I watched an interview in his Senate office which in fact is a huge library stuffed with books floor to ceiling. He looked at the interviewer and said( I paraphrase) I take my job as a U.S. Senator very seriously and as a statesman I strongly believe in a broad range of knowledge to assist in marking a vote on the Senate floor. He went on saying you see these books ?, he paused then said I've read every one of them several times and paused, I've also read the entire encyclopedia. The man was real.
I'm glad to see this nigger finally forced out of the senate. This was a piece of shit, who needed to be dethrowned. Now we just have to get rid of alot more piece of shit senators, from both of the party's. There may be alot of things that he did, that others would say were good deeds. However, this man was in office during a time when, our country has went down the tubes into hell. The entire 50 year period he was in office, is the same time period that our country fell from grace. FUCK HIM
Its so weird to see this guy....in his youth I would have hated him....but its astounding to see a guy that old that is not only still sharp of wit, but is capable of seeing past his previous prejudice's and is a better senator than the majority (in my opinion)
If Obama, Pelosi and Biden were to all go down in a plane crash, he would be your President. Show some respect because the world is a funny place and you never know what could happen.
It never ceases to amaze me that black liberals will overlook Sheets's past, then mention Trent Lott, who only said something that could POSSIBLY be construed as racist. Sheets was not just in the Klan, he was a recruiter of 100's of people for the Klan and did not disavow the Klan nearly as early as he claimed. He was still referring to blacks as "specimens of the wild" at least 4 years after he claimed to disavow the Klan.
Womanimalm, nobody condones this man's past. Most, if not all of us, have done things in our pasts that we aren't proud of. It's said, however, that Senator Byrd had a lot of rethinking to do after his grandson was killed in an accident in 1982. The loss of his grandson affected him in such a way and he came to realize that black families love their children just as much as white families do. That may sound silly to us here, but the times that he grew up in were very different from our own.
Usually when people grow up a certain way, their "values" are so deeply enrooted in them that nothing's going to change their mind no matter what. The fact that he was willing to rethink his beliefs, especially at such a late age, is extremely rare and says a lot. Today, he has endorsed Senator Barack Obama, believing him to be a wise and honorable man and the candidate with the best possible chance of cleaning the disastrous mess made by that baboon we call President.
The fact that so many members of the black community are willing to accept his apologies and forgive his past only goes to show how far we've come and that we're really coming together as one people. The silliness of "race" is getting weaker with time and the day will come when it exists only in the confines of history.
If you want to look at racist politicians of today, then how about the Bush family? In the 2000 election, several blacks were prevented from reaching the polls in Florida. The same thing happened in 2004, only it was Oregon that time. And how about New Orleans? So many black people were left to die on their rooftops. Mr. Bush is incompetent as it is, but I can't help but to think that he'd have tried at least a little bit harder if it was thousands of white people trapped there, instead.

he has no business in congress, he's been there too long and he is too old. is he that broke that he can't retire? America, take back your country and clean both houses of congress. vote independent!
What absolutely kills me is that this man's rambling, along with the same practices of many of his collegues, accomplishes NOTHING for this country. Every citizens should be downright PISSED OFF that this is how time is wasted in our Nation's Capitol when important backed-up legislation needs to be debated and voted on. PERIOD!
Perhaps many of you need to realize that he is 94. He left the KKK in his 20s. BIG HELLUVA DIFFERNECE!!! how many ppl have made dumb decisions when they were young? almost every1!!! Plus, I would prefer an old man who can hardly stand to a young man who can hardly think.
Point 1: Cannot a man, especially from his time, make a mistake? Be critical but not dogmatic.
Point 2: When people comment that he is "rambling" and just "talking," I worry that the notions of rhetoric and oratory are dead in the modern mind.
I'm 22 and I feel deeply the old ways, both bad and good, are going fast. And far worse than gone; ignored, misunderstood, and unintelligently mocked.

the bad thing about this old windbag is that he's joined by Kennedy, Kerry, Schumer, Reid, Boxer, Harkin, Feinstein, Biden... somebody please take him back to the Alzheimers unit
as a black man, i can forgive Robert Byrd for his participation in the KKK. He is a man of a wisdom who has shown his change of heart towards Afro-Americans and so fourth through the years, and he was just misled by a society that within the US was simply backwards and blinded by hatred. and the fact this man has opposed the Iraq War and has become moderate on several issues, his past dosen't bother me.
You can say anything you want, but it cannot change the fact that you joined KKK and attempted to boycott civil rights act from passing, I hope that he will defeated in 2012 by a Republican when Rudy Giuliani wins his second term.
He joined the KKK back when it was cool to do. In 2012 he wont be alive, he is 89 now. If you want to talk about racist senators look at Trent Lott and his favorite Strom Thurman. Robert Byrd has a had a pretty impressive public carrier since his days with the Klan. WV would elect a democratic replacement even if Rudy (and that is IF) gets elected because Byrd's legacy will pull the next democrat along in his coat tails.
The fact that he is former KKK cannot be changed, but what CAN be change is a person. Take a look at the "Senator Robert Byrd says 'white niggers' on TV" video (don't let the title fool you) on Youtube. Byrd has certainly changed. Some people don't realize the existence and prevalence of change. As long as time moves, change happens. In fact, change is probably the only thing that stays unchanged in the face of time.
Actually, Giuliani would have lost even worse than McCain...the conservative base would have stayed home because of his liberal positions on social issues.

Bullshit - Lott was appearing with racist groups well into the 90s, such as the CC
Byrd's sins were over 60 years ago.
Byrd is apologetic.
Lott and his pal, Jesse helms were not.
