In any case, yes, there is such a thing as poetic license, but at a certain point, grammar distortion stops being poetic and just becomes poor writing. That line could have been written in a number of different ways that would have made a lot more sense.

It's not poor writing. Songs aren't always about making sense. Michael Jackson said many of his songs didn't mean anything, but he is still famous as crazy. We all know that part doesn't make sense (or at least we should) but the song is at it's best...it really doesn't matter.
