  • Do someone else than me get that "Its something out there we don't know about" feeling when hearing the intro?

  • This souns like Chris Rea's I Can Hear Your Heartbeat,..at the beginning.

  • from the best of the 80's era and to learn to today's musichians

  • When did he die?

  • @Lstar399 He hasn't, I'm not quite sure who posted his death announcement, But ghosts don't go on tour, and he is coming to Canada in May. Nuff said

  • There is a story based off of this song and it's so eerie and amazing!

  • @OhDestroya this song is based on greek mythology (a)

  • This is REAL music.

  • Too bad he did "Lady in Red". That's all the radio stations will play.

  • try this on the Larne cairain ferry sorry wont work!

  • "We were dead of sleep,

    And all clapp’d under hatches;

Where, with strange and several noises

Of roaring, shrieking, howling, jingling chains,

And more diversity of sounds, all horrible,

    We were awak’d; straightaway at liberty;

Where we, in all her trim, freshly beheld

Our royal, good, and gallant ship"

  • amazing work good stuff the tribute is true, Evee

  • THE GREAT PINO PALLADINO ON BASS , LIKE REMEMBER PAUL YOUNG AND THE AMAZING BASS PLAYING ON HIS SONG'S , WELL IT'S THE SAME DUDE

  • @barrydunne30 Hate to break it but it's not Pino Palladino, it's John Giblin on fretless bass guitar (I have the CD and it says so in the liner notes). This was Chris DeBurgh's first US Top 40 hit in 1983 and got sizeable airplay on American rock radio. This is the Chris DeBurgh I remember.

  • Ta piosenka + "Popiół i Kurz" J.Grzędowicza, to jest to!

  • Anyone else here because of Tom Servo?

  • @FunOnABun1 I'm here because Mike broke into it during Clash of the Titans on rifftrax.com!

  • great lyrics to this song......"reading from a map in the mind" and dancing bones that jabbered and moaned on the water.......but remember to pay the ferryman when u get to the other side!

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO! awesome work you did on this! THANKS!

  • why have i listened to this song 5 times in a row? oh I know why ITS FUCKING KICK-ASS!!!!!

  • I'm 18 years old, and i absolutely love this song! and I love a spaceman came travelling! i wish i was alive in the 80s.... *sigh*

  • 35 people paid the ferryman beofre he got them to the other side

  • I reckon so, too, Lilynick. What a shame music isn't of this ilk isn't around today!!

  • Played this for my daughter who is playing "Escape From Monkey Island 5" :)

  • John ringo brought me here through the book Hells Faire.

  • Chris's best I think!

    Goodnight :)

  • it rocks

  • Won't have to pay the ferryman it will be begging for the souls I all ready have.

  • This song is great at evoking images of some legendary tale or fantasy story. Always liked it. And I loved synth laden rock/pop from this era.

  • Ah, the eighties... A simpler time, where men were men, women were women, and singers didn't need $3 million in auto-tune equipment to still sound terrible and be praised by morons.

  • Top track! Always strain my ears to hear The Tempest quote at the end.

  • I'm not going to pay the ferry man. He is going to take me kicking and screaming.

  • fabulous song but why isn't the original video clip featured with it.? parts of the original clip are featured in the live version on youtube. but I think the whole original clip should be featured here. It is an awesome clip.

  • 34 persons are ferryman

  • this is good i just wish chris de burgh can still be here to sing it at a cocert or something

  • great song

  • love this song it has a great tune to it

  • Cool video, but the song sucks balls.

  • Thumbs up if the MST3K Space Mutiny credits brought you here. o.ob

  • why cant music be like this again

  • It was late at night on the open road; speeding like a man on the run; a lifetime spend preparing for the journey; he is closer now and the search is on; reading from a map in the mind; yes there's that ragged hill and theres the boat on the river.

    And when the rain came down; he heard a wild dog howl;

There were voices in the night, DONT DO IT!

Voices out of sight, DONT DO IT!

Too many MEN HAVE FAILED BEFOREEEEE

    WHATEVER YOU DO!

    Don't pay the ferryman!

    Don't even fix a price!

