I was in college during the folk years. I remember going to my girlfriend's apartment, hoping her roommate was away.... That was '62. I graduated in Aug '63, and was told "if we don't get you in Oct. we'll get you in Nov." Hooray for the draft! I volunteered to go to Korea--and discovered that the ones who didn't went to 'Nam [1965]. But the folksongs bring back the time when I was ignorant of what would happen. Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
This is a beautiful song and every time I hear it, it touches my heart. I love this song and I enjoy this version as well as the ones by Ed Ames, Andy Williams, Patti Page and others.

Has there ever been a song like this that evokes such memories and emotion in all people? I don't think so. This song reminds me of singing around the fire while my brothers played there guitars and everyone sang. It also reminds me of my Grandfather, a very kind old southern gentleman. So sweet, it make you smell the air of summer and see the fireflies and children trying to catch them at the end of a lazy summers day....

Of course it's a brave new world now, and any kind of crap goes. I am sorry for you younger folks, I keep telling my way younger brother (by 20yrs) that he missed all the best music. He doesn't think so but you will never miss what you never had. Kinda sad.
What a soothing song -- also great to dance to, the slow waltz. It's so nice to remember the days of years gone by where terrorism, car bombs, airline hijacking, etc were still just words and not daily occurences. What has gone wrong with this world?
What a great song, and so pleasant to dance the waltz to this song with perfect tempo/beat. When dancing the waltz to this song, I can almost feel the nostalgia coming from even the women who are merely watching and listening. No current day song can match this one. Other songs like this for dancing are "Today", "Annie's Song", and "Last Waltz".

