I found out by repeated tests that "Energizer"(tm) rechargeable AA batteries are light-years ahead of other brands. 2400 mhA. After charging the 2nd time battery lasted for a couple of weeks approx. equalling 1hr, maybe 2, of heavy usage. I think some rechargeables do not meet the specifications.
The non-rechargeables from Canon which came with the camera were OK, though not in the same league as fresh "Energizer" (tm) This is not an ad.
I've heard all this before about the battery life of this camera. I just don't get it, I use rechargeable batteries and they work fine, no different from other cameras, don't know what all the fuss is about.
I used Energizer & Kodak rechargeables... They've performed very well. during my 2-day trip to Chicago...... for 700+ pix of highest resolution and 30 min of video I had to change the pair only once.
you need rechargeable batteries, and the expensive ones too, because i have this camera, and I absolutely love it, but i agree 100% the batterie life SUCKS.Get the expensive batteries
All I hear about the camera is that it eats batteries, I use energizer rechargable 2450mAh batteries with it and I get loads of shots out of it, so much so I forget when the last time I changed them are. I can only assume that reviewers just use the cheap batteries
Can anyone tell me another camera that has the same picture quality as this but better battery life? I'm also looking at the price range of no more than 250 bucks
hey! i have a question, can u put automatic flash? or you have to do it yourself( i mean open the flash if u want it or put it down if not)? with rechargable batteries is it bad too? or it lasts? thanks!!
I have a SX100 and the manual says it's best to use lithium batteries in it. I'm not surprised the SX130 drains regular alkaline batteries that quickly.
I'm using the 'Energizer' lithiums with the SX130 and they've been in use for an hour or two each day for a week, so pretty good going there. I also have the duracell rechargeables which last for app the same time. If anyone has a problem with battery life, you should use these instead of alkalines..'they "don't cut the mustard"! :)
test shot: 160 no flash continuously + 20 with variable power flash + 5 mins video = a pair of AA 2050mAh batteries status still green (no low indicator yet)
Does anybody know how much can this camera last with some 2700 NI-MH rechargeable batteries? Or with some even biger capacity NI-MH rechargeable batteries?
thanks for the info.. i was going to get my girlfriend this for Christmas and thanks to you i wont because of the battery life.. it really is worth researching products :)
Mike, we need to know exactly which batteries you used here.
This camera is a high-drain device and 'needs' to be used in conjunction with rechargeable batteries. It's not 'fataly flawed', you simply used the wrong batteries!
Th SX130 is a beast of a camera for it's size! Awesome colourful and sharp photos with a gorgous video mode! A joy to use really!
@GuitarPlayerGeo I'm thinking of buying this camera after seeing sample photos from the review at steves- digicams dot com... The camera seems phenomenal for the price but photo samples at another site i visited (cameras dot co dot uk) show some blurring in indoor non-flash portrait shots... Have you experienced some blurring in similar circumstances?
@umaralansari I just used the camera indoors this evening and have to say the flash photos I took are as good as any other Canon model and to be honest, the shots are very clear and sharp...'no blurring whatsoever. You really won't go wrong buying this camera, it's as good as any out there at many times the price. I'm taking better shots than my friend who uses the Canon G12. The SX130 is sharper and better saturated, and the SX130 is a great price! :)
I haven't had any battery problems with my SX130. The Alkalines don't last as long as rechargeables, but I haven't had any of the batteries constantly dying problems.

