  • MY MOTHER AND MY SISTER, MY KID GAL, AND MY WIFE

  • I can't figure out how he's making those sounds with that guitar.

  • @Gepetto48 The civil rights movement only ended because most of the great black leaders of the time were killed. A community with out any proper leadership is bound to have major problems especially if their own government is trying so hard to keep them down

  • My my, what a bunch of race-baiting whiners on this thread! What's the matter? Do you need someone else to blame for your inconsequential little existence? I could have sworn it was just a video of a man playing a song. Or do you even recall why you clicked on it in the first place?

  • @diggyu You sir, seem to be a very grumpy, opinionated racist. Before you go pointing fingers at an ENTIRE race for allegedly "stealing" music that originated with black people, know that we are all allowed to enjoy the music we choose. Music can't be divided like race was, otherwise white people would be stuck with cheesy 90's synth pop like depeche mode (no offense depeche mode)

  • love this song

  • !!!

  • best ever and ever and ever

  • He puts so much more feeling into this version than what his known albums play. I think this version is better (At least i don't think any albums have it...).

  • A metric ton of thanx a respect to the person who posted this video. Son House had a gift in creating this beautiful expression of emotion. You would be hard put to find that in today's music.

  • check out my channel if you like delta blues

  • This man is from my hometown of Rochester, NY. Lived just across the river. And he tutored John Mooney, another local boy who made good in blues music.

  • Awesome!

  • The Blues.

  • Who are the women he says he loves after his mother and his sister?

  • @32646286 One of them is definitely "my wife." The other line has been the subject of much discussion in these comments. Leading theories are "kin gal," "kid gal" and "dead gal." Check out the comments from about a year ago for detailed discussion of this.

  • @scmm42

    He sings "my good gal"

I haven't read the discussion below but it's not uncommon reference to 'a lady on the side' in the blues...

  • @edw39I

    Lol...no it's not

My mother, my sister, my tin can, and my wife, everyone knows that

  • @scmm42 I hear "my mother, my sister, my kitty cat and my wife"...

  • @scmm42 I thought it was 'My tin can' referring to his guitar.

  • @WdUoGyGlLeErS

    It is

  • @scmm42

It's Tin Can...as in his resonator guitar

My Mother, My Sister, My Tin Can, and My Wife

  • @scmm42

Kin gal, I've never heard anyone say that.....I guess if you don't play the guitar you would get the Tin Can, but it's widely known

  • @scmm42 kitty cat

  • @lostthebattle Thank you! It's kind of a relief that it's not just me hearin "kitty cat".

  • @scmm42 "kid girl" would make sense in a way that he means "his" daughter (?). I mean three of the four women "he" lists are part of "his" family.

  • @scmm42 I think he's saying tin can, as in his guitar. or hes just saying guitar

  • @32646286: It seems to be: my mother, my sister, kid girl, and my wife.

  • @32646286 - "my good gal"

  • @32646286 tin can

  • @32646286 his mother, his sister and wife for sure. I think hes saying "kid gal", im pretty sure. But "kin gal" is possible. I dont hear "dead" at all

  • @ryanhashton it is kid gal, that's an old southern saying for daughter

  • 1:21 instant shivers. Real blues.

  • You can feel the pain in every strum of the guitar and note of his singing. This is a perfect song and know it will live forever. Show this song to everybody you know, this is a song everybody should hear once in their life.

  • arguing on the internet it like the special olympics; no matter who wins, your still retarted, but especially @diggyu. put that in your juice box and SUCK IT!!!!

  • @GamesFrontiers Every other middle aged white guy is a blues guitar player. Not one of them can do this.

  • @GamesFrontiers: However, Peter Green said that white musicians only interpreted the blues; they never really played/sung blues.

  • I've got da blues.

  • Greatest song ever written... so sad...

  • i love me sum son tho.....

  • @towcar68 actually if you bothered to look into it a bit more you can see that Alex Gram Bell wrote several letters thanking an african Canadian man for coming up with the original idea, there is also a similar story with the lightbulb

  • @Nick4563880 Yeah I heard an Canadian man helped with the idea, I didn't know he was african too. haha btw I just wanted to mess with diggyu, he's annoying and pushing his buttons makes me feel better inside :)

  • @diggyu what the fuck is wrong with you? White people didn't "steal" anyones music, music is for anyone who enjoys it. White people wanted to ba a part of "your" music not steal it. Copying is the ultimate form of flattery.

  • @THEhooligan6911 Go copy a IPHONE and see if Apple is flattered.

  • @THEhooligan6911 You are a bellend

  • The comments on this are ridiculous.White people didn't "steal" blues. If your gonna be so pissed and racist, play some blues yourself take it back from the evil, devil worshiping, white men!

