  • ok so i was a bit late but hey I was born in glasgow wooo go glasgow, u ever see the episodesabout that english snob lady and hugh/shug, shes in a few including first series

  • Whats so hard about the last sentence? i heard it first time! its can see yer way clear tae len me 23 pence for my bus fare hame

  • I find this dead easy to understand, and i'm only 14,and i've spent half my life in France. Rab C. Nesbitt, Chewin' the Fat and Still Game are three of the funniest shows i've ever seen. (Maybe I can understand this well because my dad speaks Scots)

  • he says can u lend me 23 p for bus fare home

  • I always wondered if part of the humour of Rab C. Nesbitt was that it was supposed to be difficult to fully understand him. I mean this show was made to be broadcast to the whole of the UK so weren't even southerners part of the intended audience? I can understand about 80% of what he'saying (I definetely get the gist of it although I don't understand some words) but I do have to concentrate. But he's a ranting boozer, is it wrong to say he doesn't speak clearly (it's not just dialect, is it)?

  • @graemeoliver84 It's not any more difficult i suppose than understanding scouse, Geordie or West Country or that but as i am Glasweigian i have no bother with it.

  • @alecahauf Um, for English people I think it is more difficult to understand than Scouse, West Country or even Geordie. I suppose it all depends where you're from and what you're familiar with. I've seen Americans saying they sometimes have trouble with what the characters are saying in The Office.

  • @alecahauf You can't compare Scouse to Glasgow or Geordie, because unlike the latter two accents, Scouse doesn't replace normal English words with it's own unique words. For example, some Geordies will say, "I'm gannin' oot into toon, an' I divven knoo what time I'll be back", whereas a Scouser will just say, "I'm goin' out into town, an' I don't know what time I'll be back".

  • @bugstrut I am not comparing, what i am saying is like many people form England do not understand much of the Glasgow accent just as people from Glasgow or Aberdeen like find it hard to understand the Scouse or Geordie language. Not that far from us in Glasgow is places like Fife where they say ken instead of know. when i was young i thought almost everyone in Fife was called Ken. In Dundee if u ask for a loaf you get two, ask for half a loaf and a bottle of Lemonade, they ask you what flavour

  • @alecahauf Okay, I see what you mean. There is no real "Scouse language" though, apart from a handful of words. The only ones I can think of are "Scally", which is just a shortened version of "Scallywag", and is now used all over Britain, and "Scouse", which comes from the Norwegian word "Lobscouse", which was the name of a stew, that I think was/is made with lamb. Oh, and then there's "Busy/Bizzie", which, I've heard is just a shortened version of "Busy-body", and is also used in other cities.

  • @alecahauf Most from scotland would find it easier to understand scouse or geordie better than most of the south

  • @Williamwallace0 Yes, most likely. All i'm trying say is that most UK accents are difficult to understand in various parts of the country whilst others present no problems. It depends where you are from. I.E. Pakistani's who speak in bad English accents to each other canm easily understand each other but if they speak to us they have a problem understanding and we them, if that makes any sense

  • @alecahauf I'm afraid it disnay mek ane sense atel, widjie hafte say "bad" its jest d'ffrent mon.

  • that is the funniest rab ep ever lol

  • @sezwheelz Aye, go to Billy connolly Glasgow accents nine and a half guitars on Youtube and it will give you a wee idea about the Glasgow accent. Some people think that when we say Mullguy it is the Glasgow way to say it but although the town is spelt Minlgavie it is rightly pronounced Millguy.

  • Now they have bouncers all over to stop this kind of thing. Classic.

    XD

  • I used to think Rab C Nesbit was a bit far-fetched as a character until I visited Glasgow! 90% of the population are dead ringers for Rab.

  • I think that's what makes Scottish comedy so easily accessable/approachable. It kinna holds a mirror up to the audience and says "This is who we are".

  • @daveedo20 My arse i have lived in Glasgow all my life and i assure you you would need to look really hard to find even a few people who even resembled this.

  • which series and episode is this from its absolut belting!

  • Welcome to the World Wide Web! - yes it's funny, and in response to comments regarding subtitles, they do use them worldwide even in America to help with strong country accents. It doesn't mean anything...just helping people understand what's being said.

  • :) scottish comedy at it's best, seriosely, thats as good as it gets 0_0..... JK:) LOL theres loads a fab comedy in scotland, chewin the fat rules!

  • i agree! :)

  • Never before have subtitles been so necessary.