I am deciding between this and the Samsung PL210! Must decide today. Have you reviewed the Samsung PL210? I like the Canon but I don't like the fact that it uses AA batteries. Thanks for reviewing and letting me know about 1/2 with 2 batteries. That is no good for me. It is for sale right now in Canada at Future Shop. Canon Powershot SX 130 IS is a very good camera for a low price. I bought one, too! And I like it! Never mind the battery life - I carry couple of rechargable NiMh batteries with me and the camera does just fine with it! Image quality is surprisingly good for a comact class camera. I also do like the HD video function in it . I even shot a short music video with my SX 130 IS
Hey I'm intending to buy a camera for around € or $ 200,-. Do you think this is a good cam for me? It must have great image and video quality and this cam seems good enough for me. The only problem is the battery life, but I don't care if I have to carry 10 pairs of AA batteries with me :P Do you think if I should buy this cam or do you have any other alternatives for me?
Just go tit today, andbattery life is really great so i don't know what was wrong with the camera you had. I put almost dead batteries in it and got about an hour of shooting time. I'm satisfied:)
the truth is i got this camera a two weeks ago.. i use sanyo eneloop batteries and its very good in pictures specially in videos. with sanyo eneloop rechargable batteries i can use this cam for 2days. then i've got a extra 2 batteries. those batteries charge full for 2hrs only.. well i recommend u to use that. goodluck.!
I have the SX100 camera which is an older version of this camera. When buying batteries do not use alkaline. The reviewer is probably using alkaline. @GriseOmbre Thanks!!!!!!!! I do really thank you.. Tomorrow I'm gonna get those batteries you told me, and I'll follow all the advices you gave me for a best performance of my beautiful new canon camera.. =) Thanks again! Take care..bye
@GriseOmbre Hi, may I ask you something, I just bought this camera and I would like to know the batt AA you are talking about.. can you tell me the brand please? I'd really appreciate your help.. Thanks in advance
ok, I bought those ENELOOP bateries. and they are lasting FOREVER with this camera!! Really... I have made 3 15 minute videos, shot hundreds of photos, and uploaded it all to the computer, and it still isnt even showing low battery!!!!
IF YOU HAVE THIS CAMERA, BUY SANYO ENELOOP BATTERIES!! I recommend it 100%!!!!
@rogerpenna is this really true? i was going to get it for making short films and building a photography book but then i stopped coz of what i heard about the battery. would eneloop 2500mAh allow me to shoot short films in 720p then?
i know i have this camera and i use rechargeables (energizer) i have 4 batteries, and i can shoot alllll day and still be on the same two that i started with.. so im not sure what this guy is talking about but i have had no complaints! :) happy shooting!
@gpstar46 Really?? Wow...thanx for adding that. I'm really considering buying it. Sick of not having a digital camera like everybody and their mama. And I have a old Cannon, which I love but can't use it like I would like to because it's older and not digital so. Thanx!! I think I might just get it now :)
can somebody please tell me what's the difference between normal AA batteries and superior quality AA's? (number of photos for normal and superior quality batteries please)
Does anyone know why i'm having problems putting the videos onto my computer? They just don't read correctly. Or only the sound works. I use windows vista.
I use lithium batteries and they last much longer than the rechargeables. You can own and re-use rechargeables for longer but what would you rather have, batteries you can own longer or the ability to shoot longer without changing batteries?
The Canon Powershot SX1 IS has the same battery problem. It runs very short on four AA Alkaline batteries or normal Ni-MH. (depending om the operating temperature, between 25 and 50 photo's or 2-10 minutes film). This was not acceptable. Now I use Sanyo-Eneloop and GP-Recyco (Ni-MH with low impedance and low self-discharging). Shooting 200 photo's or 1 our film is no longer a problem (more than 16 GB). These rechargeables are also the solution for my Panasonic. Comparable with Energizer?
@DKtracks There are not many programs that can handle .MOV files very good. I have tried many . The best performance I get with Magix. Cutting is done very fast on my camera SX1. For editing sound I use Magix Sound Cleaning Lab, works great, costs €50,- (See my modified movies on Youtube "Euterpe Emmen") Magix also has video editing software for HD movies, but has less audio-options. You can download a free-trial version first.
If you use the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries, you will get an amazing amount of time from this camera. I used this camera for 30 minutes and the ONLY issue I ran into was that the HD videos filled up my memory card. No biggie, just get a bigger card. The camera's fine.
This camera is great, all it needs is some good rechargeable batteries. Something tells me that this guy jumps the gun on his reviews or he has vested interest in another camera company.
@wileericks I spend a lot of quality time with every gadget I test. No bias at all--in fact Canon has some of the best cameras on the market in my experience.
@infosyncvideos but on the battery comment, he is really right. While the camera does consume regular batteries in a way that alkaline batteries is just not an option for it, it works perfectly well with NiMH AA batteries and have very acceptable battery life when used with them, even better than some cameras that use smaller custom sized rechargeable batteries.
@iLittleSuzie It does not have a memory card supplied (you have to go buy your own), and it does have a date stamp on the photos; however you can change it so that there isn't one. I'm not sure about the 1080p HD , I think it runs up to 720p HD.
Hi! I have this camera from 1 year. I bought rechargeable batteries VARTA. It is working great. Once I make 1230 photos for one day. Over 8 hours working. Great camera! And when battery finished just put inside another pair, and continue shooting, I like it!
i have the canon sx120 and once i encountered the battery problem(about 10 mins of recording before they started to die) i bought energizer rechargable batteries and those last about 2 1/2 hours recording before dying.
wow. best. review. EVER! thank you so much, i was considering buying this camera today too.....well, onto keep looking.
if you could help me out too. im looking for a good vlogging camera,
shoots 720 and no more than $300 preferrably a Canon unless you can convince me otherwise, i use Windows Movie Maker to edit, so if you kno of any cameras that come out in a a compatible format for WMM such as MP4, AVI, etc etc i would greatly appreciate any info
dear member i am planning to buy this canon 130 is , but i am very much confused about buying it, because of the battery problems which all members discussed about it, is there any solution to battery problem as i want to use this camera mainly for video purpose. dear member kindly guide me - thanks
@Sripartha2 There are bozos that use disposable alkaline or lithium (not lith ion) AAs with this camera. There is no such thing as lithium-ion AA batteries, only single-use lithium AA batteries. I have this camera, Use rechargeable Nimh batteries with this camera, preferably LSD/low self discharge (examples- Sanyo Eneloops or I have GP Recyko) and the battery life will be fine.
I have this camera for 5month, and I had the same problem with batteries. After two weeks I bought a nice set of Sony rechargeable batteries (2500mAh) whith their original charger. These batteries works great: 1-2h HD video capturing or 300-400 photos, 200 or more using flash. Before I used Duracel 2700 mAh, and they could not do longer than 30min HD video or taking 150 pictures. NB! Before buying rechargeable batteries, look to producing date, if batteries are year or older, don't buy them!
Of all the point & shoot camera reviews I've seen, your review is the best.. You tell us what we want to know and waste no time doing it. You also HOLD the camera in your hands which tells me alot without saying a thing. Also appreciate you getting straight to the point about the battery-drain since some of us newbies (or us old school SLR camera folks who never used batteries for their cameras) know squat about rechargeables. But most of all, you speak my language fluently.
I got halve hour battery life with the cheap batteries that come in the box. But with some decent rechargeable batteries the camera literally lasted all day. Maybe next time you should at least mention how good the batteries were you used.
The problem with the battery life can be lessened if you opt to use high-capacity rechargeable batteries. If you're gonna be using it a lot though, you gotta carry more than 2 sets.
Hi This is a little off subject but do you know what video editor you can edit your videos from this camera with? It does not let me edit with windows movie maker and I tried one true media and even though the videos are HD they come out REALLY blurry I need to edit my videos for YouTube
i just got this camara as well, and while it takes great pictures--yes, the battery life sucks. however, can't we charge it using the USB port as well?
I bought this camera about a week ago, and I am VERY IMPRESSED with the pictures quality. Very clear, crisp images. the only problem is the speed with which it consumes the batteries. I am using 1200 mAh rechargeable batteries, so it helps to some extent. I would recommend this camera for sure.
I got this camera today! (: I'm in love with it!! (: But I do agree on the battery life; I put new ones in not to long ago because I was testing out the video quality and it wasn't long enough :P But other than that, GREAT CAMERA! :D
the video is awesome, and battery life isn't too much of a problem- get rechargeable ones! however, i'm really disappointed with the image quality. i wouldn't recommend this!
just tun the quick view off and use the eye lends to take pics don't rely on the quick view to take the pic there battery problem solved worked for me.
@infosyncvideos I'm planning to buy a camera this weekend and I would appreciate if you could tell me which one is better in your opinion? This Canonn Powershot SX130 IS or the Nikon Coolpix L110? Hope you can answer soon!
The sx130 IS is an excellent camera for the price, especially considering you can currently get it for $150 at best buy.
I can get over 200 shots and 30 minutes of video with a set of eneloop rechargeables. All powershots eat cheap batteries. I'm coming from an A710is which did the same thing-30 shots with cheapies--250+ with good batteries.
Great for $
With a good set of rechargeables this camera rocks...and for $150 on sale you're not going to get a better camera for the price.

