Great post - Darius Rucker's rendition is absolutely the best version, though Bruce Arnold's is the classic. Heard it on release on the East Coast (Cousin Brucie & WABC) as I was coming back from Nam. Great memories! Thanks for doing this.
I have loved this song from day one. I dedicated it back in 1993 to my honey Joe, God rest his soul. I looked at his pretty face and fell in love every time, just like the song. Hootie does it really just at good as Orpheus. Great song, brings back memories.
During the 1980s, I attended a Bonnie Rait concert. She announced that Southside Johney had stopped by to say hello, but she insisted that he stay to play harmonica on a song. Unfortunately, headliners today usually perform scripted concerts with neither surprises nor guest performers. The fact that Hootie invites B Arnold to appear at their concerts and sing with them shows real class.
I was lucky enough to see Orpheus in person when I went to college in Boston in 1969. I had their albumn too...my poor roomate...musta' heard it 1000 times...lol
i know stephen martin of the original orpheus.....the original is far better than this could ever hope to be. ive seen it played at open mics by some of the band members...it was great
this is going to sound weird i like this song but the part of the second verse where he says''i look at your pretty face'' that little verse i really like that part the most ,,,great song
There are over a dozen covers of my song Can't Find the Time. I like Hootie's the best. They invite me to sing it with them when they tour the west coast.
I assume your lyrics are to Hootie's version. There are errors. He's saying "baby you're wrong" not "maybe you're wrong." Also "Nightgowns with regal lace." not "real lace."
HELLO TRADERFLIES, What can I say? You've spliced these songs seamlessly! Well done. Both versions are beautiful, but I wish you've started it with the original Orpheus version then followed by Hootie. Don't fret, you've still done a great job. Care to dance? (hehehe...)
My girlfriend introduced me to this song, and we use to sing it in the car together. One morning she started going ba da da da da. lol. Good memories. I miss her... ): Wish things were different. This is a decent song... Makes me sad and think about her...
@erwi2906 well that's fine I'm happy for her! I also am not worried! Many men may go where I have already been! Speaking of which we made love everyday for the entire time that we were together without protection! And I just found the time to tell you! Enjoy!!! LOL and stay out of people's business!!! (:

Darius sings "Ba da ba..." instead of the correct "Ba da da..." The reason for this is because Hootie went off the 1968 sheet music provided by the band's notorious and very dishonest "Producer" and publisher, Alan Lorber. Despite the fact that Orpheus leader and songwriter, Bruce Arnold, had warned people away from the consumer sheet music due to it's incorrect lyrics and simplified chords, Lorber apparently "didn't get the memo" and as a result Hootie sings it the way it was printed in '68.
I was there in Boston during this time with Orpheus. the Beacon Street Union, Phulf, and The Joe Vando Band. This was great stuff. It is a tribute that Hootie covered this tune.
Thanks for posting this awesome song by both groups!! I love both versions. I agree it should have been a bigger hit. I don't think that it was ever played in the part of the country that I lived in the late 60's (Western Nebraska). I wish that it would have been played around here.
Song was released in the 60s by Orpheus, almost a beach tune. I love Darius and the whole group. This remake was great. This SC boys can do anything. I certainly have Carolina Pride in these guys. They are so well grounded and are truly great guys. Thanks for posting

Steve Martin was a member of Orpheus for the fourth album, which was not good. He was a content contributor for the first three albums.

I've heard this great song(Orpheus) a million times on the radio growing up. I can't believe it wasn't even a top forty hit?
All the airplay that it gets on classic oldies radio, you would think it was a smash?
Kind of strange. Great tune.