  • @Simonkingston182 IF I WANT TO BE PISSED ABOUT THE SHIT THATS MY CHOICE I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR OPINION WHITE BOY.

  • @diggyu Just to add in my two sense, you degrade society. Lets hope your influence is limited. And if you TRULY feel "white people" should give back the blues, then I wish you give back all the things you "stole" from the us. Such as the vehicles, we invented those, the telephone too, the lightbulb, computers, hell the list goes on. These things are apart of our heritage, and if you wish for the blues to be "returned", rid yourself of our stuff. Thank you

  • @towcar68 here are some thing you forgot white people invented the atom bomb , the hydrogen bomb, the machine gun, ICBM, the tank, poison gas, repeating rifle, the taser gun, surveillance cameras and satellites, the phone tap, global warming, over fishing, nuclear waste, strip mining, capitalism, the gas chamber , the electric chair, lethal injection, cluster bombs, JDAMS, Tomahawk missiles, the world would like to rid itself of this crap white people invented thank you bitch.

  • @diggyu would have been you eventually just the same.

  • @towcar68 Go F@#k Yourself white boy.

  • @diggyu i cant believe you are spitting this bullshit fucking hate speech on a video like this, son house surely wouldnt approve, you should probably shut the fuck up with your ignorance, black white asian, who the fuck cares, i swear this would be a better world if everyone was colorblind

  • i give the white stripes props for doing a son house song you dont see metallica or avenged sevenfold doing one of theese covers.

  • My point was for everyone who thinks these blues guys from back in the day when racism was the rule in the USA not the exception would be sitting next to punk ass jack white on the same stage smiling is complete bullshit now if it was a young Keb Mo yeah, you act like we are just so cool with giving our heritage away to the next white guy that shows up as if it just gives our hearts joy to get ripped by white people, we cant even have our own damn music without the white man stealing that.

  • @diggyu hey man I can appreciate that you and others want certain things of african amercan culture to remain unique and to only be represented by those of african american deccent but I would like to point out that you're been completly racist. You have your reasons and that I can appreciate, I say appreciate because I can not understand what is like for african americans as I am not american. I am Australian and our identity is one of our most sensitve topics also

  • I really pity my generation who turned their backs on good music, because this is honestly 100 times better than the music that is "main stream" today

  • I went from Manowar to this shit???? This is sweet

  • powerful stuff

  • Great stuff!! Enjoyed that!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • what tuning is that? im a noob to slide haha

  • @secretagentYTer

    Most likely Open G

  • @BrutalizeURf4ce

    I thought it was open D. O__o

  • @CarlSagan0101

All I know is Open G is very popular with these old blues guys, and he is using a lot of fingerings I commonly do, and I play in open G mostly.

  • Damn... what a song!

  • Comment removed

  • to me blues is like beethoven. it is exactly the same! i so much can feel that! the mood is different....but you can feel both shit sooo strong!!! ya know wad i meen?

  • "The Blues is easy to play ,but it's hard to feel" Jimi Hendrix.

  • @jacksondemarre no, blues are easy to learn but take a life time to master

  • I've done a remix of 'Jinx Blues' if anyone's interested. The only video on my channel. Cheers.

  • Back when black people still played instruments... damn do I miss those days..

  • @SethRasporich agreed the digital and sampling took over young brothers minds to the point that is all they wanted to use i call it taking the easy way out.

  • yep. that's it. he felt it. truely felt it. god bless.

  • I love this. Music from the bottom up. The true sound of Democracy !

  • First time I heard a performance by Son House, was on the movie "Desperate Man Blues". Great performance. I wish I could find a copy of him on 78.

  • I could listen to this song over and over and over

  • does anybody know the tuning to this ???

  • @jasonu95 It's open D tuning. Get ready to rape your fingers

  • Hey, can someone put up a tab for the main riff, I can't figure it out. I got one similar in standard tuning, but in open g I'm lost, and naturally the slide sounds horrible in standard

  • I was born in 1989. The more I listen to this song the more I feel like this style of guitar was the greatest application of the guitar. I've been religiously trying to learn delta blues style guitar so if anyone knows any good youtube videos to learn how to play this type of music please let me know.

    Thanks in advance

  • @JBTFan124 Haha, me too! Deltabluestips is good, daddystovepipe and Jim Bruce are all pretty good, but maybe you already know them.

  • @peternaur hey thanks alot man I'll check them out

  • Anyone know what tuning?

  • @theuspatriot3000 Jack W plays it in open G [D G D G B D]. I don't know what this one is

  • @RedJimmy3 Yes, that is Son House's signature tuning thanks! I think the video is out a little.

  • i have to agree...this man started it all. A genre was born...later on, it gave birth to the Stones, all that shit man...long live the blues

  • We watched him in my popular culture history class, one of the most moving song I've heard.

