This song was originally recorded for a Coca Cola commercial, the lyrics were all intentionally geared towards making money for a corporation, and then re-released to make more money. And this was 1973. The Vietnam war was finally starting to wind down and Nixon was involved in the Watergate scandal. Not better, not innocent.

I am sure we were led to believe that the song had somehow come first. Well, as you point out, it was all a fake. The commercial was cashing in on anti-war feeling to sell Coca-Cola, after all. There never was a lovely song about peace and harmony. It was just an adaptation of an advertising jingle.