Use proper batteries. My Pentax DSLR does about 100-150 shots with good alkaline batteries. With eneloops it's easily more than 700 (2 4 GB SD cards is the maximum I shoot a day). Regular rechargeable would give me about 300, perhaps 400 (that is with 2700 mAh ones etc.). I've heard others say they get about 350 or so with good rechargeables with this Canon. Which is ok... not great, but it should be enough. Just make sure you carry 2 spare eneloops.
Nice idea is to use CHDK with this cam. It's still in alpha stage, but I'm using it everyday and have no problems. It gives your camera a new spitit:)
you'll find a recent build of CHDK for this camera. Just unzip it and copy to your card. You have to read more on this thread, to know more about CHDK:) But it's very good software, I'm using everyday (almost every shot;p).
@aarondutt eneloop. Just buy eneloops. You could also buy similar ones from GP, Sony, etc., but eneloops shouldn't cost more with some searching, and they do last a very very long time. Don't get the lite version, those are meant for remote controls. There are new high performance ones now, but I don't know how good they are. The regular ones are bloody brilliant though, they last at least 800-900 shots with my Pentax DSLR (usually Alkaline 100, NiMH 300).
i bought this camera and its great!!!! i got energizer rechargeables and they last a VERY long time between chargeing, its amazing, love it to death, glad I bought it
@MySwtTonia Do you know how long it lasted with rechargeable batteries? I am thinking about getting this camera and love it so much Minus the battery part.
I have a movie recorded from car with this camera if you want to see. Check my channel.

