@TDSViper - dude, not a "tank". Its a self propelled field artillery piece. Just being nice :) Redlegs get a bit touchy when we get mixed up with the "spam in a can"...I mean tankers. ;)
I don't need your civil war It feeds the rich while it buries the poor Your power hungry sellin' soldiers In a human grocery store Ain't that fresh And I don't need your civil war I don't need your civil war I don't need your civil war Your power hungry sellin' soldiers In a human grocery store Ain't that fresh I don't need your civil war I don't need one more war
The army took 1 1/2 yr of my life, but somehow this vid gets me nostalgic... I served with a battery of 4 of these 'good old 8-inchers', as a surveyor / fwrd observer, pre gps-era... a rather cushy job compared to that of the guncrews... determining the position of the battery in pitchdark with the help of tiny aiming-lights no brighter than burning cigarette-ends... the whizzing of 200-pndrs flying over my head near the target-area... happy days ;-)
ok boys lets all not forget our basic cannon ers school, yes we also called them guns but we all no the difference, m y battery was the last one in the corp in the eighties to fire the last 175 rds out at 29 palms brought us from leujune to fire when i got too nc we were half 175 and half 8 in. semper fi.....
Occasionally bug guns are used in that function...Patton did it to Rommel in a pass in Africa. My uncle in Vietnam claims to have direct fired into viet cong concentrations overrunning the wire. The infantrymans guide to urban combat (FM 90-10-1) also talks about direct fire artillery use in urban operations for rendering buildings clear.
the good old days with 3rd 175 guns at 29plams M.C.B back in1971 to 1973 the old 175mm and 8 inch. I can back to 29 stump in late 1980,s they becoming part of history to the crops. over 20 years in big guns and love it,
1973, MOS 13B40 Gunner. The M110, at that time represented the largest gun in the US Army (8 inch diameter). The average HE/WP round weighed over 200 pounds and depending on powder choices (white versus green) could deliver an HE round to a distance of 13 plus miles, dropping the round within the diameter of a 55 gallon drum. The nuclear round weighed a bit more, rather impressive round, zlmost pretty but had a loss in maximum distance. So be sure to dig your foxhole prior to firing.
This self propelled Houwitzer shoots 65Kg grenades,of which 30-40 Kg can be explosives. The grenades can be set to explode before, on impact,or some nano seconds after impact. The grenades are NOT rocket assisted, but are launched by the explosion of bags of high explosives, inserted into the barrel after the grenadeinserted. The range is 36Km on 3 bags of explosives. Any hit in a 10 meter radius is considered bullseye.I have seen concrete blocks reduced to pebbles when hit 15 meter wide.
I spend many hours riding, shooting, but mostly cleaning and maintaining this beast. 175mm 65Kg shells. We managed about 1 shell every 80 seconds, with a crew of 3 on board and 3 on the ground.
No. An RPG relies on the rocket as the primary propulsion. As I understand it, the main benefit of a rocket assisted projectile is better aerodynamics. As the round moves through the air, air enters back into the vacum created behind the round like the wake right behind a motorboat. Rocket assistance (as I understand it) comes in the form of a rocket in the back of the round that forms a jet that fills up this empty space behind the round so the air doesn't come rushing back in.
You are partially correct. However the rocket assist also gives the round added propulsion increasing it's range almost 6km. The rocket motor fires at the top of the trajectory and boost the velocity another 200 - 300 m/s when the round reaches the slowest point in its flight.

It looks like the Soviet "Pion" but it's shorter and weaker!! Pion is probably most powerful artillery on wheels.

This video actually shows a Dutch M110A2 stationed at Tonnet army base in 't Harde.
The M110A2 203mm was still in use with Dutch armed forces up until the early 90's
I was from 88/6 and trained as commander on one.
