I just picked up this exact deck today from Goodwill. VUs lit up but dead tape transport. I figured the belt simply slipped off the drive. I asked the cashier for a discount since it wasn't working. Got it for $6. Took it home, opened it up, fixed the belt. Playing my original Pixies tapes on it right now and it sounds DELICIOUS. I totally agree with you regarding analog meters. I don't care how retro-tech-nerdtastic it might sound: The only cure for digital doldrums is analog. U ROCK!

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this but you said it has a setting for Metal tapes (Type IV) which is incorrect. The 3rd setting is for FeCr (Type III, Ferrochrome). Based on what I have seen, it wasn't widely used past the mid-80's and generally Sony decks are known for having this setting in earlier decks.
