  • Mmmm... guy ritchie remakes suggestions - long good Friday and lavender hill mob .

Agree stallone f***ed a good flim up as only he can.

  • Guy Ritchie should have been the one to remake Get carter if at all a remake had been made. Stallone went ahead and F*cked it up !! so i guess the chances for a remake look bleak.

Still we do have ritchie to look forward to for some brit gangster movies post his sherlock phase.

  • The hit man who shoots him is sat in the train carriage smoking @ about 44 seconds

  • Ooops. Me mix up me Harold and me Roy. Harold USA, still alive, Roy UK, RIP. Harold does the ambient stuff.

  • I admit it's a good theme, but look, folks, it's straight out of the John Barry playbook: ostinato and main melody played on an exotic sounding instrument. Just like the Ipcress File. Or the theme from the Persuaders.

  • @BegoneJonah Echo that. I listened to a Budd ambient piece on the radio, remembered he'd done a Brit movie and searched for Ipcress File. Forgotten that it was J Barry but similar feel. Budd's more jazzy.

  • If only train travel were as lovely today.

  • gan on roy

  • British Rail in the old days. Pullman carridge and everything. Mermories.

  • I'm not a big fan of british crime films but this movie is great!

  • One of the all time most memorable film themes. Get Carter was a classic British gangster movie and Jack Carter was one of Michael Caine's best performances. The final chords to the theme are the most haunting.

  • The strum at 35 seconds is just perfect.

  • Super cool.

  • One of the best film theme tunes ever

  • Guy Ritchie plays this at night, and cries himself to sleep :-)

  • 02:06 purple dexies smarties, to keep him going.

  • I actually had Roy as a celebrity fare in the Seventies. Nice guy. RIP.

  • The next time I leave Kings Cross on the train I'm going to play this song!

  • Love what happens @ 2:35

  • A fantastic haunting theme that makes my spine tingle

Get Carter is a classic movie

  • Haunting theme, superb musicianship, the solo of Herbie Hancock quality. Ted Lewis's novel is not to be missed. He knew crime and criminals, rather than having an educated guess like Raymond Chandler. A superb writer. Brit Noir pioneer supreme. Roy Budd's solo on this very Herbie-ish. Obsessive's info: the guy in the corner of the carriage plays a very important role at end of this awesome movie...

  • @mjramsden13 ...I think I know who you mean :)

  • superb track and film.

  • "your a big man..." i love it

  • I have had this theme tune stuck in my head for about 13 years now, ever since I first saw it!

  • brings me back to 70's in Boston - great post !

  • @Hunsruck That would be Boston in the North east, yeah?

  • A great film and it would be appropriate if the cunt got his come uppance at the end, eh?!

  • one of the best and most striking film sountracks of all time. You only have to hear the first two notes and you know what film it is. Fantasmagorical superamos31

  • If he got caught by the ticket collector in the first class compartment without a proper ticket he would have just knifed the ticket collector to death and the ticket collector would have said 'I only asked because I am doing my job', to which he would have said ' I KNOW you are just doing your job!'. I KNOW!'

  • I gotta be honest.. . .It needs more cowbell!!!

  • Bit of a piss take or artistic licence at the start, plays the piano and prungs it, even if he should have been been playing the harpsicord before prunging the piano's strings on its frame. Ah well, but the visual effect is perfect.

  • Makes my hair stand up watching this.

  • A masterclass on composing music for film.

  • awesome movie theme. would love the soundtrack

  • The best caine was superb in this.

  • how effective the bongos are in that track! not heard often enough now.

  • Love this tune, always have

  • pure class film and tune.

  • An awesome theme and a worthy actor set the scene so well.

  • Awesome. I love it when Mr Budd swivels on his chair and cracks out a solo at 2:37 like he had been playing that all day.

  • yay= class 55 deltic at 2.13

  • The remake was a TRAVESTY. Get Carter (1970) is superb, as is this theme by Roy Budd.

