This machine is useless for espresso, even after modifying it. I have a pressurized filter too, and even after this mod + my body weight tamping - I'm only getting ~11 second shots.
@ducati321 That's not our experience with it; we use all but the Maestro regularly for espresso and they work great. The Maestro is not designed to grind that fine ... not sure which model you have (there are currently 5) - Kat
Does this virtuoso make good espresso once you've made this adjustment? Or do you think it would be better to invest another $100 into buying a preciso.
I'm new to all this espresso stuff and am planning to buy a grinder first since it's very important no matter what machine you get right?
@aslambilal This is the bottom rung, really -- it's fairly consistent and will go fine enough, but you won't have a ton of room to move as far as that's concerned, so some folks find it limiting. The microadjustments on the Preciso really are a benefit, as the Virtuoso has more of a tendency to be 'torn between two notches' than some of the other stepped. If you're investing from the outset, I'd go with at least the Preciso. - Kat
Please can somebody help me? We went through the whole operation. Thanks to the video everything went very well. But ... at the end we managed to place back the hopper in the wrong position. And now we can't get it out anymore. What do we do?? thanks in advance, Cecile
That works with the Baratza Virtuoso??? , I think mine isn't grinding fine enough....(today I got my Rancilio Silvia and every shot is running to fast (10 sec to fill the double shot.)
mmm already did it....after a screwdriver fall on my foot, and 20 min trying to figure out how to open the virtuoso without broken it,....I did and it certainly improved the shot. but i'm working on 0 (cero) grind set. Maybe my coffee is old (after almost two months without espresso machine and the same beans)
Ah - yeah. I would try newer beans and see how it goes. As the beans age, they will get more dry and you will have to grind finer and finer...eventually you might not be able to grind fine enough on this grinder because of that. - Kat
Once beans are open/exposed to air, they will start to significantly degrade -- I usually recommend buying only what you will use in a week if possible, otherwise the quality will change quite a bit. - Kat
Well, we have done this in the store using the method we shot and it has worked just fine. If the machine is still under warranty, you might want to refer to Baratza's directions for liability purposes, but our method works fine.
I would see if tweaking the finest setting changes that -- on the Virtuoso, I wouldn't think you'd need to have it at 0 to get good results. Your coffee also plays a part - darker roasts need more coarse grind, lighter roasts more fine. - Kat
Hi! Yes, their directions vary a bit from ours; we're assuming that having the grinder being operational when turning the screw is to keep it from compressing ground coffee between the burrs and, yes, you do need to be cognizant of the push button on the front of the Virtuoso. - Kat

@9dirkjan I'd recommend contacting Baratza directly on this as they'll be able to assist you with any warranty related repair. - Kat

I think Gail checked yours before we sent it out, but you could try this to see if it improves your shot. - Kat

good to learn that.
how long should I store the beans before they get too dry ??
I'm trying to find local roasters (i don't think they are on my town, but the nearest point) , thanks for the info.
