Used to go to Philly during the summers growing up and remember the Action News theme, but haven't been able to make it back for a few years. Do they still do that song?
They have re-mastered this song so many times, but I can still remember when they tried to change it for a week in the 90's and got so much mail, they had no choice but to change it back Hopefully, they keep it around forever!
This has GOT to be the best news close of all time... 30 straight seconds or so of a woman out grabbing a smoke as the credits roll over her... lol... AWESOME!
Yes, the wood blocks are really only able to be heard when they let the long closing play - which isn't too often anymore. Until the late 90's the blocks were prominent in the opening, too.
I love Sarah Bloomquist! Erica is a cutee too, Cecily is mega sexy, and Karen Rogers is hot stuff too. Action News sure does know how to hire the good ones! =)
When did they stop using "from 6ABC this has been Action News"? I notice they say from Channel 6 again like WABC went back to saying Channel 7 (instead of ABC 7) Eyewitness News.

"From Channel Six, This has been Action News--
the most watched news program in the Delaware Valley. When you see news happen, call the Action News Tipline toll free, at (866)-N-E-W-S-S-I-X call one of Action News regional bureaus in the Lehigh Vally, Trenton, Wilmingtonor the Jersey Shore.'
"true", after awhile the action news theme kinda grows on ya.. even though it's been the same since 1970!! I heard the station changed the theme for a few days, and had to change it back to the old one! people complained...they didn't want it changed!!
I think Ms. Grow's expression is typical of a person who has been at a DMA 4 station for a short period of time. Why risk rocking the boat? It could also be that she thought it funny, but was pressed for time in the shows closing. Third, this really isn't her team and she might have chimed in more on the weekend morning show. All in all she is the cutest when compared to Jessica Borg and Erin O'Hearn. She does not have that arrogant "I'm hot and I know it" attitude.
Even ol' man Jim Gardner has let his hair down at WPVI in recent years.
Once known as a stuffy, stentorian announcer, he's jumped into the on-set joking with both feet. Philadelphia Magazine claimed he would sometimes fart when Dave Roberts tries to do the weather in order to make Roberts crack up!
According to her WPVI bio, Erica grew up in the area. However, Erica has only been at WPVI since January 2007 and hasn't fully settled in yet.
So, wait, is Jim Gardner the voiceover guy? Those are all *live* VOs? That would make this guy one of the last live^ staff announcers on local news, no? ^Live as opposed to on tape, not as opposed to dead, rofl.
No, Jim Gardner is the 6PM & 11PM weekday anchor for WPVI, and as the cornerstone of their news department, is one of two people who usually anchor alone at Channel 6, rather than a two-anchor team as on their other shows.
Weekend anchor (and sub) Rob Jennings also often anchors alone.
Gardner is considered an institution in Philly, having anchored at Channel 6 since 1976.
Erica Grow was still somewhat new at the station at this time, and on this broadcast she was filling in (her normal shift weekend mornings). So its kinda understandable she had little chemistry with Rick & Sarah. She has since improved greatly, and infact I have a video on my account inwhich she does a eagles cheer at the close of a broadcast.
Yeah I still can't figure out why the lady on the end (Erica Grow) didn't add to the banter right there. The way she was acting, seemingly forcing that smile, it seemed as if she were told NOT to banter. Or, maybe she is simply incapable of thinking on the fly, which shouldn't earn you a job at a major-market station. Well...an exception can be made if you're gorgeous, and she most certainly is that. Lordy.

wood blocks i thought they were bongos?
DartsRme312 2 years ago
On the 70s version they were bongos, but when they re-recorded it in the 90s, thewy switched to woodblocks.

The theme song "Move Closer To Your World" was also used at WMAL-TV 7 in Washington, DC in the 70's. It is now known as WJLA-TV (ABC 7)
2542ca 3 years ago
It was also on WKBW in Buffalo, NY back in the 70s. I don't know but they may still use it.
Tazz77 2 years ago
Si. They do. It doesn't fit as well with them as it does with WPVI tho.

I didn't really like it as well when they said "from 6ABC". Channel 6 sounds far better.

you know what...jim gardner on the 6 o'clock close says...World News Tonight is Next on Channel 6....so...i guess that evens it out lol

Did I hear some wood blocks?

Why do people type out the lyrics from the video? Its so pointless. Comment don't put the script up.
But other wise MCTYW is amazing. If they change it the station will go up in flames, riots will ensue and Philly will be no more.

Anita is an anchor and health reporter at WUSA*9 (CBS station) in Washington, D.C.

Aw I miss her. She will be hard to replace. And they still haven't gotten a new health reporter yet.

her name is Ali Goreman. She's no Anita Brickman but she's on her way to becoming a friendly face on their news team.

Rick Williams (the anchor on the left) is widely-known as an on-air joker - also, he's well-known for making HORRIBLE puns on-air!
For example - on a story about cats, he once said, "we're not kitten" (kidding)
