Many of us are working ourselves to death trying to survive in the current reality, and have no energy or time left to go out and make a difference. I agree that our priorities are all out of wack, but you can't criticize people who are just trying to survive in spite of their lack of understanding. That said, there is ALOT of apathy and worse, disbelief. Where we screwed up in the US was when GM and oil companies bullied us to believe that consuming stuff was the way to happiness.
Yes I agree that people are too busy to give a shit. We are busy all day doing nothing working the whole day through, trying so hard to find lots of things not to do...
In the meat section of my supermarket I regularly see organic beef from Uruguay. Here's the irony. We have several organic, grass fed cattle ranches less than 25 miles away, and one of the biggest cattle ranches in the western United States is less than 200 miles away. But they are flying "organic grass fed beef" from thousands of miles away in Uruguay. Tell me that is not peak oil insanity! And it doesn't dtop there...Tilapia from Vietnam, Sea Bass from Chile, etc.
Having just got back from Europe I'm not surprised at anything. There are more trucks on the road than ever. The four big members of the EU show no understanding of peak anything- same as it always was.....
No, we can't save mankind even if we try to. We have to accept that not only individuals but our whole species is only a temporary biological phenomenon.
You analyzed and summarized the topic perfectly. Thank you. I would just like to add something that James Howard Kunstler has stated numerous times and that is that the creation of the suburban life style in the US was the greatest mis-allocation of resources in the history of Mankind (and we had ample warning in the 70's at the time US production peaked).
completely self-contained houses. from sewage system to generating their own energy, water, and food. usually built out of recycled or discarded materials. michael reynolds is the main guy behind it.
that one woman wanted positivity. the only thing i can think of thats positive is that people will be forced out of their complacency and comfort, and towards using their brains once again. with enough people using their brains maybe we figure a way out of this.