  • Oh the memories...!

  • ahh the 80s, when i was in my 20s....bring em back I say

  • This song is my childhood, my dad never turned it off :')

I remember him explaining it to me when I was about 6.

I'm 16 now, not heard it since I was about 11.

Might surprise him and get it up on youtube when he gets home from work :')

  • @PopInTheClouds Is this about Charon in Greek Mythology?

  • Incredible fretless line. I think this is John Giblin. Just so solid.

  • better film would be clash of titan for greek myth's

  • dumbass he isnt dead

  • the chorus kinda sounds like hansi kursch of blind guardian singing :P

  • Good song. My 10 year old is very interested in greek mythology right now, so when the subject of the Charon of Hades came up I showed him this.

  • great tune--great voice

    rip chris

  • @manfromsauchie When did he die exactly?

  • chris de burgh is beyond lady in red as kown commonly... dont pat the ferryman... diamond in the dark... last night...fire on the water ... good by to at all ... can not be forgetten

  • This song + Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels = Best. Night. EVER.

  • @ColtonOweekly

Amen brother. One of my Fav songs ever with my fav book series EVER! Im there!!!

  • @ColtonOweekly

I agree! One of my fav songs with my all time fav book series? Im there!

  • Tom Servo brought me here.

  • ΚΡΙΣΤΙΝ ΜΠΡΕΓΚ - ΝΤΟΝΤ ΝΤΟΥ ΙΤ

  • This is Tom Servo's favorite song ever made.

  • anyone else see this in Mr Klowmalski's class?

  • Chris de burgh will always be associated with Lady in red which was his number 1, so people see him as this cheesy 80s singer, which to an extent I would've agreed with, as I don't like that song. But a lot of people don't even know about " Don't pay the Ferryman" or "The Revolution" which are two fantastic songs, and A spaceman came travelling aint too bad either!

  • @LordWedgewood I agree he should not be dismissed for the crime against humanity that was Lady in Red - Patricia the stripper has its moments too.

  • @LordWedgewood or the Spanish train which is in my opinion his best song.!!!

  • the great pino palladino on bass classic

  • I was singing this last year the whole time I was on a ferry in Ireland. We got to the other side. The ferryman got paid.

  • Don't Pay The Oracle, to many men have failed before , Dont pay the Oacle untill she get's you to the other side !

  • Does the Ferryman give refunds?

  • I love this and spanish train b4 lady in red success he had some great songs

  • What is to say Ferryman for slaughter in Syria?

  • Τι εχει να πει ο Ferryman για το Μακελιο στην Συρια;

  • @sweetgirlhardcandy

you have to pay the ferryman once you get to the other side, in greek mythology if you paid before the journey was over than you had to replace charon as the ferryman, this would effectively deny you an afterlife, until you tricked another person into giving you the money that is,

  • don't do it!

  • do you have to pay the ferryman?

  • do you have to pay the ferryman?

  • Yeah, screw the ferryman! Save your coin and take up the oar yourself!

  • I wonder If someone died can I put regular coins,I live in Egypt and we mainly use paper money.

  • I prefer Tom Servo's version of this song.

  • Great song before the smaltz and the MOR came in.

  • Can we go back to the 80's now, pleeeeease??

  • Chris hit #34 in Billboard, 7-2-83. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • What movie is this?

  • like this comment if when you here a song any song you remember something in you!

  • I didn't wait three years for a Chris de Burgh concert so I could miss the encore of Don't Pay the Ferryman because I'm in the concourse talking to my boss about stolen carts! Do you understand me Bubbles?

  • We were watching, "The Clash of the Titans" the other night and there was a scene where they had to pay the Ferryman to take them to where Medusa was. I yelled out, "Don't pay the Ferryman till he gets you to the other side". My kids thought I was nuts. They don't know good music.

  • Best Song of Chris de Burgh...I've seen him singing in Germany

  • i remember when this video 1st played on mtv.those were good days

  • There was another version of this video back in the 80's which incorporated scenes from "Clash of the Titans" (the original) where Harry Hamlin as Perseus fights against demons and Charon the Ferryman....it was awesome.

