The theory is that it's easy to maintain and hard to steal. Also, in a flat city you don't shift all that much while riding in traffic.

In reality, the fixed gear thing is exaggerated. At least as many messengers use mountain bikes, road bikes, and various single speeds.

Gas sucks that's the only point I have to make. Moderation is pussyfooting toward no change at all and not a solution, anyone whose been on earth for more than 20 years can agree with that. Some stupid moderation idea is old and used already and it hasn't worked so face reality, gas needs to go.

I messenger in LA and I got this smog mask called a "totobobo super cool" and it works pretty good. It just covers the mouth so you can exhale through your nose and it wont get hot and stuffy. It also has changable filters that in LA last about 9 or 10 days of messengering before they become blackened. I recommend it to any messengers or cyclists I cant imaging working without it now. Peace.

Gas in our cars clogging our cities is a problem that I hate more than anything and as long as it continues I'm gonna say how much I oppose it. it would be so bad if bike messengers obeyed the fucking traffic laws. those guys think the rules don't apply to them. running red lights, not stopping, no signals, in and out of lanes. if you wanna cycle like a fool you are gonna get hit by a car, to some degree. maybe if they cycled safe it wouldn't be a hazardous job.

ring up the courier companies in your city, put your name down, they have a pretty high turn over rate so you should get one quite easily if you keep ringing up

It seems this job is one of those "get older, make less" ones, due to aging, injury, etc. On the other hand, many other jobs allow you to progressively make more as you age(i.e. promotions). I worked my way up to owning my own landscaping co. and the sky is the limit...or is it the ground?