  • This song stirs your emotions....ts the vocals....he sings this soo well...

  • This dick is ripping off the White Stripes!

  • @FatBlackFrancis you're joking right?! Lol, yeh you're joking arent you. Lol, This comment made me laugh, I can see your sarcasm.

  • nicht für Geld,nicht für Ruhm ...

    einfach weil es raus muß

  • Gotta love the blues.

  • @veeseee128 No cuz then he would have to be kissing you.

  • @fizXwolf yo mama.

  • The whole thing is great, but the vocal at 1:21 gave me the chills.

Fans of raw slide guitar blues might like "Rosetta West - Underground" or "Rosetta West - Susanna Jones."

  • jack white's remake is awesome

  • This guy is badass....

  • gotta appreciate the basis of music

  • Very old classic blues, also Jack White's favorite song that got him started on his career. I love White's stuff because he did study with the masters of blues & guitar, always humble & willing to learn something new, he's an amazing artist & one of the reasons is these influences such as this blues song.

  • was this in bc or ad?

  • @dangerkadung hahahahaha.....*catches breathe...reads comment again* HAHAHAHAHA.

    Are you serious or trolling?

  • ooooo great

  • brilliant

  • EVER HEAR THAT CHURCH BELL TOLL.

EVER HEAR PERFECTION IN YOUR HEARING.

    EVER HEAR SON HOUSE.

PERFECTION. ALL 3:13 MINUTES OF PERFECT TIMING. MOANING. TWISTING EMOTIONS ALL OVER DE PLACE. HAUNTING, UNDUPLICATING.

CONJURING UP AND INVOCKING SUCH FULL POWER AND GLORY.

OH SON HOUSE. OUR SON HOUSE.

  • *don't get to often anymore

  • There is just so much raw truth to what he said it's something you Dom

  • @Nayelle1290 Couldn't have said it better myself..

  • you know what makes blues so amazing? the pure soul that every great blues artist has, i mean when they sing you hear the pain but you also hear that sense of hope

  • Doubt he needed that slide, he might as well have disfigured his left hand to go with his right

  • This song actually looks like its hurting him..

  • pure soul

  • where can i get a mp3 of this verson?

  • this is a classic!

  • Attention ! he's not using a pick. that must be painful

  • @kirkhammett110919901 I tried this stuff without a pic. It hurts like all sin (and I bled a little, don't have resonator strings), but when you get callouses it's fine.

  • Jack White plays a ridiculously intriguing version of this at blackpool

  • @clanis90 He goes crazy on this song at Blackpool, thats how I found Son's version.

  • @Nayelle1290 Right on

  • Funny how forums turn into vitriol and obscenity behind just watching a master that can reach from the grave and set us straight..

Listen to Sun House and you are channeling the guy that gave us Robert Johnson and all the greats like Muddy Waters that got 5 watt fender amps. No one pretends to scare you like only Sun House can..

  • Honestly, they can't sing the blues like that anymore nowadays. That man is the blues.

  • starkly beautiful and authentic

  • Wow! It would be something to be able to play a fraction as well as this man does.

  • This is good, if you like hip hop the funkoars sampled this song in their song called D Letter its really good

  • I found out about Son House from reading the liner notes of a Muddy Waters cd. And unlike a lot of folks I found out about the White Stripes from searching for info on Death Letter from Altavista(shows how long ago that was) and I kept seeing White Stipes pop up on the screen. Annoyed I finally clicked and thank God. I heard Jack's version of Death Letter and ended up buying the entire album the next day. I don't know what the argument is. This is a large part of Jack White's musical foundation

  • Man, whats up with the comparisons, can't we just listen to our music and let others enjoy theirs XD

  • LiL Wayn,Paris Hilton,Jearsey Shore,Black eyed peas...all that shit...GO FUCK YOURSELFS!!!!!

  • @MrBRUCELEE98 Well Put!!! All these celebrities with record deals who sound like shit are rich as hell. They need to put that shit in the economy so the poor get some fair treatment for once. Real music doesn't equal money or weeks on a chart. Music equals what comes from the heart.

  • @MrBRUCELEE98 shouldn't disrespect music you don't like. even if it's not music to you.

  • @ZeppelinFloydRoses If you concider any of that music...then you dont know what real music is but I see your point.

  • @MrBRUCELEE98 i don't like it. i listen to them, see what they're like and i don't like them. i actually hate them. but i don't go out of my way to disrespect them because i don't like them...

  • @ZeppelinFloydRoses Dude...whatever...I dont want to go back and forth with somebody I dont know...Agree to disagree?

  • @MrBRUCELEE98 yes sir

  • @ZeppelinFloydRoses Classy.

  • @MrBRUCELEE98 haha dat comment made my ngth, simple yet tru

  • I wish I was that barrel next to him...SO bad.