  • @radioianj I agree. I think all remakes are woeful. It's the same with The Italian Job. The original was a masterpiece, the remake was insipid, feeble, pathetic & pointless.

  • @whitbyjet65 I will give the remake of the Italian Job a miss then.

  • @alanheath there was no 'you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off' in the script of the remake. That is why it was a pants remake.

  • Roy Budd, the English Lalo Schifrin - delivering big-time. Words can't quite grasp the sublimity of this theme. The version with the train/station effects 'put back in' is hair-raising. Caine's finest hour in a great film. Budd encapsulates the excitement, meanness and hard attitude of 'Jack in a place he spent a lot of time and effort to get away from'/ no nonsense real 'hard bloke sorting things out' atmosphere in the grooviest of ways.

  • I love theme and I really love the movie.

  • Whats the stuff he sticks up his nose? Always wondered that.

  • @kmp3000 I may be wrong, but I assumed he was sniffing the fumes from a jar of glue. A cheap, common and very dangerous way to get high.

  • @quirpco I'm pretty sure it's just medicine. You can see he also takes a pill before his meal.

  • @quirpco looks more like nose drops. nasal decongesters used to come in little brown bottles like that

  • @mrspivvy

Olbas oil still does- I don't know about any others.

  • Do you know what I do? Do you know who I am ?

  • the bloke smoking a fag in the train, I think he shot carter.........

  • @starstruckone I am pretty sure it was him. This suggests that Carter was being followed up from London - although Fletcher did say he did not want him to go. I don't quite follow why Kinnear asks if he knows what Carter looked like.

(I am glad you wrote this as it is my policy not to reveal things that happen towards the end in a film!!! )

  • at 2.07 is that didcot power station? it looks like it

  • @mrspivvy No, it's not Didcot. The train is going from Kings X to Newcastle so it'll be somewhere "up North"

  • @mrspivvy Little Barford Power station (in its coal fired days)

between Sandy & St Neots, about 9 miles south of Huntingdon but it looks different now.

  • The scene of the shoot out on the ferry landing in Get Carter always brings back fond childhood memories for me. I grew up in that area and I remember me and my mate throwing stones at turds floating down the Tyne, seeing who could score the most direct hits. That was before the Tyne got cleaned up a bit. Golden days!

  • I would put Get Carter just behind The Long Good Friday as the Best British Gangster Film but a great film in it's own right and in my opinion Caine's best film performance.

  • Best music score ever, best British film EVER.

  • Roy Budd was born in 1947. Although some biographies say Budd started playing aged four, he was two and a half years old when he started picking out tunes on the piano the morning after a Christmas party (verified by Roy's brother).

He scored over 20 movies...From Soldier Blue to Who Dares Wins but he is most remembered for Get Carter......Sadly he died at the age of 46 in 1993, due to a brain haemorrhage

  • how dare they even attempt to remake this 70's classic.

  • great stuff ... thanks!!

  • shadowxxxhome- the J on his ring stood for jacko

  • Freeking classic movie and song. Roy Budd sets the perfect mood to this classic British gangster movie, love how cold, eeire and gloomy everything looks and feels.

  • do you know a man called albert swift ?

oh. dont miss the start of the song on my account."

  • The One and Only.

  • Feckin classic stuff!

  • Great film and great theme,

Note... The bloke sat down having a smoke as the train passes BOCM in Selby is the same fella thats shoots Carter on Blyth Staithes Beach !

  • but what did the J on the fella's ring (in the film) stand for?

  • the J stood for jacko

  • @womeruk You're spot on, in addition Eric Paice loses a shoe on the beach, then in the next shot is wearing both shoes! PS - i'm not sure its Blyth Staithes beach, but one furthur down the coast.

  • @womeruk, don't spoil it!

  • This is splendid.

This theme was theme music of the FM program called `AITSU` in Japan.

The program was a very impressive program.

I could hear this music and I felt nostalgia.

    Thank you.

  • Those bars in the beginning are epic, love the eerie mood he added with the processing effects.

