  • The Transformation of Orpheus

O cruel river, lift him up! Do not drown, don't snuff this one's fire...

transform this gentle Orpheus into living light

that joyful heals all our hearts!

Did he reach for musical notes in that Mississippi sun

and fall short in the eddies of derangement and confusion?

Too good to live? Again? How many magic-men of song

Ripped away by jealous devils, in deaths so wrong?

Ah, but he transforms, changes light itself

His soul freed in darkened river-stealth...

  • Whoever was actually watching him perform on this particular day....Singing this particular song, should step up to the keyboard now and allow us to hate u lucky mofos for life. This has to be arguably the greatest live perfomance in music history. Yeah. I said it. Music History...

  • <3

  • To the two who dislike this and must have hearing impairments - aids are reasonably priced nowadays.

  • @bertbretherton im sure they tried to like it but their fingers slipped

  • Wow is all I can say, Listening to Jeff Buckley is better than any sex i've ever had. .wow.. that voice still sends shivers down my spine.

  • So I posted a response to this, kind of feel bad coz Jeff's version was so sic, but kind of recorded mine to pay hommage so to speak. The way I see it you cant compete with this guy, haunting music

  • holy fucking shit, i never knew this guys vocals were this sick. And he has an amazing ability to get lost in the music and really start reaping shit from his soul. WOW that note at 7:24 my god what range.

  • I'm speechless! :D

  • 2 people must have been browsing hanging by their feet

  • one word... transcendental

  • Anyone got tabs for this?? Need to learn it :)

  • some wonderful nina simone vocal vibes going on I think, such gorgeous music

  • This is an absolutely amazing performance.

  • 2 People don't know their prefixes.

  • HOLY FUCKING SHIT. This is straight from heaven.

  • this is just godly....

  • fucking awesome. he could truly express the feeling of being alive, I can feel the strenght, freedom and creativity in his voice - such a free nature's force

  • 1993 was the year I was born. Mum said she used to play in when she was pregnant, so I could say I've been listening to Jeff all my life <3

  • @xxXXxPagexXXxx lovely comment!! ^^

  • Saw him in Austin, Tx, We were waiting to hear that voice our whole lives and there he was......when he moved on, I got the same feeling as when John Lennon passed except I was Jeff's age and got to see him perform live....what a huge bummer,eh! For all of us.

  • Always wanted to see.......never made it. Definitely my favorite solo artist of all time.

  • @TuliTheUnruly Get Both!

  • I'm having trouble decide which record to buy: the four-song original or the Legacy Edition. I wonder if the song versions are varied. Anyone have a recommendation?

  • @TuliTheUnruly buy both

  • this guy was a genius.

  • words cannot describe.

  • you cant draw comparisons between any cover version jeff did i dont think. he just always makes it his own. love his take on this song. a man sorely missed

  • this man is my heroin.

it astonishes me how buckley hits all the right notes his voice slides in to place so naturally and its true he could play the guitar like a piano. the most skilled musician in both voice and guitar i've ever heard. such power and emotion is put into this, as with all his music and all his performances; and obviously it takes genius to recognise genius but how buckley transformed and augmented others songs as well as his amazing writing talents never cease to amaze me

    x

  • Does anyone know if Jeff used a capo on this one or if he went with the barre chords? I use barre chords and its fucking hard as shit with my little hands.

  • @restlesspride666 - he didn't use a capo for this song. not many full barre chords though, he leaves the bottom E,A string droning alot and makes the chords changes (Am,Dm,Am,Em.....C,G,G,F,E) on the top 4 strings.

  • @catherinewheels11 I see. Thanks a lot, I listened to Van Morrisons version of this song and it was a killer too. Did he downtune the E to D like he liked to on a few songs or is it left alone?

  • JEFF. the everything musician. everything to everyone.

  • man this buckley guy he's pretty good...:P

  • @KingMinosxxvi man he only gets better

  • @dannelson269 I know i was being cheeky. as in that einstein fellow seems pretty smart. actually everytime i here jeffery scott i realize ill never have to do anything like oh say shoot heroin because all i got is put some buckley. and yes unbelievably somehow he always gets better :)

  • @KingMinosxxvi he's the fucking king

  • There is no denying his complete submission into expression... Jeff Buckley has long been my number one inspiration but this is the first time I have heard this recording and it just cries out confidence commitment entrancement and sheer lostness in his song... Not even close to my favorite but I just cant help but smiling listening to it... Totally sums up Jeff's rawness and purity. A full hearted artist, no doubt there.

  • What a waste. Anyone who's lost a loved one will relate to this.. Jeff Buckley or no, it's such a damn waste.

  • the guy twho unliked this video should go to hell really man how can you unlike this piece of art ?

