  • Now the pier is lost, but the Medway Queen has been rescued and is being refurbished with a Lottery grant.

Herne Bay Museum, which records and displays all this history, is now under threat of closure. It has been confirmed by the Lottery that the Council would almost certainly get a grant if they applied. But will they apply? Watch the Herne Bay Museum page on Wikipedia, and the HerneBayMuseum channel for news. I have sent you a video response about this.

  • That is the old Herne Bay pier head in this film.

  • As a very young boy I was taken on the final scheduled voyage she made in 1963. Southend pier to Herne Bay. And back.

  • Thank you so much for this. This clip actually filmed 1963(last yr of service) or before - then wine bar IOW; sunk; raised; preserved on Medway; now total rebuild in Chatham Dockyard with lottery grant. Google Medway Queen Preservation Society for further info.

  • Good to see the Medway queen in motion, much better than where shes berthed ( October 2006 ) on Isle of Grain undergoing a seemingly endless rebuild. It survived Dunkirk evacuation, so why not a heritage or lottery grant to preserve something from Englands maritime history ?