  • For some reason the woman sitting next to Michael Caine reminds me of Joanna Lumley as an old woman.

  • I'm not a big fan of British crime films but this one is great! avoid the remake. it sucks!

  • i like the theme and The Film..... and i like Michael caine.....

  • classic.

  • This has to be the 'definitive' British Gangster film of its time. I still love the film and its great to see that both the film, and the late author, Ted Lewis (who wrote the novel 'Jack's Return Home in 1970, on which it is based) have been actually recognised.

  • i agree, not to mention the soundtrack aswell,

  • @Blatch643

Cool---I found this song on a complilation of movie themes some years and enjoyed it right away--I love that bassline---went out a bought a compilation of Roy Budd's movie themes called BUDDISM, which had some great funky themes on it---worth getting if you love '70's movie themes--only problem with this tune is that it's a little too short for me---plus I like jazz.

  • Now how about a GTA Game based like GTA but based on Get Carter in the UK. now that would sell millions, top clip :)

  • They already did a GTA game based on Get Carter. It was the extension to GTA 1 - GTA London.

  • how the hell do you come up with music like that! what a great tune

  • fantastic clip..what is budd's performance from..

  • Actually the whole Budd soundtrack is excellent. This film was the first major film to be made in Newcastle.

  • Classic Caine Boss Budd

  • Classic Caine Boss Budd

  • Thrilling Video.. really cool

  • Fantastic haunting theme tune, one of the all time greats...

  • I sometimes say to my daughter: "Be good: and don't trust boys!" A classic line from a gritty film. The ending is almost unbearable.

  • If only Jack knew his killer was sat in the same compartment. Excellent film from start to finish.

  • Yeah. This is one of mine favorite movies. Finale is good and realistic. In real life happy end are really rare. Especialy if you badass. I hate remake with Sly

  • @marchrabbit85 MAYBE THE BAD GUY IN ME ALWAYS WANTED TO SHOUT JACK LOOK OUT! AND KILL THE HITMAN MYSELF,that was when i was 12 im older now.the hitman wouldnt get the chance now ha h aTAKE CARE

  • @marchrabbit85 40 years since this was made. mighty movie. watched it on the plane to singapore a couple of months ago. absolutely brilliant film.

  • @marchrabbit85 I hated the remake too, but loved the original.

  • I love the Budd sound.

  • One of the greatest theme tunes ever from the best British film ever made.

  • The three keyboard instruments are a grand piano (with lots of reverb and very little direct sound), an acoustic harpsichord with reverb added and a red Wurlitzer EP-200 electric piano. I remember reading that the film's budget only extended to three musicians; Budd, a percussionist and a bass player. I thought I could hear an analogue drum machine at one point (Ace Tone?) but perhaps not.

  • Ah yes, the legendary Wurlitzer EP200

  • i heard this song years ago, and i didnt know what it was, and i really wanted to listen to it, and finally i get to hear it again today!

  • where can i get this masterpiece????

  • Not too sure what you mean? Score music or just the track itself? If you do want this piece, just buy the soundtrack for the film.

The (remastered?) soundtrack for Get Carter is amazingly produced with some fantastic songs and movie moments. The songs sum up the period beautifully with performances (like in the pub scene) and it includes even (slingshotting from the 60's I believe) psychadelic and dreamy songs. Probably one of the best soundtracks around ever.

    Roy Budd = Genius

  • I just love it when he flays the piano strings for a plucked effect.

    Genius, No other words.

  • roy budd fucking owns

  • The ultimate in British cool, both the film and the theme tune, Caine was at his best in this.

  • Brilliant film and brilliant soundtrack.

  • Real movie magic.

  • Classic theme tune from a classic composer, pure genius.

  • WOW! He played the theme live!! You wont find to me people in music that can look at a seen and play it out live!!

  • This was also used on the c4 Brian Clough documentary and complemented the era suberbly.Magnificent tune.

  • fuckin' classic

  • How cool it is!

When I was highschool student, I was always listening this music which was main theme of a radio program in Japan.