  • good tune

  • 32 people paid the ferryman too soon...

  • great song from the 80's when mtv was cool.....not crap like today

  • Comment removed

  • before my heavy metal days- but its still pretty tight \m/

  • Ahh, back in the day...mfkr!!!!!!

  • Ουκ αν λάβεις παρά του μη έχοντος

  • *Throws a hoverbot across a theater* It had to be done.

  • Can I get a refund?....LOL

  • And...don´t pay the corrupt politicians! Peace!

  • One awesome song, da 80's music never dies!!!!

  • One of Tom Servo's favorite songs.

  • get the origional video back

  • 29 people paid the ferryman.

  • @sugapieissofly They didnt agree a price and now hes being suied in the small court!

  • put them under his eye lids. so they dont fall out!

  • planetrob555

Great, another pre-pube who cant distinguish between an awesome song and a pile of fecal matter. I'm willing to bet that you are fans of both Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black, who are capable of only producing the latter of the aforementioned options

  • Damn...this is a perfect example of shitty early 80's pop. This song truly sucks musically.

  • @planetrob555 oh you can just go to hell for that one ha ha

  • Maybe Gary, the head mall cop could come to YouTube to see this and it would make up for him missing it in the encore at the concert.

  • earthbound to your treasure sunken heart to the ocean floor

  • When I first heard this song I thought it was saying "oh baby baby" and I thought it was a love song. lol

  • 28 people paid the ferry man

  • @starmooz

    dam make that 29 lol

    and the blody thing sunk

  • What if I pay half now and the other half when I get to the other side? I think that would be more fair.

  • as an alternative writer, I have an admiration for Chris de Burgh.....Spanish train wow

  • If dancing bones are the entertainment on the trip, don't bother getting aboard.

  • online man woman are chatting you can join there benaughtyman.info

  • I am assuming this song is about the Faerie (men), and when you cross over you are expected to pay them so you reach the other side.

  • VERY well done. Excellent editing. Quite possibly better than the original.

  • this song heralded the end of good music forever- the beginning of MTV, the origin of corporate entertainment, the death of punk. Its the worst song ever writen.

  • @geoffhutch And this is the worst comment ever written.

  • this song heralded the end of good music forever- the beginning of MTV, the origin of corporate entertainment, the death of punk.

  • The ferryman will throw 28 people in the river Styx.....

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH AH AH AH!

  • A "weenie rock" classic!

  • Thank you.

    5*****.

    Jennie.

  • I have written this message in hope that my dear friend Milly may read it. I have been trying to locate her, but sadly I’ve had no joy. I know she is a fan of Chris de Burgh so I live in hope that she reads this message and contacts me. Milly previously lived in Folkestone and worked for my mother. I let the best thing that ever happened to me slip through my fingers, even if too much has happened for a relationship to develop, I would also be happy to have her as a friend.

  • You're not the one who goes to a Chris DeBurgh concert and misses the encore of 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' because you're in the lobby on the phone talking about stolen shopping carts!

  • Good song

  • Really great tune and video.

    MTV used to be good.

  • I love creativity tallented souls you all are.My best wishes have a great day.

  • great song and cool video :)

  • So nostalgic, like many of you, introduced to this at a your age by my parents. Also, recently spent some time in Jamaica, Jamaican guys seem to love Lady in Red. Not kidding, I was serenaded by it. Pretty freaking funny.

  • Thumbs up if Mystery Science Theater 3000 brought you here.

  • Got a $400 speeding ticket listening to this song going home one night!

  • $400? That's big coin exhiledtonowhere. How fast were you going?

  • @Gravida12 98 in 60 but it was a construction zone so fines were doubled. Oh well it could have been worse. I had a 96 RX7 and had been driving over 120 earlier in the trip.

  • It's so sad when family do not agree, or understand. Pennies were always placed on the eyes to keep them closed, not as payment to the Ferryman.

  • @kizzywhizz That is indeed the practical purpose of the pennies (by the way, the old UK penny was about the size of a us silver dollar) but Englishmen being a superstitious lot (especially the sailors), they never miss the chance to add a little macabre theater whenever they can.

