The most important thing for me was to understand that the reason I could not float was because when tense or prepared for exercise, your muscles become dense/contracted ready to pounce and this higher density makes you sink. Now, I can't sink- my problem is getting down to swim under water.
I am 36 and I learnt swimming about 12 weeks back........I underwent an adult course where there just 2 of us adults..classes 4-9 were the most difficult as i started regressing a bit..but by 11 I was able to do 5 laps (with stops at the end) and I went for a 2 week break when I was back I did 3 laps in a row and did 20..my class stopped after that.by the time I was swimming for the 18th time..I was swimming about 50 laps..which I do now..there is an initial mental block when u start late.do it

I tried to learn swimming at the age of about 11 in a well as I was in a village in India but without success (due to fear of drowning after first attempt at it)
I started learning swimming 2 classes ago and due to my ability to hold breath for about 70 seconds under water, i started belly floating and then flapping my arms and legs. Now, in just 2 classes and 5 days later, I can swim one half lap.
I can't yet bring my face up to take air in, but I'll get there pretty soon.
When I was a kid the idiot swimming instructor said, "The easiest way to learn how to swim is just throwing the kid in the deep end and he'll figure it out..." After I wee-wee'd in the the pool in terror, he started teaching me with the kickboard.
- - Now if he wanted to really f*** her up he could do what I used to do at camp... swimming real low, coming up behind kids and pulling them down by their legs... muhahahahahahahah...
this is more common that ppl think. 1. stick with it. 2. stick with it. #. dont stop! fear of water will hold ppl back from having a great life. just like flying or any other thing.
hi, i am a new learner and trying to learn it by myself mostly looking at the video tutorials. I've started with free style. Its been almost one month but still i have problem breathing. In single go holding my breath i can swim so long i can hold. When ever i try to breath i get drowned. Kindly do guide me in this regard. Thanks
nice to see this. i took lessons 20 plus years ago and am attempting it again. funny how old fears can crop up again. a good patient instructor is key. wish me luck!!!!
I'm 50. I just stopped cycling because its too dangerous in England- the establishment are trying to kill cyclists, because they don't pay any tax.
I could not float nor go underwater. Lying on my back in water or going into deep water terrified me. I took adult lessons where I was the worst of 6 students. A few simple explanations and 10 lessons later I can swim a length in front crawl whilst breathing. I can float on back or front and tread water.
as soon as i learned how to hold my breath under water (took 5 minutes of trial and error) i've been swimming like a fish ever since. i can't imaging being afraid of it, but then again most people can't imagine my fear of hunny buckets...
I just joined the local gym with the intention of getting back into the pool after over 25 years. Back then I could swim a mile without a problem with my head underwater. Now I'm afraid again, which is why I'm watching these. It's gratifying to see someone who is as afraid as I am make so much progress in a short period!
What a great video and program! I am a wsi certified swim instructor and am continuously shocked at the number of adults that have a phobia of this, but how awesome it is to help them conquer!
To those who have commented below about similar fears or desires to learn to swim-PLEASE consult a professional. Learning to swim is easier than you think but is not a "do it yourself" kind of task! :)
I'm 30 and i just started to swim,i have like 1 month, the thing is just to dont be afraid to the water,be confident and realize that just not going to die unless you go in the deep of course, start in the less deep and then progress little by little and also don't be ashamed with what people going to say maybe making fun of you cause you are to old but wtf the thing is that you learn or not.
i'm 20 and i have nearly the same problem as Jill does. Lately i've been going to the swimming pool, trying to wean myself off of floating noodles. i use the board with flippers, though i'm still trying to get over my fear of the deep end (i'm not afraid of the deep end if i swim with a floating noodle). i still can't use the board without flippers :( i should try the face dunking exercises lol :)
This is a great video, i don't swim very well, i never learned by lessons, and i managed to learn a little bit on my own, i advice to anyone to go to the pool and try to do basic stuff a nd get confidence around the water, you just have tou go with confidence :)
im 21, carnt swim never learned atall, i have good fitness levels and i can hold my breathe under water for quite long in the bath so in thoery i should be a good swimmer but its just a fear of going under and not being able get back up to the surface so scary but ive promised myself start of next year im going have swimming lessons, ill crap it but i got learn swim now cause i love water, and water parks, and beaches really would be amazing, wish me luck! :o), kind regards...
@DazzaMR2 ..I am 38 and I feel the exact same way with you! I finally took a swimming lesson at the local Y and now I can submerged without 'so much' fear ....
@DazzaMR2 i agree im 14 and i cant swim because my dad was too paranoid to teach me, anyways i think if your worried about not getting back up then maybe you should stay in a shallow end of a pool
Yeaa im 11 and i cant swim becuase i went on a water slide n i nearly drown n thts happend many times now and i cant go under water becuase i have something to do with my ears but im gunna try :).x
people everyone can swim your just scared get over your fear and wear goggles cause goggles are better to swim with your never going to drown cause your taller than the pool so dont be afraid!

Living in Selangor, Malaysia? learn to swim freely in only 12 hours! Don't pay, if ur not happy with what you've learned. Maximum 4 students per class. call 016-3533555 (Mr. Yeap).
You can try to take the swimming lesson to learn to swim. First take a deep breath and try to tuck the head inside the water and release the air from you noise. Then learn how to kick and how to move your arm. You can try by using a floation device that won't restrict you arm and leg movement so you can partice the swimming stroke technique without worrying afloat. Then, you can deflat the floation bit by bit until you won't need it anymore

I don't know if this will work for you but it worked for me. try wearing a pair of slippers in each of your hands and when you're in the water try using them as a kicker to keep you lift up in the water. because they create more drag in the water it's easier to float in the water. When you become better at it then let go of the slippers and use just your hands. It might work for you. Just don't try it by yourself ok? hehe
