You can blow as hard as you like and it will make a perfect arc, then return to shape. It is much faster than aluminum and won't fatigue, harden or change tone over time like "foils".
This is quite a convincing demonstration, one that I think is decisive, and bodes ominously for the competition in the higher end. It is the first real innovation in the microphone world in a very long time! JK
I was thinking this eve: what's Shure got to say about ribbons? That's how I rediscovered Crowley and Tripp (haven't been in the biz for a few years now) and the news that Shure's acquired you guys, Congrats!
Thanks - The ribbons in ribbon microphones are unlike magnetic tape or other magnetic, ferrous materials. Instead, the property of paramagnetism is used, which is inherent in conductors.
Try phantom power on your ribbon with a TRS plug, you will destroy your foil ribbon every time. Pushing the P-power button on a preamp does nothing. That's not the usual failure mode. "Foil" ribbons fail when connecting cables. Try that at your own risk - unless you have Roswellite. Of course there are other ways a ribbon can move like in the video - such as very near, or in, a kick drum or a wind blast. "Foils" get stretched and fail, regardless of how thick they are. Roswellite doesn't
How are they getting the ribbon to react like that? I have put phantom power on my ribbon mic and it did absolutely nothing to it; it works just as well as it ever did.
My guess is this stuff is a mylar/aluminum combination, like they use for sealing food (ketchup packets for example). I did some experiments a while back with the material poptarts come in. It worked, but wasn't ideal b/c of lack of corrugations. If that's what this stuff is, then it should be dirt cheap.
The response difference of Roswellite vs "foil" is undetectable. That is until you have a very high dynamic range source, then the Roswellite provides additional dynamic range over the spectrum. The transient response of Roswellite and all of the Crowley and Tripp mics is very sharp with little overshoot.
Nice motor :^>. How does the response of a Roswellite ribbon compare to a ribbon made from traditional material? I'm contemplating purchasing a pair of Coles 4038. Which Crowley and Tripp mics would compare favorably, and in what aspects would they differ(aside from being indestructible)?
Shure uses Roswellite in the KSM 313 and KSM 353

You do all realise what this matrial is don't you? This is the start of 'Disclosure'
This 'Intelligent' Metal is the prduct of back-engineering from Alien technology recovered in the 1950's which was taken to area 51 (Roswell)
Roswellite - Ribbon Technologies - come guys...it's screaming it at you!

Never mind, I figured it out - Shure has it.
Exclusive deal prolly smart thing for them to do

so where can I get some of this material. I have a busted ribbon just waiting for some roswellite...

You have not answered the question of where to buy this material though.

Will Shure be using Roswellite? I sure hope so.

That is amazing. How can carbon-based foil be magnetized?

Ubertar - Nice idea. Sorry though, not it.
I do like POPTARTS however. Making me hungry.

Any disruptive idea or technology that challenges the incumbents or obsoletes a tradition will always meet with some resistance. That's only natural.

Aside from being exceptionally durable, the differences are:
Won't change over time, so you get a consistent result.
Same or better transient response compared to "foils".
Much higher dynamic range, especially usable dynamic range in the lower registers
Higher output about the level of a good stage dynamic
Low noise, near theoretical noise limit for the terminal z.
Stronger shielding
In the case of Naked Eye, dual voicing.
Larger transformer w extended tops and double shield.
And no worries
