i think yeah they were laughing at her voice breaking...and when she said "clunk" she tried to show that her voice doesn't always crack or something...so she did it in a very low voice.

I didn't get what was so funny either...but I remember tv guide saying that was the best joke of the night...because the writing material was so bad. maybe everyone was laughing because that was unplanned and everyone was so nervous so the "clunk" broke the ice
