Paid vs volunteer. I'm lucky to be in a department where both guys have a good relationship. I'm a volunteer and I'm still going in houses or more frequently going out in the woods battling mother nature. Alot of our paid staff started out as volunteers too- including our chiefs.
Love it!! This has to be my fired apartment. Like the video said "some volunteers". I have noticed it is the older volleys that seem to be the problem. The younger guys are eager to learn. Now if only we could get the lifelong volleys from corrupting their minds!
This is kinda messed up. I was a vol. firefighter/emt and now paid firefighter. I have to say they work just as hard and train almost as much,in a vol dept. is most likely located in a very small community so you probably do not run as many calls as a paid department witch leaves more time for training. But i do agree on volunteers should carrie their selfs in a more professional manner seen a lot of vol firefighter go into the grocery store flip flops on and 511 pants. Not cool
I've been a volunteer for 23 years on a 100% volunteer department in Texas. The nearest paid service is 26 miles away. What would you suggest we do? Call the paid guys and wait 30 minutes for a response? I think not. The fires in Texas have been brutal this year and we've received mutual aid to our area from the DFW metroplex a few times this year. We have to instruct them because they know nothing about wildland firefighting. We don't harass them. We help them and work with them throughout the
Im a paid firefighter and in my spare time I volunteer I see both sides of the argument. There are guys on my shift that rate volunteers a little above a meter maid. There are guys in my volley department that think there gods gift to firefighting and to hell with us union guys the way i see where all the same some made it on to a paiddepartment some didnt then theres that 10% that ruin it for both sides who believe there shit dont stink, thats my opinion as for the video above its funny.

I am glad to see you don't HAVE to be a volunteer to be a DOUCHE BAG Bob. BTW: I was a career firefighter and my union card didn't make me a better firefighter or a better person.
If this is meant to be a joke, than this was funny. But if you believe in this, it is BS. The fire service is one big family. We all do our job to help save lives, stabilize an incident, and protect the property of others. We are all in it together. We all fight for the same cause. We all respond to calls 24-7.
Volunteer FFs are TRUE public servants! They carry the spirit of the Roman Vigiles and the old firemen with them, from the days before they were paid. I'm trying to make firefighting a career, but I respect the VFDs, because they (more than anyone else) know that this job isn't about the money; it's about serving your community, and protecting it's citizen's.
What is really a true volunteer dept? where im from,a "true volunteer dept" barely exists, as they make runs on a volunteer basis per say, but are usually paid per hour per call, and still have to make a minimum amount of trainings and calls per quarter to remain on the active roster, and many go to the same fire and EMS academies that full time depts send their guys too.
@CyanoticFuture My dept in South Eastern Mass is fully volunteer. We don't get paid for anything unless its a brush fire on state owned land and details. This video is bull shit. My dept. covers two full time fire depts in surrounding towns, we even get more calls than one of them. We do have the same training as them, before they get on a dept, we go to the same academy. Some paid guys just have some false sense of notability because of their job title. Should be a brotherhood.
Yeah, the beginning was OK, but the rest of it no... This is a brotherhood, and the entire Volunteer world shouldn't be stereotyped just because of a portion of them aren't very bright... The rest of them work harder than the paid Firefighters sometimes and are obviously more devoted at some places because they do it WITHOUT PAY. In Georgia everyone receives the same training, the only difference is, the pay and some VFD's have a hard time getting up-to-date trucks and equipment.
Because a volunteer is a volunteer he has the duty to be better than a pro, because he wants to be there on the top of his job. Nothing forces him to come to the station and respond, so if he comes he must act better than a pro.
I'm volunteer EMT in Europe, and I find your video quite childish and disrespectful for people who, instead of doing things only for themselves during their spare time, act for the sake of others.
In my country, pro's are very happy to see us arriving at the station.
lulz. so i guess the maitenence meetings every monday night are just figments of my imagineation. i guess thae ifsac seals with my name on them that i busted my hump for arent for me. too bad a lot of unions (and union minded paid firefighters) dont respect vols. bc we dont contribute to the union. good thing most paid firefighters still apreciate us.
these videos are stupid. i am on a paid department and i think that the volunteers are vital. trust me...if your house is on fire you will be glad to see any firefighter show up. there are idiots in all departments but most of us know what the hell we are doing. firefighter kick ass.
Some paid firefighters simply do this job for the paycheck and a fancy little IAFF sticker, some paid do this because they love it and they love making a difference. Some volunteers do it to get a sticker, and have ZERO understanding of what they're doing. Some volunteers have more time and experience in than many firefighters that i know (including myself) and love firefighting whole-heartedly.
