I seriously love this game. I bought it for my dad and I on Christmas a few years back, because he and I used to love going to arcades (it was a special thing between us) and our favorite game was House of the Dead 2, then 3 came out and we played a lot of that. If house of the dead 2 you can find an unlimited lives upgrade in the game. You just have to get further into it. I actually liked this aspect in how you had to work to get the extra lives, and how the farther you got, the better the upgrades got. Plus 15 bucks seems well worth it if you ask me.

i have the second one on dreamcast. i think they chose not to update the graphics to keep it like the original, the same way they don't update the graphics in something like the namco arcade collection.

I beat the entire game and when u play the original mode u can find more stuff like a shotgun,other people to play as and to up yur continues by 10.It`s easier when u play the computer version (its the samething but with the mouse it gets easier by 50%)Thats how I beat both games u hav to download them seperately and its 75% worth it
I think I should point out something. Everytime you get game over, the game will give you more continues to have, however the maximum amount you can have is 9 I believe.
Thats for arcade mode, with original mode, you can get power ups that will give you more continues the next go round (I believe you mentioned this part) I even ran into an umlimited continues power up near the end of HotD 2. You have to work for it though. ;) I loved this game and cant wait to get Overkill.

There scattered in the original mode of House of the Dead 2, you just have to look even harder than how you actually were.
Ummmm, you can unlock extra continues the more you play the game...as well as easier difficulties...On house of the dead 2 i ended up with NINE continues as well as a "VERY EASY" mode. On House of the Dead 3 I even got an "ENDLESS CONTINUE" feature =)
heh i played one of these games at an arcade that my dad's friend owned his son would unlock the thing you put the coins in and push a button so we could continue as much as we want
FYI: HoTD2 is an arcade game originally ported to the Dreamcast in 199, HoTD3 is also another arcade game ported to the XBOX in 2004. Think about this game as a recopilations of both. I believe Sega could include the first one also, published in arcades and Saturn, but surely it will look VERY outdated

Just like the way you can unlock a "Credits + 2" option, you can also unlock a "Credits +5" option, a "Credits +10" option, and yes, an "Unlimited Credits" option... for both games. So yes, you can get unlimited continues, but you have to find and shoot the "item" for it within the games...

You can alternate between pressing B an Z to fire twice as fast. Just thought i'd share that info.
The Dreamcast graphics were what made 2 shine.
If you play long enough to actually make it through the game then you will be good enough to enjoy multiple plays as you work your way up to getting the Rogan costume.
@wiiviewr to be honest, they likely left it in its original state because it pays homage to the original as represented on the arcade and then the dreamcast. i can't fault you if you weren't part of the dreamcast generation as many people missed that and it's one of those "you had to have been there" sort of things that many people fail to grasp. if they had updated the content, people like myself would have been very upset, and we were likely the largest section of the target audience.
@wiiviewr That's because it's a direct arcade port.. if you went to an arcade in the 90's you'd have seen this game there with virtually the same graphics & lame voice-work.. it's not really the game's fault, these were top of the line graphics back then.. blame lazy game developers who do direct ports of ancient games to the Wii without improving the games.
@wiiviewr i used to have both of theese games for xbox and i found it most helpful to shoot the invincibility token. the only downside to that is that you can't find it until the WAY later levels.
@wiiviewr I know that it's been 7 months since you've posted this comment, but why compare it to the next game in the series, unless you're reviewing HOTD3? That's like reviewing Super Smash Bros. and comparing it to Melee, or Sonic the Hedgehog 1 to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, or Super Mario Bros. 2 to Super Mario Bros. 3. The graphics are better because it's the next game in the series.
One thing you didn't mention about the game was its immersion level...
Just how much you could find yourself getting into the game was amazing! At points when using the nykon gun I have I found myself dropping the controller and racing to my pocket for a quarter!

great review. and I've remember playing this game. and like you, I didn't use the wii zapper, since that thing is a piece of crap, I used my Perfect shot and duo shot gun Accessories, since those two can actully be used like guns! I've also used those gun type Accessories for zombie panic in wonderland. (maybe you should review that in the future someday)

at the end you need to get A or higher...(house of the dead 3 only)

One thing you didn't mention about the game was its immersion level...
Just how much you could find yourself getting into the game was amazing! At points when using the nykon gun I have I found myself dropping the controller and racing to my pocket for a quarter!

Not having enough continues was the reason why I traded the game after at least a year of owning the game.
Not being able to finish the game, and with my poor skills at shooting, I just felt that it was not for me.

...no. Just no.
The first game is not available due to lost source code, at least thats SEGAs statement, so we cant help that.
The 4th is not on consoles yet, its arcade only, and I actually doubt that the WII could handle it.
Also, its not called "HotD: Collection". Its called "HotD 2+3".

They didn't update the graphics because they wanted to keep a classic vintage feel by keeping the classic arcade graphics

great review. and I've remember playing this game. and like you, I didn't use the wii zapper, since that thing is a piece of crap, I used my Perfect shot and duo shot gun Accessories, since those two can actully be used like guns! I've also used those gun type Accessories for zombie panic in wonderland. (maybe you should review that in the future someday)

Don't ever cry that they didn't update the graphics on a game when they NEVER ADVERTISED it as such!
I picked this up when it was $19.99 and I loved it at that price. I am a huge fan of rails shooters and hoped that with the Wii's input method that LOTS more would be released:

@babsonnexus Not just that, but just throwing anything that still has a practical or mechanical use is incredibly selfish; donate the items to a local thrift store. I'm sure some kid would have been ecstatic to get a cheap wiizapper.
