  • thanks for sharing, I'll never forget the chilling report that the ship and it's crew may of went down and then the later reports the Superior was to rough to recover the ship or any of it's crew members believed to all still be on board due to being hit without any warning that waters had turned angry. November waters we know survival was not likely due to many factors but mostly the temps of he water. Superior never warms even in our long, hot summer days.

  • sad sad sad great video love to all

  • what an awesome song

  • so apparently my friends dad wrote this song for Gordon Lightfoot. :O)

  • Talent isn't limited to a space, time or place. "Don't judge a book by it's cover". Sometimes you discover a great treasure between the pages. You just need to take the time to look and listen.

  • One of my all-time faves from the '70s...a truly powerful song.

  • I saw him once 3 years ago hear in Portland Or----still awesome! He played them all!

  • at least I am spared from people 'whooping!' on this version

  • this is a great ballad...i play this song over and over and over....it has such great meaning my uncle was a sailor and my dad was in WW2

  • this is a great ballad

  • I guess some people don't like him because he's not American. When he writes an historical song he does it with the utmost respect for the the subject.. Great Canadian legend. It's too bad this isn't a very good quality video of him singing it though.

  • I Guess some people him because he's not American.

  • Couldn't you just drown in this song !

  • Couldn't you just drown in this song ?

  • This is a U.S. Midwestern and Canadian historical song rendered by an artist that no one will ever match. For the faces and the names, I can't listen to this song enough.

  • I was showing my son the great lakes on the map, "there's Lake Ontario,Lake Erie,Lake Huron,Lake Michigan, and Lake Gichagoomee" He says"How come it says Lake Superior? I said " Because It's wrong!!"

  • Juat saw him in Torrington Connecticut tonight and it was amazing I got chills when he played this ..its by far my fave by him that voice of his , loved it my whole life and I am now 46 and I will be listening to him another 46....way to go Gordon and thanks for over 40 yrs of music ...keep strumming baby!

  • still my favorite song

  • is it wrong of me that every time i hear this song i dress like a pirate , go out in my row boat , stand up in with a telescope and blar this as loud as possible ? dose anyone find this odd?

  • @BLOODBOX762X39

I don't think pirates back then carried AK-47's, but maybe...

  • Where did you record this? Man, I could swear I was at this show... Konocti Harbor Resort, Kelseyville, CA... 2002?

  • 42 people need their fucking stupid heads checked

  • @platter1000 dont worry there will always be idiots in the world. jealousy will get them nowhere.LOL; i think that there are people who actually give bad reviews just to have something to do. if i am wrong , then this country is in deeeeeeeppp shit... remember, honestly always prevails.

  • Where does the love of god go when an artist is trying to make a buck and all around them their supposed fans are stealing and bittorenting all of their work?.

    Like this.

  • I had the chance to see Gorden Lightfoot and band, way back, years ago, somewhere in the '80s'. I still remember what an awesome concert that was, what amazing talent, so missing from the fluff music has become today. Thanks so much for all of your great music Gordon, I'm a lifetime fan.

  • a powerful song.........a strong reminder to thse who were lost on that faithful day in November.........only Gordon Lightfoot could do it in song.

  • Reminds me of when I lived in Canada back in 70's, Lotsa talent there....Neil Young, Joni Mitchell.....

  • aah uhm I know this is not a real chat but.. Anyone up for some cam chat

  • I remember this sone when it came out. I loved it then. Erie but wonderful! I love this man!

  • Possibly the best song ever written!

  • Edmund Fitzpatrick has such a lovely voice.

  • This song always brings me a lot of peace because it reminds me of a time long ago, when everything was so safe and peaceful. I was a little kid, and it was all so simple and innocent.

I hope i can have this song playing for me whenever i die, it's THAT good. It would be a peaceful way to go.....

  • A true Canadian icon. and timeless performer.

  • This man is Canada's best ,,And it's plain to see why. God Bess you Gordon.

  • Gordon is a great guitar player as well. Nothing real flashy but crisp and clean. He is magic on the Gibson 12-string.

  • I agree with you afgi420 Awesome Tune! Thankyou for posting this.

  • awesome song!

  • Props to bass player Rick Haynes in this song...a true musician!

  • He has such a unique and beautiful voice. No one can compare. All the covers of this song are crud (no offense) compared to the original. He's just irreplaceable. And this song is too amazing for words because of it's visual aspect (like the images you see in your mind) You can picture every last word... Too amazing...

  • i think that this song should be theme for deadliest catch. how many of you think so?

  • This Is My Favorite Song Of All Time! What A Story He Has Unique Singing. For The 29 That Died On The Edmund Fitzgerald. (R.I.P).

