  • looks kinda rough but she sounds nice, good to see old engines like this one here being ran!

  • @duro20 yes--- used in the WW2 tanks!

  • @duro20 Yes you are correct. used in tanks. WW2

  • @douro20 The first American V8's where the caddy Fklatheads first made in all 1914 Caddy's . In 1936 they improved them vastly. The last one was made in 1948 in all Caddy's. Same engine as in the Tanks in WW 2 but no hose outlet on the Water pump for a heater connection. Many crate ( L head was the proper name for Flatheads ) Flathead caddy's where sold in the early 50's after the war as they where not needed in tanks anymore. The 1949 Overhead high compression then was out with 10 more HP.

  • @greezeyD One piece block, only the early ones in the pre 1936 where two piece blocks, all 1936 to 1948 Flat head (L head) caddy's where modern one piece Blocks. One water pump. Ford and Merc flatheads had two pumps one on each side. I have had both engines over the years. They sound great with Glass packs.

  • Yes they used two of them and the Caddy hydramaticautomatic trans. in the tanks but they where made to go only forward. Many years ago a Friend of mine bought a crate caddy Flathead made for the tanks with the trans but it only had forward gears! I had a 1948 caddy the last flathead V8 they made and also a 1946, same engine. Great motor and was 346 Cubic inches, hydralic lifters and 150 HP with l;ots of low end power. 7 quarts of oil without the filter alone! much smoother then the 49 OHV V8

  • Would this be the engine they used in the M5 tank?

  • wow dude, the guy with the bottle must really hate that hand... and his eyebrows:D

  • I love these old caddies. I had a '40 cad v8 in my 24 dodge roadster, i just loved all the idiots thinking it was a ford flathead in a model A. I love how ignorant people are, they barely look similar.

  • sweet i never knew that cadillac made a flathead v8

  • I suppose an aftermarket electric fuel pump would prime things nicely.

But, not a modern one as 50 psi or so may be too much.

  • shouldnt backfire unless your ignition timing is off or possible valve lash issues.

  • any truth to the rumor that a caddy v8 like this is a 2 piece block? i think i heard of it from a book, saying the cost to solid cast an engine block at the time was horrendous, and the dirty thirties didnt leave alot of experimentation budget.

  • that sounds sick

  • what size is the engine?

  • Heres the deal with pouring gasoline into the carb. It is THE SIMPLEST AND EASIEST WAY to prime a carbeurator. That being said, typically you just pour in about a cup, start the engine, and when it stops, repeat the process until the carb is primed. It is not the safest thing to do to continually pour while the engine is turning over as a backfire can hurt you. Another method is to saturate the air filter with ether, and put that on there while you turn it over.

  • @gildorthemad

I would not try this inside a garage. You just might burn the house down.

  • Pouring gasoline into a carb is one of the stupidest things to do. I know two people who have had skin grafts because of doing this and having the motor backfire. Just do it right and rebuild the carb. MUCH safer

  • pussy...its called priming

  • no...it is dangerous

  • u dump in a little fuel aka prime, untill the fuel is pumped up from the pump and into the carb....its not a faulty carb.

  • ya sure.

    Until it backfires on you

  • sissy

  • Very cool! The Caddy flattie would be my choice to mod, not only because of the big displacement, but mostly because, unlike the Ford, the exhaust tract is NOT between the 2 center cylinders and NOT thru the coolant.

  • i thought only ford made flatheads...but then again thats kinda a stupid assumption

  • This was Cadillac's first V8; it only produces 70hp, but a massive amount of torque. It would be an excellent engine for a tractor.

  • never new that caddy made a flathead.. what were they in??

  • in a cadillac

  • the guy with the gas bottle was smooooth!

  • Bad fucking ass!!

  • That sounds mean! I love it!

  • can always trust a old flathead to fire up

  • nice! sounds awesome idle=300rpm lol

  • Be nice with dual carbs on edmunds manifold.

  • My step-uncle gave me a flathead cadillac just like this, and it's been sitting out since the 60s or 70s. I love the way these engines look and sound.

  • sounds real good

  • i gotta get one of those to put in my 49 sedanette

  • wow what a sound.

  • the sound of it is awesome

  • love the sound of it

  • flatheads rock.

  • Good to see some old iron running.

  • we have one in a 32 roadster. want to sell the engine if you dont have plans for it??

  • ewwww..I was just waitin' for that carb to backfire and scorch a face or hand. I wanted to lean away from my computer screen even! Other than that......how cool is it to have an ancient Caddy flathead in your possession? Sounds pretty darn good too.

  • That is amazing. What are you going to do with it?
