  • Doug, congratulations from a Devildog and shagging buddy in Greenville.

  • An accomplishment few can ever attain even if they dedicate their whole lives to the art. Fellow martial artists watching this video should think back to the years of training and running a dojo that go into attaining such a rank. Hanshi Perry has helped pave the way for future US shorin- ryu shorinkan practicioners and deserves the up most repect for this mind-blowing accomplishment! Congratulations!

  • I had the honor and privilege of knowing and studying under Hanshi Perry back when he will still "Sensei Perry". He was my Sensei at that time and for about 5 years. I was one of his original students at the Shorin-ryu Karate Academy there in Hendersonville, NC. I learned more from Hanshi Perry about LIFE and Character than I ever learned about Karate Do.

I would love to reestablish some contact with him but.....like a Ninja.....he's impossible to either track or trace. -Rick Redmond

  • @peachfoot hey rick im a current practitioner of shorin ryu shorinkan under richard poage sensei. every year Hanshi perry has a karate camp you should look it up and perhaps visit it and see him.

  • irecordtomuch

Man, you have no idea how much I'd love to do that but I am SO unbelievably out of shape and out of practice at this point. I would embarrass myself in front of Hanshi Perry...it's been YEARS...LOL I'm better off (safer)visiting him at his DoJo there in my hometown when I go home for the Holidays.

  • @irecordtomuch I am one of Sensei Poage's students as well--the tall brown belt from Shuri-Ryu :P

  • @NeverAReflection

yes you are!!!! hahaha the one who is my grappling rival!

  • @irecordtomuch Lol, only when you don't "lay and pray" on me--I can't move you when you do that :P

  • Happened upon the site, most interesting, and just had to offer my congratulations!

  • Perry Sensei,

I just heard the good news yesterday and found the youtube video. My most sincere congratulations on a well-deserved accomplishment!! All the best to you and yours.

  • Omedete Gozaimasu Hanshi Perry!!!!

  • Congradulations on becoming the first non-okinawan to receive the rank of Hanshi. Hanshi Doug Perry, boy that sounds awesome. Looking forward to seeing you in Chico,California again.

    Scott White

  • Perry Sensei, congratulations for being the first non-Okinawan in Nakazato Sensei's organization to be promoted to Hanshi. We would not want to dismiss the accomplishments of Mirakian Sensei, Merriman Sensei of Goju and Mattson Sensei of Uechi Ryu who have long been promoted to Hanshi ranks.

  • NewEnglandbob

Thank you for correcting my sons commits on Hanshi Perry. Scott was talking about within Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan

There are other Okinawa Hanshi's and as you know some that claim to be even Grand Master. We know several people in the Uechi-Ryu. We have a great respect for Uerhi-Ryu an all Okinawain Karate-do.

Scott did not mean any disrespect and we are sorry if we offended you or anyone.

    Thank You, Gordon White

  • I did not mean to take away from Perry Sensei's great accomplishments or the great things that he has done in his martial arts career! But there are some legitimate non-Okinawan kudan.

  • Congratulations Hanshi Perry from the Cates family. Of which we feel you are a member. M. Cates

  • Omedetto-Gozaimasu Hanshi Perry! I have always been proud to be one of your students here in Hendersonville - and also always in awe of the way people would come from all over the country just for three days to train in your presence. I did not understand as much as a child, but somewhere in 15 years, I finally know why. I am honored to be in your dojo and my admiration grows more everyday. I am honored to have and to be a "rat". No one deserved this more than you Hanshi Perry!

  • Outstanding & Well deserved!

  • Their was not a more deserving man in the U.S.

    Congratulations Hanshi!

  • Absolutely deserves this. Makes me proud to be Shorinkan.

  • Congratulations sensei Perry. You deserve this recongiton not only as a great karate man, but as a great American who has served your country and fellow man with dignity and respect. You are the leader of Shorin Ryu in America regardless of Ryu Ha.

  • Sensei Perry is well deserving of this promotion. He is not only a great Okinawa karate man but a great American. I feel honored that sensei Perry is our friend and leader of Shorin Ryu in the USA regardless of ryu ha.