  • it is not my favorite

  • Right. Gordon Lightfoot should have been invited to perform at the Olympics. I was quite disappointed. Will go hear him though this coming Friday, April 9, 2010.

  • He is changing the lyrics in his future concerts, the crew was NOT at fault for their ship sinking. This must be Blessed news for all the families of the crew. They say now it was a rogue wave that broke the ship. May you all Rest in Peace, you have been vindicated.

  • Shame on the Olympic committee for not adding GL to the list of preformers at the 2010 Olympic games either opening or closing ceremonies - I was glad to see Neil Young but very disappointed that Lightfoot hadn't been included. Didn't care at all about Ashley McIssack (he is a freak)... Just my two cents everyone!

  • he is defnetly not dead

  • Apparently he called a radio station when he overheard that he had died while at a dentist's office. Reminds me of Mark Twain "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated" :)

  • he is a raely good singer

  • he isnt dead it was a horriable rumor..

  • anadian folk icon Gordon Lightfoot is alive and well, says the singer's long-time friend, despite rumours to the contrary which spread quickly on Twitter and were picked up by some mainstream Canadian media outlets.

  • Just heard gordon has not passed away.

  • NO HE DIDN'T!!

It was a rumour started on twitter.

  • mossman67 honor these men dont disgrace them

  • mossmman67 was you a sailor if not shut up

  • Mossman67, are you saying that if us Canadians of Irish descent make "2nd hand Irish music" we should leave it alone" F@$%k you. I'm as Irish as you, and we will make the music we love!

  • ohhhhhhhh wish i was back home in derry!!!!!!!!

  • VIDEO CRAP!!

  • Wow ! What class this guys got !

Wish more music like this was on the radio now !

  • i was at school when i found out abot this song my teacher mrs.shepca gave us a peas of papper it was the lyrics and then she put the song on

  • Captain McSorley and crew rip...

  • There was a post that questioned why is it that Lightfoot or Chapin get only positive comments on you tube and that it was perhaps policed..etc.

Well I think in Gord's case..there may be those that question the power of his voice or even if it ever was a great voice....

(I personally love his voice..it is so real!!..so genuine like a good friend telling you story with emotion..)

But its also the man...somehow we innately know that his "persona" is "integrity" in a physical form..

  • Captain McSorley was my great uncle. I wish I had known him.

  • It's a compelling song that is fresh every time I hear it. Gordon imbues this song with life as only he can bringing the ill-fated crew, the doomed ship into vivid focus. I have always loved this epic of mourning and remembrance and as I see it, I always will.

  • We never forgot that November I was in a cedar swamp and had trees crashing all over the place.

We in the States and in Canada have not forgoten.

  • We, of the United States Coast Guard did our best to locate any survivors. What we found were the ghosts of 29 crew members. Gordon, who is a good friend of mine, did his best to recount the events leading up to this terrible tragedy.

  • @Pistolero7081 I am ex Navy currently working on the river and crack Coast Guard jokes but I know this:"You have to go out but nothing says you have to come back". You guys don't ever give up that reputation.

  • Lightfoot wrote this right after the wreck, relying on media reports so as to be very factual. He didn't want the men who died to be forgotten like all the others shipwrecked in the Great Lakes.

  • I've noticed that the comments for guys like Lightfoot and Chapin are unbelievably positive for Youtube. Either this music doesn't attract any jerks or they are well policed. Or maybe it's just too easy. Whatever the answer I'm not going to figure it out at 3:30 in the morning

  • not cash... not anybody can tell a story in a song like gordon lightfoot.

  • 34 Years ago today is when she went down...

  • I love this song. When I was a lot younger, I actually saw the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Michigan.

  • It went down 34 years ago today.

  • Comment removed

  • if you dont like this song then you are a tool.. simple as that.

  • @pokersuperstar interesting that you think if I don't agree with you I'm an idiot... you must have a hard time getting along.... anyway I like this song, so don't get your panties all twisted. ^_^

  • It has been one of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it, I was in the Navy and we were out at sea. Also I live about 75 miles from Whitefish Ponit.

  • Lovely tribute song, he has a great voice.

Reminds me of "Lifeboat Mona" by Luke Kelly.

  • This song is the most haunting thing I've ever heard--I can only agree withELM4R14CH1. Long live Gord.

  • dude i love folk music, my aunt could not think of this song

  • can some one explain this song to me and what it means ,thanks, and who is john holmes

  • It's a song about a shipwreck on the Great Lakes in the US. The ship was the Edmund Fitzgerald and all crew members died.

John Holmes was a porn star in the 70s.

    There you go!

  • It's about a ship that sunk in gitche gumee (lake superior) in 1975.

  • just hearing it gives you shivers.

    incredible.

  • i feel the same

  • I know a man who knew a member of the Edmund Fitzgerald kinda changed the whole song for me.

