Well the interesting thing about bowling styles in general is while people think it may take strength to crank the ball it really doesn't. It all comes down to technique. If it was all about strength there is no way that the professionals could get through 40 games of qualifying and still be able to bowl finals at all. That said, I don't know how to do it. I am very much a stroker/tweener myself.
There are lots of wood lanes in my home town. I can see the need for proper form for the lanes.
@higashi1343 Actually, higashi, I have a very small wrist... my finger holes are only 23/32" and 21/32". It's all in throwing a lighter ball. I normally throw 16 lbs. with my thumb in, and the ball I use for no-thumb is 15 lbs...but I may drop to a 14 for that.
It is still amazing for me to throw bowll without thumb, even 14lbs.
I used to use houseball (bowls installed in the alley) with 10lbs, so When I bought my own bowl, I told it to the shop, but they say only 14 or 15lbs are available and also told me that even old men more than 60 years old uses 15lbs, so i was obliged to take 14lbs. I am stroker, and of course throw with thumb, but in the beginning, I had to fight with elbowache
@higashi1343 And thank you too for yours. I am going to practice tomorrow night, with my thumb in, and will shoot video and post. With my thumb in, I am also a stroker/tweener. I wear a "sleeve" over my elbow to prevent elbow pain, but the sleeve makes my thumb swell, so I have to take it off after approximately one game.
Thanks for your reply. If you have elbow pain with 16lbs, it may be too heavy for you.
Why don't you use 15lbs with your thumb? Then you may nt have to wear sleeve.
Now I've got used to 14lbs and do not have to wear sleeve on my elbow anymore. Instead, I have slight pain on my wrist and 2 fingers to throw hook bowl. Usually I play 6 games on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe too much for fingers and wrist of a man with 48 years old.
@higashi1343 I bowled 9 games tonight, and the lanes were pretty dry. 212 average using a different ball each game (including my spare ball all game).
Here is the playlist of all nine games. I had a nice stretch later where I had 13 strikes in a row (personal best).

@paradigmata: Yeah, I agree. It's neat to see a female power player. Most of these other women in the entire P-League have a style similar to what I see in my house bowling leagues. That's not to say the style isn't effective, but I always think the power players and crankers are a lot more fun to watch.
@tomcon19 My theory on this... When I traveled to Tokyo this past Oct, I noticed that all the bowling houses I visited - the lanes were wood. I'm pretty sure that, given the fact that even the JPBA men are mostly strokers, wood is preferred - as the oil patterns cater to this style. In America, most of the houses are turning to synthetic, and the oil changes 3-4 boards during a game, so the style change on the PBA is to one that has power and that can overcome the changes.
There should be some crankers in JPBA men's bowler, but it is very difficult for te most of women to thoow like her, I think.
I saw practice video to be a cranker. 1st step was to throw without thumb. I tried, but stopped immediately. In order to to that I have to hold bow with wrist.I realized I could not do that. If I still tried, I would injure my wrist.
@higashi1343 No thumb 1st step in practice video? That's interesting. I started as a hooker when young. When I decided to crank/curve harder, I figured move farther over and get a ball with more hook potential. I tried no-thumb, it's not bad but no fun for me.
Also, I never knew synthetic in Japan is rare! I can't stand wood lanes. What a difference it makes when you curve the ball a lot.
If you want to throw no-thumb, you must use a lighter ball than you normally use. Two pounds less should be good.
Here is myself bowling no-thumb: youtube.com/watch?v=T-NjsDjN7KU <-copy and paste this in, I couldn't hotlink this. I also sent as a video response.
The one season I used no thumb full time, I averaged about 210, and my thumb-in average was around 200. I am now about 215 using my thumb in and a 15 year old ball.
Aki Suzuki has participated in p-league since series 32. You can see her first partcipation with the movie uploaded by Mrpleaguefan. In first participation, she was 3rd in final. She has no relation with Risa Suzuki. Suzuki is one of common family name in Japan (should come to top 3 or 5). I also like her form, very smooth and orthdox.

I saw your video. Your form did not look like a crancker, but the bowl is.
You must have very strong wrist. I canoot do that.

@higashi1343 The ball is definitely not too heavy for me, I want a heavier ball!. I'm getting older (49 years old), and my elbow needs to loosen up.

As a matter of fact I have never seen synthetic lanes though I do not know the alley a lot.

Yes, I think I saw it here. It's not possible for me to be a cranker. Even to get a small hook as a stroker, I aiche with my wrist.
Maybe there are some alleis with synthetic lanes in Japan, but quite rare, so I do not know what color they have and look like.