  • SCARY

  • Jeff Buckley is the most talented and purest artist that ever lived. His beautiful soul is utterly inspiring.

  • The D6 he hits in this song is incredible. I've yet to hear a better one from any other singer.

  • @Danerage pretty sure it's a B5 or C6... I've always heard people say it's a D6 but I just don't hear it. He also is tuned slightly flat so it's hard to accurately hear it

  • Núnca tive o imenso prazer de conhecer o Jeff, mas tenho agora o imenso prazer de o ouvir até que a dor me canse.

  • I saw Jeff also once in Austin @ an instore, never heard of him before but have been listening to him ever since.

  • @nat00ben06

I'm assuming it was the instore at Waterloo in '94. The last 16 years have been spent in regret about missing that. Lucky you.

  • @MrScary5150 Yep you are exactly right it was the '94 Waterloo in store, did I already comment to you're post to me seems I did. Well I'm visiting him again.

  • I had the pleasue of going to one of his shows shortly before his passing, at the Charles Playhouse in Boston Ma.

One of the best live perfomances I have EVER witnessed he Was A HUGE talent

  • @traction420 You're so lucky :] I'm an aspiring vocalist, and Jeff Buckley, along with Chang Yu-Sheng, are my inspirations. I sing in a super high voice like Chang Yu-Sheng but my voice has that lusty velvet quality when I imitate Jeff :]

  • @restlesspride666 how modest

  • @restlesspride666 lol. I don't think that even Jeff himself described his voice in such grandeur...

  • He is awesome I can't stop listening this video !!

  • His vocal technique is stunning, absolutely stunning. I like to listen and learn.

Experts place his vocal range between four and six octaves. Most pop singers don't even have two!

  • Its closer to 4 Octaves

  • That's what I thought, but then you listen to the high notes on "Gunshot Glitter" and you hear him do a few super-register vamps and realise they're at least an octave above the usual top of his range.

  • Gunshot Glitter is an Eb6, the highest note here is D6. The highest note I've ever heard him hit was a G#6 in an interview with triple J. The lowest he gets to is a G2 at the beginning of Dream Brother in Chicago. He also gets an A5 in full on the recording of Grace from the Knitting Factory in 1997. Amazing voice, and sadly missed.

  • The high Eb6 you refer to in Glitter sounds like the one he hits at around 3 minutes, is that the one you mean?

  • Yeh, his voice sort of breaks into it.

  • woah.

  • He sounds like he's tremendously influenced by Nina Simone and Cassandra WIlson. Would love to hear Cassandra Wilson cover it.

  • and perhaps also Ella Fitzgerald?

  • and mabey his dad??

  • G-spot, lol, you got that right for sure!!! He's excellent isn't he?? gosh i love him and wish he was still here. he's an angel. my favorite part is still 7:22 - 7:25.

  • rubbish, just enjoy the music ffs.

  • I thought men don't own the pleasure of having a G-spot, but darn if he just didn't found mine.

Which begs an interesting philosophical question: if a white western heterosexual male situated in the dominant gender performativity mode of the 21st century is sensually aroused by such non-visual, non-present non-tactile phenomena such as a voice - is he an extrasensitive synesthysiac, a music appreciator, or a flaming queen?

  • that's a good question.

you cant deny it's not a "present phenomena" though...

  • @28g34ajbsd flaming queen.

but I felt the same, which makes it two of us

  • maybe alittle of all three? :P Or you are alike him in some way and that way his music style/voice speaks to you...if that makes any sence :)

  • don't say a word.

  • Increible!, Buckely es tremendisimo.

  • Easily best song on sin-e probably one of his top 3 best songs. amazing how he manages to play a fast guitar but keep his voice calm, plus the unnaturally high notes!

  • Please link this to anyone that has a list of top male singers of all time without Jeff in them....

  • How about 11 out of 10/ If there is a better performance live, one man and a guitar, I want to know about it. Ta for posting this absolute treasure.

  • Woah... cool

  • wow...

  • grace brought jeff into the mainstream and got him a bit of commercial fame, but for me and all jeffs fans the sin e recordings are how he should be remembered , you should ve come over

  • exactly.

  • Jeff and his dad were two incredible talents...and both died way too young.

  • grandiose implementation of van morrison classic. Live At Sin-é records will stay my favourite for the rest of my life. rip

  • Five stars isn't anywhere near enough.

  • this is my love song...

  • wish i could have been in sin-e to see jeff, pity its closed now,im always looking for cool places like that whenever i go to ny!

  • because this things i like music.

  • gorgeous

  • why listen to it if you aint gonna respect it you fucking mug,

    fucking amazing song!!