  • @Nayelle1290 They were awesome indeed. In my opinion African Americans have the richest culture and funnest worth looking into. When i moved from Brazil here i found other cultures to be copies or stale. But this is so full of flavor and "soul" :).

  • @Nayelle1290 yeah its african american, and its gold... cant believe how your people still get lynched, not in a direct way but in a indirect way... like georgia, but still america has major problems to take action against.. not just the racism but the war crimes you conduct in iraq, afghanistan and all of middle america from 1900 to this date

  • @Nayelle1290 im not saying it isnt african , im just saying it wasnt just them ok

  • @Nayelle1290 im not saying it isnt african , im just saying it wasnt just them ok

  • @Nayelle1290 not trying to undermine your comment but blues isnt just african american , it started as a mix between african and anglo-celtic folk music

  • @lgmk55 Untrue. Blues Started as Black slavery songs.. Negro Spirituals....? Ever here of them? The slurring sound of original Blues is due to the Same sounds in African ritual music.

We were beaten if we’d say the language or Words But we could STILL move the riffs. :) I Love Black people.

BTW, African Americans are the Africans who JUST arrived her, NOT The Black people who helped…, MADE, America what it is today.

    G

  • @GWoification are you retarded , did i just state that any of what you said is wrong , i just said i think people should know that blues and jazz and other genres were formed because of the amount of mixing cultures in america and while african music was probably the major factor in this , other cultures music were mixed in too , boy

  • @lgmk55 Nope I am not , however, I am beginning to realize that I May be speaking to one who Is. ;] Your statement, is clearly posted, :

"@Nayelle1290 not trying to undermine your comment but blues isnt just african american , it started as a mix between african and anglo-celtic folk music"

{Note YOU Used the word, ”STARTED”, this Is the operative word}, as a mix..yadda~~"

  • @lgmk55 ....so...? yeah...? READ! I Taught you Where it Started, as an ALL "Black thing" Your submission is explaining the reverse. ...That’s Why it is Not a true statement.

If you wrote some other statemen previously, well I wasn’t interested enough to check for other comments.. *smh* …moot point, at any rate because these words recant any other statement of the opposite nature.....

  • ...Again, Blues inception was Slaves lamented songs, sang in the same ingrained "accents", if you will, of their African backgrounds And their Forced ignorance.

That's the “cool”, “new” sound others could hear.

Btw, I'd refrain from attempting to insult one, such as myself, :) Sweetly stating your position is Always the best bet.

    G

  • @lgmk55 Thank you for the reply. :)

    G

  • @GWoification im not really bothered reading your 6 comments , and im bored of this argument so ill just leave you have your opinion

  • Pioneers,Son House

  • Relax people

  • Wow, my ignorance shocks me. Until now I didn't know Death Letter by The White Stripes was a cover..

  • i love the way he plays its amazing

  • GREAT song, really amazing!

check out my version of this song ;)

  • Best Song.. EVER

  • ...and the winner for most soulful song ever is...Son House's Death Letter Blues.

  • IF ITS THE DEVILS MUSIC, SATAN MUST BE AWEFULLY PROUD!!!

  • Son House, best 3 minutes ive ever spent on Youtube. This is a song that will stick with me 'til i die.

  • this is one type of music that true touches all type if not for the blues there would only be half the music we have now ......true legends

  • Amazing :)

  • This is brilliant

  • Doesn't matter how old you are, but you can still be immature and spout your age like it matters.

  • Comment removed

  • that is the greatest live blues performance i ever saw....

  • What's wrong with society today, listening to autotuned voices, played on computer generated beats. Whatever happened to real music? Like this, I'm only 13 and this is the music I listen to, not Justin Bieber, or any hip-hop shit like that. And i know girls ho listen to this too at my age. Sadly nough, no one does know what music is anymore.

  • @DJDFTDAV I'm in the same boat here man i'm 14 and not many people my age have got any idea what real music is. This is it.

  • @jimmypageIV Good to see young people coming around to appreciating the Blues

  • @rmurbach1961 He's a Led Zeppelin fan.

    Zeppelin fans love the blues

  • @DJDFTDAV Nobody cares how old you are. Like it's so spectacular that you're 13 and you're watching this. Good music is good music, people of all ages should listen to it. Throwing your age out there like somebody's supposed to be impressed it pretty immature. It doesn't matter how old you are.

  • Not everyone is ready to hear Son House. They gotta start with something lighter. If Jack White respectfully points some listeners in the direction of Son House with his music it's alright with me.

  • I don't think you need to look down your nose at Jack White in order to love this music. It was a different age, and Son House is far too good to need the snobbery.

  • @gongusan

Blah blah blah, you just keep buying those boring Jack White cd's..(Please don't reply).
