I had a ticket to see McCoy Tyner last year, and I got the dates mixed up in my head and missed it. He is the last link to this great band, so hopefully I'll get to see him this year if he comes back.
This song is a response to the 16th Street baptist church bombing in which 4 young African American girls were blown up in 1963 by the KKK. May they rest in peace (along with John Coltrane.)
This is music that tells a story, share emotions, and meticulously orchestrates its sound. Why do people come to videos and post irrelevant commentary? I have to say it is typically from Americans (and those who behave like Americans).
ya im 16 ya i like some of the new music like party rock athem or sexy and i know it but jazz is something i love and well hopefully become skilled enough to play like sir coltrane here

@PietkaMS It makes you feel bad because it is a memorial or a tribute to the four little Black Girls killed while attending Sunday School in church on a Sunday morning in ALABAMA - by a bomb thrown by a racist twisted KKK idiot. So let the music, let John Coltrane help to soothe all our pain. Thank you John
just because you got a solo in your highschool jazz band, that doesnt make you a jazz aficionado. the mere fact your your friends dont like it doesnt make you more sophisticated, it makes you a hipster. you might bitch and argue now but in the future if you still like jazz, youll think back to this one day and think how stupid you were in your teenage years like the rest of us grownups do.
@HH444Ii think the fact you said this makes you more childish and immature than the people you're scolding.I believe that people should be able to like what they like without being judged by hateful individuals such as yourself. Twenty two others were injured. I think the somber tone of this tune is fitting for this ugly event in American history perpetrated by a bunch of cowards.
I don't prefer rock or screamo, jazz can come in many forms but they are mostly peaceful. As other people said before, pur newer generations will never understand this masterpiece.
@Unitoligist Disagree. I think the newer generations will return to the roots of music in a desperate attempt to purify the garbage currently being forced down their throats. One can only hope that they recognize it when it's presented, and that rebellion trumps the need to feel trendy.
Our newest generations will never understand why jazz is such a fantastic and sophisticated art form but we are the select few who still enjoy such a beautiful art like jazz
@jvwashere2 I feel like this is extremely unfair to those of our "new generation," such as myself (15 yrs old) that still actively listen to and play jazz at clubs on a regular basis. I do sadly agree that most of my generation will never understand it, but I think if this music got more exposure, it would become more popular.
then you like music. Most people and specially teens like pop tunes. I got nothign against pop but music can go further and this song is an example of that.
@saxpianobassman2090 Theres a select few stations - primarily am radio, that play real jazz & blues. I grew up (sorta) in CT, whet to old-school lookin dives in the basement of businesses/apartments, last I heard some group of "concerned parents" (people with too much free time who can't discipline their kids) was trying to get a law by that says anyone under 21 couldn't go into "that sort of place"
@MrBoognish007 sorry I ran out of room - I realize that some of these dive bars don't have an issue with serving minors or patrons' use of narcotics (heroin seems to remain the jazz drug of choice, not much has changed I guess), but I was there for the music, and if I played and sucked (happened quite regularly), I got props for trying and tips from the old timers, ultimately, thats motivation to keep playing, and if thats bad for America's youth than so is a crappy report card.
@saxpianobassman2090 I am also 15, it is very sad to see a decline in the quality in music. I am from a hick small town, I was told the other week i don't know anything about music cause i don't listen to eminem, and just today i asked someone if they knew who bob dylan was and was answered "No i don't listen to crappy music".
@saxpianobassman2090 Yes, I completely agree, seems that the record companies / promoters / media are not trying to have an influence in that way anymore, rather they react to what the people are listening already. However in Coltrane's time, it wasn't much a popular style anyway. The greats of today will also be remembered, keep an open ear ! ;)
@jvwashere2 That's an elitest statement. Every artform has its golden age. Jazz is no longer the popular music it once was. Its just the nature of things. Renaissance style paintings are also not as popular today. I didn't live in the 15th and 16th century but I still appreciate the great work of Leonardo and Michaelangelo, so there are kids today who will eventually discover the music of the Jazz age and its legends. But it won't be the same as living through that era as it was happening.
@bolder2009 true but the caliber of talent in music isn't the same. with jazz there was peer influence to play well. commercial music doesn't produce the same push. LMFAO is popular, Nicki Minaj is popular, that Peter Bjorn and John-ripoff song is popular.
@bolder2009 So I guess you would say Branford Marsalis, for instance, isn't doing anything new, just repeating what was already done, right? I'm so sorry, but you couldn't be more mistaken.
@RAYJENKTY ok so let me get this right. if theres no talent, lets see you post a vid of you playing the saxophone that apparently takes no talent to play. douchebag.
@RAYJENKTY What you've done there is you've confused a human with a monkey.
It's easily done, because they are evolutionarily related, both being primates. A handy key to tell the difference in future is that monkeys are the small hairy ones with tails, where as humans are taller, have large areas of bare skin, don't have tails, and can play the saxophone.
I never really sat down and listened to a jazz track, let alone the music of this man and band. I only decided to listen to it after reading the works of Cornel West. I can start to see, and hear, why jazz is so important, as a beautiful, hopeful response to the dangers and darknesses of life. West says he's "a jazz man in the life of the mind -- committed to keeping alive the flickering candles of intellectual humility, personal compassion and social hope in our barbaric century." I get it.
