  • This guy is like Ip man but for prying mantis, he is like yuen kay san. Amazing

  • Amazing!

  • Sifu Ip Sui's demonstration in this video was enlighten us to follow his way of training. His playing was not restrictive by standard forms but only combined with several SanShau , moving step by step ,freely playing in front of the spectators, like walking but it is not walking, relaxation playing in two parts , hands & steps are separated ,moving smooth that was a high level presentation. If return back to young age,you can see the power.Stances we can apply to Sifu Tin Loi 's "Big San Kung "

  • Exactly. He was "being himself" while still being "in the system".

  • mala la wea

  • Holy shit his hands are faster then mine at 93 (check my video out to see my speed) and I just turned 17. This mofo also knows how to suck his testicles into his body.

He'd mop the floor with me -.-

  • Guys, this shit is beyond deadly. I have seen it first hand in my garage at the hand of a Sifu. You cannot imagine how such small movements can do so much damage.

  • Three blokes tried to rob the late grandmaster around 15 years ago or so. They were all seriously injured. He was bloody hard and genuinely well respected in martial arts.

Moves are not flashy and not obvious but all are aimed at maiming with minimal effort.

If you want to understand Chow Gar Praying Mantis, seek instruction. It is a painful style to learn and admittedly boring at first. Lots of arm/leg conditioning/dynamic tension/partner drills.

  • @henh32 - Extremely painful to study.

  • SPM is an in-fighting system, similar to Wing Chun. There are kicks but it is impractical to use in such confined quarters.

In close the feet are used to "trap" the opponents stance, and control their stance to your benefit.

    Ip Sui was no slouch.

I'm sorry to hear he has passed away. When did he go?

  • oops i mean aint

  • guy said he is 90 somethin my cantonese at so good

  • yeah but ur english is slippin lol jk

  • I know there's "alot more" that goes on in spm then what you see in this vid.

  • i dont know praying mantis, but from the way the old master did it..i can tell he's got a solid stand within him..plus he's so old..and i wonder how those forms work out in real situation...

  • damn right he was deadly he beat all other kung fu masters at the time for his title cause many people challenged him, sampochin ur right people who dont know spm interpret as slaps, with hops, dont bother

  • its very hard to interpret southern mantis especially to a non-practitioner, but every movement has a meaning and a use. But believe me, the old man was deadly.

    RIP sigung ip sui

  • what is seen is not what is felt

  • I have as Much respect for SPM than i do for TKD

  • I don't get what's so crazy about this. I mean, I've seen the past 3 clips of the Chow Gar southern praying mantis and I just see bunch of walking, little hops, and a lot of hand-motions. No kicks at all?

  • Yeah, there is but nobody is showing it in these kind of demo. Little grasshopper, when is walking not walking and little hops are not little hops. Got it?

  • Don't reply unless you have: 1. respect for others, 2. insightful knowledge or an answer to the question, 3. willingness to help. If you lack any of the said qualities, I'll just have to ignore you or clown you for it. The only thing that was right about your reply was that it answered the question "No kicks at all?". Let me know if you have something insightful I might be interested in.

  • You don't need to reply either, as I have no intention of disclosing any further info. If you are still curious then search for someone in you area to see what that is all about. For years the SPM is a well keep secret. The techniques are quite technical and complex and takes much time to master. Stuffs that I see here on Youtube are quite a departure from what I learned over 35 years ago.

  • some respect on your behalf would be nice too. What you see as just walking and hand motions is alot more than that. Its hard to describe it without you experiencing it. All those hand motions have lots of strength behind it and his stance is like rock solid. It lacks the kicks because most southern kungfu have none. The south emphasizes punches. I mean Wing Chun doesnt have many kicks and they walk and punch too. And plus hes 92 and he moves fast.

  • As iexcalibui2 says, the southern styles have fewer kicks than the northern Kung Fu styles. Chow Gar Tong Long does have kicks, however most of them are below waist height and aimed at the knees, groin, or Dim Mak points in the legs. The main thing that Chow Gar teaches, which you don't see in any videos you watch, is a heavy bridge. Heavy limbs. It can be hard to explain. Suffice to say (in an accomplished prctitioner), what looks like a light slap will have a lot of power behind it.

  • This is Master Ip Chee Keung's father. Truly amazing southern mantis
