He also gets an A5 in full on the recording of Grace from the Knitting Factory in 1997. Amazing voice, and sadly missed.
G-spot, lol, you got that right for sure!!! He's excellent isn't he?? gosh i love him and wish he was still here. he's an angel. my favorite part is still 7:22 - 7:25.
I thought men don't own the pleasure of having a G-spot, but darn if he just didn't found mine.
Which begs an interesting philosophical question: if a white western heterosexual male situated in the dominant gender performativity mode of the 21st century is sensually aroused by such non-visual, non-present non-tactile phenomena such as a voice - is he an extrasensitive synesthysiac, a music appreciator, or a flaming queen?
Easily best song on sin-e probably one of his top 3 best songs. amazing how he manages to play a fast guitar but keep his voice calm, plus the unnaturally high notes!
grace brought jeff into the mainstream and got him a bit of commercial fame, but for me and all jeffs fans the sin e recordings are how he should be remembered , you should ve come over
The Transformation of Orpheus
O cruel river, lift him up! Do not drown, don't snuff this one's fire...
transform this gentle Orpheus into living light
that joyful heals all our hearts!
Did he reach for musical notes in that Mississippi sun
and fall short in the eddies of derangement and confusion?
Too good to live? Again? How many magic-men of song
Ripped away by jealous devils, in deaths so wrong?
Ah, but he transforms, changes light itself
His soul freed in darkened river-stealth...

His vocal technique is stunning, absolutely stunning. I like to listen and learn.
Experts place his vocal range between four and six octaves. Most pop singers don't even have two!
