  • I think that is for photo ops to be honest...

  • I know this is old news, but why would you open your cylinder cocks? You need all the power you can get, and they are certainly up to temperature by now. Sounds good though!

  • OK, the answer is a "Rudyism". Rudy claimed that in situation where you are having to make maximum traction that you should open the cylinder cocks just slightly to even out the power strokes that will help eliminate slipping casuse by the heavy power strokes. I got that answer from Kim, he was eunning the engine, Brian

  • Hmmm interesting thought, but I don't ever recall seeing the prototypes doing it. Shays Heislers climax what have you. If you're timing is on you should be pretty well balanced. I know ours with hackworth gear is a little temperamental depending on direction. It's optimized for forward running, backing up it's not quite as powerful. I'll try it next time and see.

  • i beg to diper. ive actually seen a couple vids of locos on the D&RGW with the cocks (drains) open with long trains headin up grade. I do agree wit hwat you said though i actually think about this alot when running. I guess it wouldnt make much of a difference though as not THAT much steam is getting out

  • @CGiordano464 yes but with the cyl cocks open there is also less draught, so even though there may be little loss of cyl HP, the overall steam production rate will be slowed down and that can result in stalling

  • @chappybolo its all about sand :)

  • @allylovebieber6 is this charlie?

  • @chappybolo Nope it's not Charlie. How about Brian
