I have Asperger's. If I were in that sort of situation my anxiety would go up and I would start freaking out. I have enough trouble dealing with strangers on the phone. I am not sure I would be able to call 911 in the event of an accident.
@ReReShow80 Were did you get that from? To me it was a lot more that he couldn't comprehend quite what was happening. I think you watch too many bad films/programmes with bad actors in it.
The only thing I don't like about these is the exaggerated symptoms. I don't know anyone on the spectrum that would behave like this. The videos are great though.
I could see him not calling 911 right away. He has to absorb what just happened. Once the others that just came have taken over the situation, I think an AS person would be more likely to just sort of step out of it, not run covering their ears. And yes it would be overwhelming having people yell at you asking if or why you haven't called 911 yet.
This is a example of severe AS I would say. I know to call 911 if this happens and I have AS. This man here couldn't see the overall picture and looked at the little details instead and was focused on it. But it did look exaggerated.
having Aspergers Myself i can completly understand his perception of the world its like there shouting at him but there not he's just seeing it that way because he has never had the right traning skills on how to act in this situation no ones ever told him
Thats my old account. In response to that comment I'm autistic so no I'm not saying that to be cold hearted. The only times the world looks like that to me is when I'm on ketamine haha.
I can truly understand what the young man experiences since I do have Asperger Syndrome, since from his point of view and mine, a situation like this can be extremely distressing and so confusing that I wouldn't know what to do in this situation but to run. Although I do handle crowds very well and more likely I would help someone in a situation like this.
Asperger's is a condition id like to understand more. It must be difficult for people like him when others around him have no idea what it is he is suffering from. I know their not stupid people though, some can display how well educated they are.
I love how the asp man's point of view of the individuals around him show scary wide bulging eyes, especially when they shout at him. I can see how scary situations like this are for him.
The man was looking at the situation very logically. He was captivated by the sound of the bicycle wheel turning. This shows sensory overload when the people are talking to him, but it sounds like they are screaming. It can be very scary.
I have Asperger's and I have problems like this. Either I'll jump into the situation or I'll stare and do nothing. But when I have 3 people talking to me at once, there's trouble.
I taught high school and it was a disaster. I had no way of handling difficult situations. I wasn't diagnosed until after I gave it up.
Your a little bit like me. i have aspeger's as well and i sometimes feel like should i do nothing and walk away from a serouis accident which i eyewittnessed.
It kind of paints autistics/people with Asperger's Syndrome in a bad light. I mean, they may get distracted by sounds and sights in life-threatening situations, but they can be extremely compassionate exponents of humanitarian causes, too. Consider Temple Grandin and the cattle chute she invented to make animal slaughter more humane (if it can ever be regarded as such).
He's not being slow he's distress I'm guessing this one is showing coping with situations. From my view I think it was shock- distress situation. I don't know if that's true but it makes sense to me.
If I see someone injured and I see someone blankly aspying-out at the spectacle, I'm probably not going to worry about the guy with autism, because he's perfectly fine. I don't get the point of this commercial at all.
i took a course on first aid for some reason, so i would have stayed and helped. did you know that the more people there are the less likely it is that someone will help?
That's probably because you are only a mild part of ASD, like me. And you're right. Severely autistic people wouldn't know what to do in a situation like this - that is why people need to be more aware of their problem and find out what they could do to help them.
I agree. I wouldn't be the type to stand there either but I know that I wouldn't want to participate in the guy's rescue if every one else seemed to run to him. I would though if I was the only one around. I probably wouldn't know the street name to tell 911.
These ads make people with asperger's seem a lot "slower" than they really are. I have autism, and if this kind of thing happened to me, I wouldn't just sit and stare at the body, I would take off and run. Fast.
I can say almost the same thing about myself here, except instead of taking off and running away, I'd help the person or call an ambulance. Or maybe just shout for help.
if i was there despite my disabilty, i would've stay until help comes. if i had a cellphone w/ me, call 4 help. if a person means help, i have 2 make sure they're all right and get the help they need.
Well, there's a reason why it's called a "spectrum". Different people have different symptoms and issues. I personally would be more likely to stand there confused for a few moments before doing anything, and even if I did do anything, I would be confused as hell.
I have autism but if there was a guy unconscious I would still call a ambulance still...

What BS! They might as well show the Aspie stealing the guy's money.

I think this is exaggerated perhaps which is necessary to highlight the differences between NT and AS.
