Satanism was created as a backlash and is an inversion of the Catholic Bible. The early Satanists took the Bible and figured that if you did something other than what the Bible says than that would be the work of Satan. I've read the Satanic Bible and I find it quite hilarious. However, I have talked to several Satanists and they were either messed up in the head or were quite intellectual and well-spoken. But, most devout Christians are the same way...

But as it is, "Satan" means "The accuser" in old hebrew and "the adversary" in arabic, so that fact has allowed for a lot of reinterpretations along the lines of "we are aethists who oppose christianity/religion" etc. Many of them seem to be interested in the occult, however. Yes, Satanism for a given definition: "Church of Satan", for instance, are not devil worshippers. The are basically atheists with a twist. But they call themselves satanist, nevertheless. Frost of Satyricon says his beliefs are more or less summed up by Satanism, by which form I do not know, but he's not a devil worshipper. Very few black metallers are devil worshippers, disregarding of what fans and opponents want to believe. I guess you have to be in the scene yourself to know...

The idea of Satanism (non-theistic) is that Satan is used as a symbol of freedom. It's not that they worship him, but that the simple use of him as their face represents power or elitism.
Satanism (theistic) is just worshiping the opposite deity in Christianity.
I, personally, am an atheist. But I still like the Satanist (atheistic) ideology. The fact that if humans are inherently sinful, then why hold back your lusts or desires?
