@brereton1113 We almost have the technology to voice generate a song. I'll bet in a few more years there will be software for it. I also would love an Aerosmith cover of 'Shadows of Love', Bet Steven Tyler could really wail on that one. Band in a Box can reproduce music styles in midi, just a matter of time before an vocal element is applied.
Lovely song: Dig the the Getz-Gilbeto "Girl from Ipenaema' slower bossa nova feel...with half steps up and down, sultry voice, side stick snare, Spanish guitar riffs -and in this case, a trombone instead of sexy sax.. of course! -Huh? what? - er, um...anyway, I really like it...and I'm sure Thomas knows perfectly well what I am talking about. ;-)
Dolby gets heat from Dan Hicks fans for "taking the fun out of the song" -- and their complaints are partially justified (Dolby's version is slower and less quirky than the original). Yet I've always thought it was a neat that someone as nutty/nerdy as Dolby would choose to play this song in such a straightforward, sensual way.
True, Dolby sapped the "novelty" from the song, but by doing so, he also made it timeless.
You got that right.

I love Dolby but I have to wonder what a Sade cover of this song would sound like.

Just fab - great memories. And how the hell did you get Basil Fawlty to play the trombone on this track??

Sigh, the 80s + the first half of the 90s were simply a better time with better musicians..........
+ even the "non-musicians" were better had had much more profile and class.....

Amazing song and Thomas' strongest and most timeless IMO. It's the only one of his hits that hasn't aged and doesn't sound mired in the 80s

Hey Spakey - Was that at SDSU with Modern English? Was at that show and STILL one of the best concerts I've seen.

He 'was' a genius.

To redo a "Dan Hicks" track Thomas Dolby just put a more slow "SOULFUL/JAZZ" dip to it.

Love the song, though I think the tempo's just a tad fast to get the effect he wanted.
I know they were long songs, but I keep wishing there were more tracks on "the flat earth". His "retrospectacle" covers most of them.

I remember when this aired.
It wasn't until about 10 years later, I found a "best of" containing this track. This is my favorite track from Dolby