  • why is it that us jocks can understand every accent in the english language but nobody can understand us, i think it might be that we are more intelligent than most. wrote that in plain english so you could understand it, another thing, clean your ears oot ya wallaper.

  • mate. Funnily enough, if you haven't grown up listening to a certain accent then it's tricky to understand it. Especially if you don't hear it much. You don't hear strong accents much cus most people don't understand them.. that's just how it works. and dont tell me you can understand every regional slang in England cus i know i can't. You say things like 'wallaper'.. but that's not accent that's just using different words.

ALSO i think davidmaxwaterman thingy meant his comment light heartedly.

  • I understand that!

  • If it wasn't for the unemployed the people working in the bastard dole wouldn't have a fucking job!

    Smug cunts!

  • Comment removed

  • WE ALL THERE NOW HA HA !!!

  • most of us have been on the dole? Where the fuck are living!!!!

  • Probably what makes this so funny is that most of us have been on the dole once or twice, I havent signed on in about a year. But they really do enjoy their jobs, they want to break you as a person. Its fucking appalling, but hey, thats people for ye.

    Up the job centre!

  • Absolutely. It took them 6 weeks to process my claim when i signed on 3 years ago, after 10 years of solid employment. And this is what you pay tax for? The system is set up NOT to help people and the people that work in job centres are hatefilled arseholes that have nothing but disdain for the poor fucks that use them.

  • how qualityy is he man the 1 on the other day was qualityy

  • lol love the accent ...

  • see when ye get right doon tae it...this is comedy genius.

  • Bring on the 2008 special! :-) I'm looking forward to it more than Kylie Minogues panties I bought off ebay

  • GENIUS

  • Its English in A Glaswegian dialect.

  • @manicmacintosh

It's Scots-English in a Glaswegian accent which probably makes it even harder for anyone outside Scotland to understand. yet we in Scotland manage to understand Cockneys, New Yorkers, Gordies, Texans, Scousers, Dubliners etc etc.

  • @Cybopath I think that's a combination of the Glaswegian accent being kind of made up of sounds from all different accents around the world - so we have experience with those sounds...... And of course TV.... TV shows always have Cockneys, New Yorkers, Geordies, Texans, Scousers, Dubliners etc...... So we hear them all the time.... How often do other places hear a Glaswegian in a TV Show.... Even today with pish like River City... It's still a heavily softened fake Glaswegian.

  • @childofthesun32

You think that the Glaswegian accent is made up of sounds of different accents around the world. What the hell is that supposed to mean? A bit of Australian, Dutch and Samalian thrown in there or something? The reason we understand more accents is the inward way media looks at itself and the more or less one way system that goes USA Media feeds> English Media feeds> Scottish Media.

Then again why does Scottish media have to focus on Glasgow? There other cities and regions.

  • @Cybopath I mean that I think that years ago peoples from all over the world would come to Glasgow and try to speak English with their different accents and the Glaswegian accent was born out of this combination of all these accents mixing together. I've heard Spanish people and German people talking and thought they were Glaswegian and it's not until I actually hear German words or whatever that I realise they aren't.

  • @childofthesun32

If that where the case Every port city in the USA would have a Glaswegian accent. The Glasgow accent is just a far west accent you can hear the west accent kick in at Livingston and it doesn't stop till ayrshire. If you thought German or Spannish people where glaswegian or had anything to do with influening the Glaswegian accent you have trouble with understanding accents. The only country that could possibly have an influence on the west coast accent is Ireland.

  • @Cybopath Have you ever heard a Glaswegian accent? Rab C isn't even speaking in a Glaswegian accent here. This is TV Glaswegian. Softened, with words pronounced properly so it can be shown in other areas and not just Glasgow. Also, you can't know for certain how an accent will develop just because certain peoples go to a place. I might be right, I might be wrong. I'm also a musican, I have no trouble whatsoever understanding accents. I listen to and differentiate between sounds and tones often

  • @childofthesun32

I have heard a Glaswegian accent pal, I have lived in Glasgow, I have worked with Glaswegians and I do have Glaswegian and west coast family and they don't sound german or spannish. This (People from all over the world) theory you have is pretty thin Considering London and other English cities have had far greater immigration. Glaswegian and the whole west coast is a lowland Scottish accent with a slight influence from Irish immigration at best.

  • @Cybopath I never said Glaswegians sound Spanish or German. So I'll stop commenting as you aren't keeping up with the conversation.
