@barrydunne30 Hate to break it but it's not Pino Palladino, it's John Giblin on fretless bass guitar (I have the CD and it says so in the liner notes). This was Chris DeBurgh's first US Top 40 hit in 1983 and got sizeable airplay on American rock radio. This is the Chris DeBurgh I remember.
great lyrics to this song......"reading from a map in the mind" and dancing bones that jabbered and moaned on the water.......but remember to pay the ferryman when u get to the other side!
Ah, the eighties... A simpler time, where men were men, women were women, and singers didn't need $3 million in auto-tune equipment to still sound terrible and be praised by morons.
fabulous song but why isn't the original video clip featured with it.? parts of the original clip are featured in the live version on youtube. but I think the whole original clip should be featured here. It is an awesome clip.
It was late at night on the open road; speeding like a man on the run; a lifetime spend preparing for the journey; he is closer now and the search is on; reading from a map in the mind; yes there's that ragged hill and theres the boat on the river.
And when the rain came down; he heard a wild dog howl;
chris de burgh is beyond lady in red as kown commonly... dont pat the ferryman... diamond in the dark... last night...fire on the water ... good by to at all ... can not be forgetten
Chris de burgh will always be associated with Lady in red which was his number 1, so people see him as this cheesy 80s singer, which to an extent I would've agreed with, as I don't like that song. But a lot of people don't even know about " Don't pay the Ferryman" or "The Revolution" which are two fantastic songs, and A spaceman came travelling aint too bad either!
you have to pay the ferryman once you get to the other side, in greek mythology if you paid before the journey was over than you had to replace charon as the ferryman, this would effectively deny you an afterlife, until you tricked another person into giving you the money that is,
I didn't wait three years for a Chris de Burgh concert so I could miss the encore of Don't Pay the Ferryman because I'm in the concourse talking to my boss about stolen carts! Do you understand me Bubbles?
We were watching, "The Clash of the Titans" the other night and there was a scene where they had to pay the Ferryman to take them to where Medusa was. I yelled out, "Don't pay the Ferryman till he gets you to the other side". My kids thought I was nuts. They don't know good music.
There was another version of this video back in the 80's which incorporated scenes from "Clash of the Titans" (the original) where Harry Hamlin as Perseus fights against demons and Charon the Ferryman....it was awesome.
Great, another pre-pube who cant distinguish between an awesome song and a pile of fecal matter. I'm willing to bet that you are fans of both Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black, who are capable of only producing the latter of the aforementioned options
this song heralded the end of good music forever- the beginning of MTV, the origin of corporate entertainment, the death of punk. Its the worst song ever writen.
I have written this message in hope that my dear friend Milly may read it. I have been trying to locate her, but sadly I’ve had no joy. I know she is a fan of Chris de Burgh so I live in hope that she reads this message and contacts me. Milly previously lived in Folkestone and worked for my mother. I let the best thing that ever happened to me slip through my fingers, even if too much has happened for a relationship to develop, I would also be happy to have her as a friend.

You're not the one who goes to a Chris DeBurgh concert and misses the encore of 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' because you're in the lobby on the phone talking about stolen shopping carts!
So nostalgic, like many of you, introduced to this at a your age by my parents. Also, recently spent some time in Jamaica, Jamaican guys seem to love Lady in Red. Not kidding, I was serenaded by it. Pretty freaking funny.
@Gravida12 98 in 60 but it was a construction zone so fines were doubled. Oh well it could have been worse. I had a 96 RX7 and had been driving over 120 earlier in the trip.
@kizzywhizz That is indeed the practical purpose of the pennies (by the way, the old UK penny was about the size of a us silver dollar) but Englishmen being a superstitious lot (especially the sailors), they never miss the chance to add a little macabre theater whenever they can.
@chey715 I agree, it's a great song and this video is very dramatic. Why don't you try lowering the default quality of 360P down to 240P. It may help if your connection or processor is too slow to enjoy it. Enjoy!
My pap passed not long ago, I put 2 liberty silver silver dollars in his hand to pay his way. My family went nuts when i tried to put them on his eye's.
@djyasimo And go back about 400 years before that the ancient Egyptians put them on the eyes of the dead, Oldest known remains found to date were in a tomb in Egypt and had coins over the eyes!!
@arryarrfiddledeedee lol Seen it a dozen times and never thought to look up the song. First time I hear it and I love it. Good to meet another Mstie too. How long you been a fan?
@SnjperWulf Quite a while. I first caught it when SciFi did some reruns, but I never really watched it on TV. (By the time I was old enough to actually get the humor, it had been cancelled) Now I'm a big fan thanks to Netflix, and before that I just found episodes roaming around the internet.
@arryarrfiddledeedee Well, I started watching shortly after Mike took over. Hooked till this day. It's the best show mankind has ever made. Goblinxx1's channel has the vast majority of episodes from both Joel and Mike in playlists. Do you know about Film Crew, RiffTrax, and Cinematic Titanic?
I posted in another Don't Pay the Ferryman video about the Scythian mythology of how if the valiant fought the ferryman they would return from whatever the Scythian concept of Hades was. There is a second Scythian legend...a king, the Slavic equivalent of Thor (Perun) is based on, his wife was kidnapped by the ferryman and he and his Sarmatian cousins laid waste to Hades to bring her back they burned the ferryman's ships for this their god smiled on them
Now it has me wondering it the audio is backwards on this one or the others. Or did the reverse the audio on this one on purpose because it is a new video?
At :18 you can hear the guitar go right to left. On the others it goes left to right. the rest is backwards too but this is the easiest place to spot it.
The Ferry Man In Greek Mythology Was Hades Right Hand Man That Would Take People Across The River Styx Witch Was The Crossing Of Death And Life It Was Rumored That If Coins Were Not Put In The Mouth Or On The Eyes One's Soul Wouldn't Pass Through
Do someone else than me get that "Its something out there we don't know about" feeling when hearing the intro?

And all clapp’d under hatches;
Where, with strange and several noises
Of roaring, shrieking, howling, jingling chains,
And more diversity of sounds, all horrible,
We were awak’d; straightaway at liberty;
Where we, in all her trim, freshly beheld
Our royal, good, and gallant ship"

You didn't put the coins on the eyes of the dead to pay the ferryman Charon, you actually placed it in the mouth, it was called Charon's Obol