I say this as a card carrying member of the IAFF and a Volunteer Firefighter
This video is offensive for me. I have my NPQ1, my EMT-I, and I volunteer. I have a fulltime job that works me about 50 hours a week on salary. I go on calls when I can (with no compensation, I do not get paid per call or for being a volunteer, I spend my money to do this) so when I respond on three calls in one night I sacrifice a lot in my personal, family, and work life. If you have folks like that at your station its time to get new personnel
At one point in time I was paid at one dept as an EMT and a volley at another while I also was on the medical staff at a race track, (that's a whole other catagory!) What it all comes down to (but doesn't) is were all there for the same reason, someone somewhere dialed 911 for a reason. They need our help, not the bullshit politics. After 20+ years as a medic I've walked away from it because of the BS.
Typical Union Mentality. The bottom line is Paid Firefighters don't like volunteers because the more we do it for free, the less valuable you are. Too much time on your hands. Brother my ass, you guys would slit each others throats for O.T.
@tjalessi Nope not really.... we don't like you because you almost kill us regularly and are losers in your real life so you want to pretend to be something your not. I really hate when a scumbag delivery guy is it at my favorite bar and tries to pick up girls by saying he is a "hero" and a firefighter. When he is really an exterior fireman. I like to go hunting and shoot a gun. But that doesn't make me a navy seal when I put on camo. I think most of you retards need a safer hobby
@bobsirebob If this is true, then over 75% of the USA would be destroyed. Over 75% of fire departments in the US are all volunteer. Plus, at the fire academy I went to, all of the instructors are paid firefighters. So, bashing us is, in turn, bashing your own kind. Do research before trolling next time.
@Miroshinen yeah 75% of the usa is geographically covered by volunteers retard... who cares if idiot volunteers cover most of montana. 65% of the pop. is covered by paid firefighters...ie most ppl. in the USA. And who gives a shit if where you got your bullshit training from was by paid firefighters. They make it easy for you idiots to make money Let me ask you this, did anyone get kicked out of you useless "fire academy" because they couldnt do push ups or run a mile in a certain time?
@agavegrove Where i volunteer there is no law pertaining to the training of firefighters. It varies from department to department. In my department, we go to the county fire academy for 4 firefighter modules. We also don't have to maintain CEs if we are not EMTs (which I am).
@Miroshinen Yes actually. People have been dropped for being physically unfit. They couldn't do what was required of them and they couldn't continue the program until they did. Therefore, they were dropped.
I'm a vol. and I don't care if you're paid or not you're still a firefighter. You still have a job to do when you answer that call. If it's your career that's awesome, congrats! If you're a vol. that's awesome too. We are there to do the same job and we are all brothers and sisters, so stay safe!
@KVHCprobie - In our state you have to go to school, maintain CE hours (fire and EMS), and go through a rigorous hiring process to be a paid FF. To be a volunteer you fill out an application and start showing up to stuff. Big difference.
@agavegrove at my station and most of the one's around me we do not just fill out a piece of paper and show up. I'll give it to you for the ems training, we do not have to have it yet most of do. We can not just start doing stuff as soon as we get voted in either, we have to go through state training at either an academy or county places. We have to maintain enough training hours each year also. I understand you guys have more to do to be a firefighter, but we have have to work a regular job too
@KVHCprobie Glad your state/station has some standards. That's why started "In our state...." Speaking only for here, where there is a difference between vol and paid.
@agavegrove The way I see it is we are all in it together paid or not, we are there for one reason to help out our fellow community members and country. We are brothers and sisters there to make a difference.
As a disclaimer... I was a vol too, before I went paid. I know the mentality for both sides of the fence. I understand the having to work/go to school while volunteering.
@agavegrove The entire reason I want to volunteer in my combined department, is because I'm a college student, and there are just so many things I want to do right now (ROTC, Majoring in Atmospheric Science, and Minoring in Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering). Fortunately, if I become a vollie, I'll be trained the same as the career guys at the same academy, and the vol station I want to work at is where the swift water rescue team is based for Great Falls, VA (I love being around the water)
most all of the departments in my area are volunteer. those guys bust their butts! my bf is a firefighter. if a call goes out, he's there. volunteers have more passion. they are doing it because they WANT to. not because they get a paycheck. not saying paid ff's don't like their job. the guys i know would die trying to save someone.
im a vol.. and thats shits fuckin funny... needless to say.. when ur shit burns down.. we still show... would much rather have an experanced paid FF vs vol... but in small towns like mine... what ya see is what ya get.. so plese give at the next pancake breakfast,,,,lmfao.. we sure could use a new pumper..
I am a vol. firefighter and i fire one have been on fires where a paid dept. has been called and we had to show them how to do things like drafting with there truck. im just a vol. why should I know how to do things with a "professional" firefighters equipment. Sounds to me like these firefighters need to get off there high horses and just accept that a person might have a career that they like to do , but they still also like to help people and fight fires in there spare time
i understand the ballbusting, but still we are all a brotherhood. why can we just seem to get along. sure the paid departments have higher training but in the end we are out here to help people. thats what this job is all about. right?
