The Phantom may have been lacking in a few things in the early models, namely a gun which proved to be problematic becasue of missile tech at the time. But the skill, training, and adaptability of its pilots more than made up for its shortcomings.

if it was the biggest flop in the U.S. aircraft history, then why were more than 5,000 F-4 Phantom II produced? Why did the USN, USAF and the USMC flew them in service for such a long period? F-4 Phantom II is one fine aircraft, what went wrong was that in the beggining the F-4 pilots were not trained for dogfight situations, because it was believed that the dogfight era was over due to the new missile technology. That was the biggest flop in the US aircraft history. Never the F-4.

Exactly, the "biggest" precieved threat at the time were Russian bombers, which the Phantom was designed to shoot down. The Phantom was designed to be an interceptor but was pushed into the dogfighting role.

I stand by my opinion. the F-4 is shit and the F-8 and MiG-21 rule. I had two uncles who flew in 'Nam one flew an F-4 the other an F-8. My uncle Roy who flew the phantom was shot down three times because his jet was crap and he was the squadron ace with 7 MiGs to his name. 3 MiG-17's two MiG-19's and two MiG-21's.

Either you or your uncle is a liar. I am a professor of history and a published historian, and the top American ace in Vietnam is Charles deBellevue, with six kills; he was a USAF F-4 backseater. The top ace of the war was Nguyen Van Coc, a VPAF MiG-21 pilot with nine kills.

I will agree that the F-8 and MiG-21 were and are better dogfighters--but the F-4 got the bulk of kills. That's historical fact, and no amount of wishful thinking can change it.

Do you hate F-4s because your uncle died in a phantom in vietnam? Also why do you say F-4s suck? I mean that they are still being used by some airforces in the world (for example Hellenic airforce). If they sucked as you say nobody would really use after vietnam? I'm just asking and i don't want to start a fight.

Yes my uncle was killed while flying an F-4. And I know that they are still in use today but I dont hate the F-4 as a whole just the model from the 60's they didnt have guns until after my uncle died and the ejector seats did not always work. When my uncle Roy was shot down for the 4th time the ejection handle failed and he and his RIO slammed into the side of a cliff killing them both. Thats why I hate the F-4. I in no way want to fight you thanks for asking.

It is used for ground attacks and patrol only. Our only serious business dogfighter is the F-16 block 52 right now. I'm sure the Greek goverment is in the decision of getting EF typhoon , rafales or PAK FA from russians.

@Sentinel28A Yeah, but in my personal opinion the only reason why the F-4 got most of the kills was simply because so many of them were produced, only the US Navy used the F-8 Crusader and was starting to retire them towards the end of the war. The North Vietnamese Air Force didn't have many MiGs at a single time because although more were rolling out of the factory, some were out getting shot down. And after the F-4E and top gun established, didn't it put the F-4's kill to loss ratio to 12-1