ok, I bought those ENELOOP bateries. and they are lasting FOREVER with this camera!! Really... I have made 3 15 minute videos, shot hundreds of photos, and uploaded it all to the computer, and it still isnt even showing low battery!!!!
IF YOU HAVE THIS CAMERA, BUY SANYO ENELOOP BATTERIES!! I recommend it 100%!!!!
rogerpenna 7 months ago

Does anyone know why i'm having problems putting the videos onto my computer? They just don't read correctly. Or only the sound works. I use windows vista.
thexmarksmyheart 7 months ago
I use lithium batteries and they last much longer than the rechargeables. You can own and re-use rechargeables for longer but what would you rather have, batteries you can own longer or the ability to shoot longer without changing batteries?

Canon PowerShot SX130 IS or Fuji FinePix s2950 ?
which one is better, and why?
Hubert8910 7 months ago
@ Mike from infosyncvideos : Try and run this cam on Eneloops and i am sure you'll say that this is the best bet ever, given its price.
I am using this cam with Eneloop batteries for quiet some time and am more than happy with its performance
sumitsingh2301 8 months ago
I also use varta recharcghable batteries and they last long enough to take all the pics and vids I want.
meatpie29 8 months ago
The Canon Powershot SX1 IS has the same battery problem. It runs very short on four AA Alkaline batteries or normal Ni-MH. (depending om the operating temperature, between 25 and 50 photo's or 2-10 minutes film). This was not acceptable. Now I use Sanyo-Eneloop and GP-Recyco (Ni-MH with low impedance and low self-discharging). Shooting 200 photo's or 1 our film is no longer a problem (more than 16 GB). These rechargeables are also the solution for my Panasonic. Comparable with Energizer?

Does anybody has any idea, how to edit the videos made with this camera?
Windows Movie Maker can not handle it... Convert the files does create an unacceptable quality...
Please tell mit with what you can edit the videos :( I only want to cut and get a few simple effects...
DKtracks 8 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@DKtracks There are not many programs that can handle .MOV files very good.

Ryuuie 8 months ago
can the battery problem be solved? By putting in other batteries?
gebboo 8 months ago
This camera is great, all it needs is some good rechargeable batteries. Something tells me that this guy jumps the gun on his reviews or he has vested interest in another camera company.