  • keep it up

  • Aballad not to be forgotten,I

  • I first heard this song in music class in fourth grade. Amazing. Haven't heard it for years until today.

  • same with me- a friend mentioned it at lunch today and it made me want to hear the song again... it has a lot more meaning now that I'm older.

  • I saw Gordie in Peoria, Illinois last year. People drove in from St. Louis, Chicago, all over the midwest for the show. He is a true classic. I nominate him for the rock n roll hall of fame(even though he doesn't play much rock. He should be there with Dylan, Willie , Springsteen etc.

  • I have listened to Lightfoot since my mom would play his albums to calm me to go to sleep over 35 years ago. I never had a dad, but this man sang me to sleep my whole life.

  • Excellent comment man, and sentiment!

  • With you in every way, brother!

  • sounds like you have a pretty special mom too.

  • @tworottz You are lucky! God bless you!

  • @tworottz - Sorry u never had a father. Hopefully you turned out well! I did the same thing...Listening to the soft rock when going to bed...many gordon lightfoot songs. My grandfather was in the coast guard reserve when the ship went down.

  • @tworottz Same here!! Excellent music!

  • @tworottz That was beautiful.

  • @tworottz That's kind of sad. I wish you would have had a dad.

  • Love the song. I live close to Lake Erie and when I go up to visit in Nov. I always have this song running through my head.

  • music at its finest, with a very true and unforgetable story behind it.thanks for posting and booo to the ushers for cutting it short...

  • Sweet memories from my past... Thank you!

I hope the US is always deserving of your friendship. No star is truer than Polaris. You folks are the reason the good Lord put those beautiful Northen Lights to the North.

  • Comment removed

  • Ahhh.. both are Canadian..

  • yeah never dog bob dylan gordon lightfoot would tell you the same

  • Keep playing the classics - Gordo

  • Gordon Lightfoot is just like Bob Dylan, but he does not suck.

  • Wow. Goteggs1234. You've made no valid point, and prove to be the most ignorant viewer of this video.

  • the dylan of canada great song

  • It's sad to see all of the bigotry and racism here.Man,can't a person go anywhere without hearing the term 'nigger'.I'm sick of it

  • Well said. I totally agree with you. I've always been in awe in regards to how he makes you feel a song - especially this one, my favorite of all of his. I live in the Northeast, not really near the Great Lakes. I guess the closest would be Lake Erie. However, I do feel this song from having experienced my share of storms while spending many years in the Navy. Yup, this song can really be felt. Loved your post.

  • Today marks the 33rd anniversary of this great tragedy. Living in MN and spending most of my life near/in/around this great/terrifying lake really makes this song hit me that much more. His words are haunting and really capture the essence that is Gitche Gumee.

  • Yeah I'm from MN too, and spent many summers on the North Shore and the Ontario coast past Thunder Bay. The song has additional meaning for my though because my dad died November 21 1975, shoveling snow laid down by the following storm system, which dropped three feet on central MN that Thanksgiving.

  • Oh boy, the God Squat never stops. Do you really think God needs people to argue for his/her cause?

  • how could you not love this ballad/ its death of 29 men will live forevr thanks to such a ballader

  • i think this religious issue can be solved pretty easily.

  • best song written.i wish grls were on the ship XD

  • what is all this religion talk. The song is about a shipwreck, and I agree, it's a great song.

  • The best song ever written. I have loved it from the first listen. Finally after thirty years I got to see him sing it live.Absolutely Brilliant

  • Hell of a song Eh?, saw it live recently as well. and hope to do so again in march

  • The man who retreived the ball from the Fitz was my mom's old teacher from Sault Ste. Marie.

  • Could we please get back to the video? It's too beautiful a song to have all this trash talk.

  • aren't pea-brained critiques of christianity so utterly boring?

i'm looking at you mr. maher, hitchens, dawkins, etc...

but if laughing at equally moronic literal interpretations of scripture gives you pleasure, well...

so yes, you do - not secretly, but openly - dig (anti)christianity.

shiver me timbers and walk the plank

  • Gordon Lightfoot is one of the most enjoyable singers living today. Nice, simple and honest songs. Thanks for this video.

  • i wish someone would write a shanty about the ethan allen wreck in upstate ny. but most singers today are three sheets to the wind.

    arrrgggg.

  • my all time favorite,

  • I love this song because i am a nautical whiz and I love maritime songs.

  • nice try buddy - but i've forgotten more about the nautikos than you will ever know.

go back to your kiddie pool and let the real seafaring experts enjoy this song - far, far more than you ever could.

  • oh fuck. i'm sorry,i didnt realise that you had to have experience in the subject matter to enjoy a song! tool.

ps-the dandy warhols version of this pisses all over the original.
