The late 60's saw a balance, in idealism, emerge. Essential, at the time. And necessary. The message was....love. Thanks, Crosby, Stills, Nash and neil Young.
@ReevesPete I don't understand. How did they betray the Greatest Generation: the young men who 100 years earlier reunited a fractured nation and ended the horrific institution of slavery in this country?
In this period in America, young people and some sympathetic older people were in open rebellion against authority. The 1950s were oppressive and young people had had enough. There was the draft, the Korean and Vietnam war, censorship in movies and music and people had to look and act a certain way to be accepted and get a job. And so you had young people rebelling, playing wild music, growing their hair, wearing what they wanted and doing what ever they wanted. These times will return...
when a think about the post oil society....just remember the values and the principles of the real hippies.....maybe the 69´ are a prophecy about the future days.
According to Neil Young's biography he was definitely at Woodstock, but he talks about being there with Buffalo Springfield, which Stephen Stills was also in. I guess they all just were jammin' together!
@nitramtuorp Yes, I totally agree. It was the Golden Age of Music. I was in the 11th grade on the verge of becoming a high school senior. What a great time it was!!!
Such a cool song.. They're the best in this particular album.. it's the one that looks like a cartoon on the front.. has Ohio on it as well..really great music. If I were old enough ot have been at Woodstock I bet that would have been cool...
Unless my eyes and ears where decieving me, Neil Young was at Woodstock with the rest of us. This song is beautiful, and true to form of all of that were there, and a way of life we need back in America, and around the world as a matter of fact.
CSN, one of the true, and I mean the REALLY TRUE sounds of the '60's. This is the style of music that was heard more than all the heavy stuff that everyone today thinks represents the '60's. Not so, I remember it so well.
The folks that claim that Neil Young was NOT at Woodstock are WRONG. He was there, out of the spotlight, in the background.. He just didnt want to be filmed..
Far from being about hippy peace and love, this song is about giving up on ideals and retreating into the inner world of drugs and hedonism. Although it's a great song, Jackson Browne was driven to strongly rebuke this abandonment of idealism in his song "For Everyman".
Album: Crosby, Stills & Nash Released: 1969. This song was written by Crosby, Stills & Nash. Young was not at Woodstock in 1969. I've seen mistakes on Wiki, CD's and yes, even I make mistakes.
@TheBacmaster OH YES NEIL YOUNG WAS THERE AT WOODSTOCK IN 1969.
He refused to allow himself to be on video tape feeling in was some sort of commercialism of his music. Better look up Stills and Young Mr. Soul Woodstock 1969 because it is here on You Tube. And Neil is singing and playing, shown briefly at the very beginning and very clear at the 3:00 minute mark.
@TheBacmaster The song was also written by Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane, but not by Nash. It was written when they all were playing in Jefferson airplane and, again, Nash was not there. But Jerry Garcia played with them.
@TheBacmaster Sorry but you are incorrect. Neil Young was absolutely at Woodstock. There is video of him there. I have seen it. He may not have sung on all the songs they did that night. He joined them mid-set. I'm not sure if he is on this song, but I think he is. There is also audio of him speaking there.
@Topkat311 Thank you for the correction, however I only get my information from Wiki. Like I mentioned above to brady1574, Wiki makes many mistakes. That particular message was copied from another site and are not my words. Anyhow, thanks for making it public for other viewers to read. I was only 11, so I never attended Woodstock nor have I seen any video you spoke of.
@TheBacmaster I looked further into it. Seems Neil wasn't on the acoustic set, but played the electric set with them. "Sea of Madness" is his song they did. He didn't want to be photographed & told photogs, he would hit them with his guitar if they took pics of him.
@Topkat311 I read somewhere that Neil, Jimi Hendrix, and a few other people with them got behind schedule somehow and were late getting to the concert, so Hendrix ended up borrowing someone's truck at the airport and drove there with Neil.
This song invites the spirit of solemn HOPE for A REALISTIC WORLD PEACE by way of collectively working together for the common good...love thy neighbor as you would love yourself because the best is yet to come.... there are far more better days ahead for the world at large.....Allow for mutual respect for one another to rule the day.
How come the actual Woodstock version is not available on Youtube because of WMG, but the album version is? The live Woodstock version by CSNY is the best version of the song.
I was 9 when this song came out.. I have older bros.. so I listened to their music... love this song so full of peace... it is what we need today!!! to much anger in the world.. everybody around the world needs to listen to this song at least 5 times a day until they get it!!!!!
I was born in 74 , and typically this is not my genre of music , But I always come back to it because it reminds me of my mom when i was young if that makes any sense , she was a hippy !
1969. I was 21. At UT, Austin. Spent the 70's in SF/Marin County. Spent the 80's in the Virgin Islands. Back on the island of Kauai now for 9 years. Ran into Graham Nash awhile back at the vets. We talked dogs. Good guy. Fights for the environment, among other things. One of my favorite TV programs back in the early 60's was "Adventures in Paradise." Once, when Iwas in th USVI, I was on a 1907 Danish Schooner in the BVI wooden boat race. Aloha and Peace from Kauai.
@awesomeeras131 - I love this song too! I was young when this song came out but I do remember the times as bittersweet. I think we all want to believe that our youth signified something that no one else can and rightfully so, the 60's was a unique time in the country. Did people really love each other more then. It feels like we did. I always felt so hopeful about the future.
The live version from Woodstock is better (this isn't it) but the footage is nice... BTW that couple from the famous photo at the beginning is still together, they did an article on them recently.
Great song, great slideshow of this landmark event. Never tire of watching Woodstock performances, tributes and documentaries. 'Easy Rider' pic in there, as well...RIP Dennis Hopper (5/17/36 – 5/29/10).