  • Ne fizess a révésznek! amig nem érsz át. Ez a cím.

  • "A lifetime spent preparing for the journey"

  • crap... i paid the ferryman... wish I'd seen this

  • @jasonrit If you are in the UK, call Trading Standards and get your money back

  • Never heard this before, now I am hooked on it.

  • keeps stopin+starting shit video but top song

  • @chey715 or you have a shit computer works fine for me

  • @chey715 I agree, it's a great song and this video is very dramatic. Why don't you try lowering the default quality of 360P down to 240P. It may help if your connection or processor is too slow to enjoy it. Enjoy!

  • My pap passed not long ago, I put 2 liberty silver dollars in his hand to pay his way. My family went nuts when i tried to put them on his eye's.

  • @bill2blue actually, ancient greeks were putting a coin between the lips of the dead...not on his eyes... Just for the history.

  • @djyasimo And go back about 400 years before that the ancient Egyptians put them on the eyes of the dead, Oldest known remains found to date were in a tomb in Egypt and had coins over the eyes!!

  • @bill2blue soooo funny!

  • Thanks for sharing this...hadn't thought of this song in years

  • "Beware that hooded old man at the rudder..."

  • robot roll call

  • @arryarrfiddledeedee Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, Croooow! Space Mutiny for you too?

  • @SnjperWulf Hey, yeah! Funny how MST3K can turn me into a Chris de Burgh fan.

  • @arryarrfiddledeedee lol Seen it a dozen times and never thought to look up the song. First time I hear it and I love it. Good to meet another Mstie too. How long you been a fan?

  • @SnjperWulf Quite a while. I first caught it when SciFi did some reruns, but I never really watched it on TV. (By the time I was old enough to actually get the humor, it had been cancelled) Now I'm a big fan thanks to Netflix, and before that I just found episodes roaming around the internet.

  • @arryarrfiddledeedee Well, I started watching shortly after Mike took over. Hooked till this day. It's the best show mankind has ever made. Goblinxx1's channel has the vast majority of episodes from both Joel and Mike in playlists. Do you know about Film Crew, RiffTrax, and Cinematic Titanic?

  • @SnjperWulf Indeed, but I never really got around to watching any of them aside from a few Rifftrax episodes. They were still pretty enjoyable.

  • I posted in another Don't Pay the Ferryman video about the Scythian mythology of how if the valiant fought the ferryman they would return from whatever the Scythian concept of Hades was. There is a second Scythian legend...a king, the Slavic equivalent of Thor (Perun) is based on, his wife was kidnapped by the ferryman and he and his Sarmatian cousins laid waste to Hades to bring her back they burned the ferryman's ships for this their god smiled on them

  • Chris De Burgh is definatley still alive and kicking!!!

  • Chris De Burgh is definatley NOT dead!!!

  • evil bastard everyone has to pay you end up in llimbo if ya dont

  • this good! R.I.P Chris de Burgh

  • @davidaffa Wow. Didn't know he had passed. Great song...

  • @davidaffa CHRIS DE BURGH IS NOT DEAD!!!

  • This song deserves a whole subsection in the dictionary definition of 'uncool'.

    Horrible.

  • Ok.

  • Now it has me wondering it the audio is backwards on this one or the others. Or did the reverse the audio on this one on purpose because it is a new video?

At :18 you can hear the guitar go right to left. On the others it goes left to right. the rest is backwards too but this is the easiest place to spot it.

  • The Ferry Man In Greek Mythology Was Hades Right Hand Man That Would Take People Across The River Styx Witch Was The Crossing Of Death And Life It Was Rumored That If Coins Were Not Put In The Mouth Or On The Eyes One's Soul Wouldn't Pass Through

  • You didn't put the coins on the eyes of the dead to pay the ferryman Charon, you actually placed it in the mouth, it was called Charon's Obol

  • @ROOROOZODIAC it was under the tongue :)

  • In high school I thought this song / video was over the top bad...and as an adult I know that it is over the top bad!

  • In high school I thought this song and video was over the top bad...and as an adult I know that it is over the top bad!

  • @RResing19 How do you even make a song and its video over-the-top?