@wileericks I spend a lot of quality time with every gadget I test. No bias at all--in fact Canon has some of the best cameras on the market in my experience.
infosyncvideos 8 months ago 7
@infosyncvideos but on the battery comment, he is really right. While the camera does consume regular batteries in a way that alkaline batteries is just not an option for it, it works perfectly well with NiMH AA batteries and have very acceptable battery life when used with them, even better than some cameras that use smaller custom sized rechargeable batteries.

@wileericks why good batteries man ? They fall down quickly ? Tell me please, becouse tomorrow i`m gonna buy Canon SX130 ...

@iLittleSuzie It does not have a memory card supplied (you have to go buy your own), and it does have a date stamp on the photos; however you can change it so that there isn't one. I'm not sure about the 1080p HD , I think it runs up to 720p HD.

Sripartha2 9 months ago
@Sripartha2 There are bozos that use disposable alkaline or lithium (not lith ion) AAs with this camera. There is no such thing as lithium-ion AA batteries, only single-use lithium AA batteries. I have this camera, Use rechargeable Nimh batteries with this camera, preferably LSD/low self discharge (examples- Sanyo Eneloops or I have GP Recyko) and the battery life will be fine.
ILykToDoDuhDrifting 9 months ago
I have this camera for 5month, and I had the same problem with batteries. After two weeks I bought a nice set of Sony rechargeable batteries (2500mAh) whith their original charger. These batteries works great: 1-2h HD video capturing or 300-400 photos, 200 or more using flash. Before I used Duracel 2700 mAh, and they could not do longer than 30min HD video or taking 150 pictures. NB! Before buying rechargeable batteries, look to producing date, if batteries are year or older, don't buy them!
kappa2x2 9 months ago
Of all the point & shoot camera reviews I've seen, your review is the best.. You tell us what we want to know and waste no time doing it. You also HOLD the camera in your hands which tells me alot without saying a thing. Also appreciate you getting straight to the point about the battery-drain since some of us newbies (or us old school SLR camera folks who never used batteries for their cameras) know squat about rechargeables. But most of all, you speak my language fluently.
leescatsanddog 9 months ago
I got halve hour battery life with the cheap batteries that come in the box. But with some decent rechargeable batteries the camera literally lasted all day. Maybe next time you should at least mention how good the batteries were you used.
drakomytaka599 9 months ago 2
what about rechargable batteries???
pinkninjaSDR 9 months ago
The problem with the battery life can be lessened if you opt to use high-capacity rechargeable batteries. If you're gonna be using it a lot though, you gotta carry more than 2 sets.

i just got this camara as well, and while it takes great pictures--yes, the battery life sucks. however, can't we charge it using the USB port as well?
karmaapolice 10 months ago
I bought this camera about a week ago, and I am VERY IMPRESSED with the pictures quality. Very clear, crisp images. the only problem is the speed with which it consumes the batteries. I am using 1200 mAh rechargeable batteries, so it helps to some extent. I would recommend this camera for sure.

I have to decide wether I buy this camera or the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5...
Video Quality is very important for me... Sony has 1080p and this one 720p...
but for the rest those 2 Cameras seem very similar... Wich one does make better Videos/pictures? Any suggestions?

@infosyncvideos I'm planning to buy a camera this weekend and I would appreciate if you could tell me which one is better in your opinion? This Canonn Powershot SX130 IS or the Nikon Coolpix L110? Hope you can answer soon!
xjulitox 10 months ago
@WooScore

@chamarasugar Sure! At this thread on the forum:
chdk . setepontos . com/index.php ? topic=5691.0
(remove a spaces)
you'll find a recent build of CHDK for this camera. Just unzip it and copy to your card. You have to read more on this thread, to know more about CHDK:) But it's very good software, I'm using everyday (almost every shot;p).

What rechargeable batteries do you recommend?
aarondutt 11 months ago
@aarondutt eneloop. Just buy eneloops. You could also buy similar ones from GP, Sony, etc., but eneloops shouldn't cost more with some searching, and they do last a very very long time. Don't get the lite version, those are meant for remote controls. There are new high performance ones now, but I don't know how good they are. The regular ones are bloody brilliant though, they last at least 800-900 shots with my Pentax DSLR (usually Alkaline 100, NiMH 300).