I'm very happy to visit this site. Thanks a lot.

  • I love so much Roy Budd, that i use two of his tunes for my short movie Jours sans amis 2 ( ... Hawaï ) and the trailer

  • Many THANKS! Perfect vid, perfect tune.

Do like this one very much. Made my day! Thx.

  • fantastic theme to with a fantastic film!!!! love micheal caines fantastic acting!!

  • how fantasical!

  • Great thanks!

  • Best part of the film (apart from the theme) is Jack Carter throwing Alf Roberts from the now demolished Trinty Square car park in Gateshead. "I hope you can fly" I don't think we are going to get our fee on this one..." Classic!

  • It's still there as far as i can see!

  • Smokin fags on a train, those were the days

  • my favourite film, always will be.

  • jack carter's one of the badest badasses

  • so classy

  • The best soundtrack to a film ever heard. Including On the Warterfront.

  • two bars in and everyone of a certain age knows EXACTLY which film this comes from

  • very much one of the greatests.

  • Wonderful just wonderful.

  • Pretty good. Guess that counts as a music video.

  • Timeless! Still to this day modern chill out, nu-jazz, electronica-jazz productions are heavily inspired by Roy Budd's classic. to say NOTHING of David Holmes (Ocean's 11/12/13). Fantastic!

  • love this song. its so distinctive!

  • A perfect fusion of music and film.

  • Double awsome

  • Awesome!!! no words to describe it!

  • No "Ifs or Buts" the best British gangster film of all time and great music.

  • Pure genius Roy Budd!

  • Best british gangster film by miles and the best theme bar non.

Watched it many times and I might just put it on in a minute.

  • You are indeed a radical cucumber sire...Roy Budd is a bloody genius innit...That has got to be one of the finest openings to a movie ever...I am a long time Buddist x Gaz

  • REG NEVITT, BLOKE IN COFFIN !

  • Get Carter Is One Best Film And Tht One The Best Intro To A Film

  • When the BASS kicks in......oh man that cooks!!!!!!!

  • Yeah!

  • the best british gangster film by miles.

  • Cool as foook!

  • classic film and theme.

  • the tune is gangster. amaizing

  • Chilling!

  • It's Jeff Clyne, who fans of the Canterbury scene will know played with Ian Carr's Nucleus and Gary Boyle's Isotope among others.

  • I know the guy who plays the bass on this.

  • Who was it? Herb Flowers?

  • Anybody got a TV or live clips of this superb musician playing with his jazz trio ? It would be great to see more of Roy on YouTube

  • My first ship was the ESSO HIBERNIA shown in background of gunfight at the Docks .

My son is now an avid fan of the film - what a momento .

    Classic British stuff .

  • If you play along with the opening credits, as posted by Moon878, they're a semi-tone higher than this.

    Anyone explain that?

  • Thanks for those notes, SpringerSix...just wasted a few hours on them! Playing them up the neck sounds good, too.

The line I've always liked from the film is "I don't believe I can allow you to do that" Not so good in print, maybe, but great with Carter's menace. I only dare say it to my cat when she's about to jump on the table.

Nice to see a Deltic at 2:15

  • correction on tunnel length its about a 1000 yds long sorry

  • the train is seen passing under the old A1 road bridge before it was rebuilt in 1972 the train then passes through grantham station the next shot is the train about to enter peascliffe tunnel and seconds later it leaves the same tunnel not bad speed the tunnel is about 1700 yds long the film itself is a classic

  • @tapper55013

Now that's a Big Anaorak your wearing there fellow.......

  • Brilliant. Three 'pianos', not keyboards stacked.

Got the cd, dvd etc, but its one of the only films that I can watch time and time again without analysing it to death.

See also Hitman, but not the Stallone version, LOL

  • ive never seen the film but the tune is ace

  • You must watch the Film it is really awesome !!

  • Without Roy Budds sound, would Get Carter have worked.

Of course? All involved here are magic. Like writing a poem. Most are shit, but sometimes - the art comes. From within.