@slombardo101 No doubt there is sad n sweet memories in our life, this song just makes me so mellow and sad. There is alot of things to think about especially at this christmas eve, when I just spent it in my room facing the computer. Just feeling kinda lonely like no one seems to care. In fact we are not alone cos there are so many friends out there who do care, isn't it? Merry Christmas to u n people out there!! Be Happy!!!
My dear old dad is nearing the end of his Journey through this life. He's led a long & happy life. This song so captures the bitter-sweet feelings I'm going through as I remember all the good times we've had along the way, but that now it's time that I must say goodbye. My favorite version by the Brothers of this song is on the PBS DVD "This Land Is Your Land--The Folk Years". I haven't found it on YouTube. Try Netflix or eBay,
@HeinekenPete I hear you buddy. I lost my Mom very recently, and I remember when she was so full of life and always going. I have some fond memories of my childhood, and I have so many wonderful pictures of my Mom. She lived a long life though, and she's with Jesus now, and she's strong and whole again. I think of my childhood and her when I hear this song. I will lift up you and your family in prayer. God Bless.
@HeinekenPete I just came upon this thread, I am so sorry, especially if your dad has passed, but I must say, having read your post, you are a son that anyone would be proud of, your comment brought me to tears. I wish you peace.
@HeinekenPete I found your comment so very touching, I suspect that your dad has passed by now, please accept my condolences, and know that your sentiments would make any parent proud.
@jan906mp Good for you, and I'm very impressed! You keep listening to these Beautiful and timeless songs. You'll be glad you did as the years pass. These songs have deep meaning. I feel sorry for people who didn't get to grow up with beautiful songs like this one and countless others. This song is a gem.
@beautifulmusiclistnr thank you..Im not ashamed that I love oldies eventhough Im just 26 years old..Old songs have deep impact in my life..It always reminds me that life is simple yet full of abundance..
loreleiwagner did not say that she(he?) thought those older days were perfect. The 60s was a period with student riots and changes. it was also a time of creativity and change. It was those young men and women that asked for change. Today our young people care only about getting a good pay. There is no soul.
loreleiwagner, the 60s weren't all June Cleaver and Ward! Remember the riots, the burnings, the German Shepherds unleashed on people? I liked some of the nice things of back then, but it wasn't all La-La Land either.
Thanks for this post. It brings me back to my youth when we listen to this on a 33.5 speed turntable; HI-FI set (high-fidelity).. when everything is simple and oh! so mellow.......SIGH!!
I wasn't born yet when this song was created. I over the years had heard it from time to time & thought it to be kind of corny. However, I'm much older now & realize how creative & beautiful it is and I want thank you for reminding us of it & sharing it with all of us. Thanks again.
In these troubled times in the USA, it's nice to hear songs like this & remember how much more simple life was then, compared to today. In those days people seemed more innocent and were taught to use their talent & allowed to be creative. Today our schools do not teach proper etiquette, good morals and creativity is not allowed. Individualism is a thing of the past. Kids today are being dumb ed down & conditioned out of creativity. It is very sad we allow this to happen.
When I hear this song It does bring back alot of tender memories that I have left behind. I thing It does say what life should be like. I was just a younster when this was created. Our kids today need to slow down and injoy the little things before their gone. One day you look In the mirror and say wow, where did the good old days go. It seems just yesterday I was a boy. Then you look again and say wow time flew by. The song hits home for me In a very big way.
@loreleiwagner I am 20 now, I am going to college to be a teacher. But you are definitely right about how individualism is a thing of the past. They say it is all over the place but when you have Hannah Montanna dressing in $500 dollar dresses on the left and Justin Bieber with a $500 dollar hair cut on the right, it is kinda hard to believe. Also, I saw an interview, I think Jimmy Stewart said that there's no spontaneity in entertainment anymore entertainment now has such a formula.
@iw32 I am not a obama supporter but if I have to blame someone, it had to be american people themselves who embraced far left liberalism. I feel this country has been changing for worse in every aspect for last three decades. Isn't it ironic that we are moving towards socialism while china is moving towards capitalism?
@loreleiwagner I completely agree with you! They don't want kids to have critical thinking, banning books like "The Grapes of Wrath" and "1984". We are on a roller coaster heading downhill very fast! Who knew that when looking back at the sixties we would call those "the good old days"!!!!
This is definitively the very best perfomance of this beautiful ballad. Thank you so much for providing this Brothers Four classic to all of us. I tried to emulate this arrangement with two guitars and vocal (multi-track recording), but it's impossible to replicate their version. I'd love to hear your comment on my contribution (enter Blinkymyt or "Try to Remember - (John Dennis Dickey)" on the Search Bar)". Have you heard their rendition of "The Honeywind Blows"? Uniquely beautiful, also.
J'ai dû camouffler un marquage numérique comme je l'ai fait avec un logiciel en essaie. J'aimerais convertir des ppt en vidéos allégés avec musique. Comme tu semble être un pro, toute suggestion serait la bienvenue!

Try Netflix or eBay,
it's worth it. Peace...

God Bless.

loreleiwagner did not say that she(he?) thought those older days were perfect. The 60s was a period with student riots and changes. it was also a time of creativity and change. It was those young men and women that asked for change. Today our young people care only about getting a good pay. There is no soul.
hkjazz1 2 years ago
loreleiwagner, the 60s weren't all June Cleaver and Ward!

@loreleiwagner Obama's to blame for the state of things in America today.
iw32 1 year ago
@iw32 I am not a obama supporter but if I have to blame someone, it had to be american people themselves who embraced far left liberalism. I feel this country has been changing for worse in every aspect for last three decades. Isn't it ironic that we are moving towards socialism while china is moving towards capitalism?
dukjinhwang 1 year ago
@loreleiwagner I completely agree with you! They don't want kids to have critical thinking, banning books like "The Grapes of Wrath" and "1984". We are on a roller coaster heading downhill very fast! Who knew that when looking back at the sixties we would call those "the good old days"!!!!

I wish I could find the best version of this - Glenn Yarbrough's.
The New World Trio had a big hit with their version (in the UK & Australia) back in the 1970s
